I bought a sub from a fellow forum member and now i need an amp to accompany the sub. The sub's output is 1200W so what do i kinda amp do i need?
Ta.

an 800w to a 1000w amp would do the job, im runnin 2 12" subs which are 800 w each and they sound fantastic. i got a sony explode 1000w amp for around £200. get a good wiring kit, spend about 30 to 50 quid on them cause they make all the difference and run your power cable down one side of the car and the resr down the other to avoid distortion. hope this helps.
-
Better off telling us what make/model the sub is really - those power figures don't mean a great deal in reality.
Also depends upon how you'll be running the sub - sealed subs can take a fair whack more power to get them going. I've had my "1000w" GT4 (ported) singing well from a genuine 140w RMS.

I dont know much about car audio, all i know its a 12" Sony Xplod sub in a wooden box, it says 1200W max output on the speaker. Any ideas?

ah, old school jensen amps, lovely!
I suspect the sub to be about 350-400wrms.
so any amp about that value should be good for it. JBL are always a safe bet, or fusion.
-
I'll get the speaker out of the enclosure and have a look at the back so i can get a some more info hopefully.
-
I looked at the back of the sub and it says:
Frequncy response: 18Hz - 2000Hz
Rated power: 350W
Impedance: 4 Ohms
Peak Power: 1200W
Here's more info after a web search:

So should i be looking for an amp thats rated 350W? What else should i want from the amp?

Why not just try the Jensen with 2 channels bridged? You've got nothing to lose - might be 200w RMS if you're lucky, and should get the old X-plop moving.
-
something like this would be well suited.

The jensen amp was sold seperately.

That JBL would be a pretty good match I should think - a lot of (genuine) watts for not a lot of cash. You could probably get away with a 75.2 bridged to give about 280w RMS IIRC, if you wanted to save a little.
-
I'm sure if you bridged one of these it'd be pretty loud: http://cgi.ebay.ie/JBL-GTO-4000-4-channel-car-amp-Retail-Price-149-99_W0QQitemZ330158521909QQihZ014QQcategoryZ4950QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem (http://cgi.ebay.ie/JBL-GTO-4000-4-channel-car-amp-Retail-Price-149-99_W0QQitemZ330158521909QQihZ014QQcategoryZ4950QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem) got one not too long ago and happy with it.
EDIT: just had a look and there's more powerful ones there too.

The JBL above is 4 channel, and only bridges to 150w, but would still be OK if you wanted the other 2 channels for the front.
This would be ideal:

But don't forget, you'll need a wiring kit as well.
