Title: What have I donr wrong?
Post by: Philpy on 25 August 2007, 15:37
I have recently changed the engine in my 16v. The new engine would turn over when I got it by hand (Wrench on crank pulley) I then proceeded to fit a new clutch and fit the gearbox etc. I have fitted the engine and wired back in etc. Before I try and start it I thought I would just turn it over by hand again. But Its jammed solid wont move either way at all.  I dont want to try and start it incase I mess anything else up!
Thinking back the I didnt have to lock the pressure plate or fylwheel when I did the bolts up to the correct torque setting. What could be jamming it solid?

could be any number of things dude, is it in gear that may lock her up if the wheels are on the deck and the handbreaks on you wont move it, check the gear selector housings on right you may think its not in gear but it might be, that or your timeing has slipped and your pistons restin on a valve Doh!! rattle the covers off and check the marks, good call not trying to start her, im betting its in gear tho, good luck let me know??

Is the starter motor the correct one? If the teeth spacing are different, then they will not mate to the flywheel, thus will jam everything.

I thought about the starter but surely the it wont matter as the starer doesnt touch the flywheel until you turn the key?

It depends on which starter is used. I think these are constantly engaged, ie, non throw out ones, on a clutch. I would have thought they would be the same, but not sure if there are differences between 8v and 16v and G60 etc. Rubjonny would know. Are you out there...........?

In the end I took it all to bits again, and took the engine out again.... Turns out when my mechanic friend who changed the cambelt (Only thing I havent done myself) he fitted new bolts in the bottom pulley as mine were rounded off. Anyway seems there are about 2mm to long so locked the bottom pulley solid! Coulda done that without stripping everything out again!
