Title: Gutted!!!!!
Post by: takethefifth on 25 August 2007, 11:33
Well balls i've knacked my car!!

Before:

After:

Was just coming back from a camping holiday in the lakes and going over the buttertubs near to my house, sharp bend, 100ft drop and my wheel falls off!!! Feel the crunch of the brake disc biting the tarmac and see my wheel rolling past me in a comedy manner before hurling itself off the side! Frickin' lucky was my first thought!

I'm putting it down to the ebay purchased wheel bolts i used to put these wheels on a few months ago. Couldn't find any to check though! I think i might have weakened them or something when i went over Hardknott pass the day before. (Does anyone know Hardknott? That is one SERIOUS road!)

Just about to pop it on axle stands and have a look at the damage.

If anyone has a Silver wing and/or door they would like to sell me that would be spot on! I have my old wheels and bolts to go on till i find the missing wheel

Going to check the brake disc but other than that there doesn't seem to be anything mechanically thats obviously damaged.

So yes if anyone has an ideas of things i should be checking, has a spare wing or door to sell me or just wants to offer condolences please reply!

That is nasty!

Is the hub alright? Could the bolts not have stripped the thread on the way out?

Cheers for the kind words!

Hunting down a wing and door today, anyone know any good breakers btw?

Going to replace the hub as well as i am worried about the threads but everything else seems ok.

I am putting it down to using too short wheel bolts which then allowed it to strip the thread out of the hub  :embarassed: That was a fairly foolish mistake. :embarassed:

Gutted for you  mate, hope you manage to get it sorted.
I love the buttertubs, visited them last month for the first time in years.
Oh and the Hardknott!!! Quality driving, managed it in both directions last month in my campervan, very scary!!! Managed the approach from the west side in heavy rain with the back wheels spinning all the way. There was no way I was attempting the eastern approach in the wet so I did that a few days later in the dry (back wheels were still struggling for grip though).

Cheers Organisys i did try them Stevens people and they were the best out of the ones i rang.  In the end i got a door locally for £30 and a wing from a friend of a friend. So cheap fix so far.  Should be nice with a black door and a green wing!

The buttertubs are in North Yorkshire near a village called Muker. To give you an idea here is a video i found of some other guy driving over it, 3 mins 50 seconds is where the wheel came off!!

Porka sounds sweet!  And didn't go over the side as my brake disc did a damn good job of digging in and stopping me! Even managed to use the momentum to park it almost neatly in the layby on the left!

fyi for future reference, BMW wheel bolts are the correct thread and are slightly longer than oem bolts.  Plus they have a tapered seat so are perfect for fitting aftermerket alloys!  Oh and make sure you get 4 complete finger turns on the wheel bolts, any less is not enough!

If the Bore of the wheel is not the same size as the Hub on the car you need Spigot Rings to reduce the diameter.  This is because if the Bore is Bigger and you have no Spigot Rings the Studs will be taking the weight of the  wheel instead of the Hub, Stud snaps and the wheel can come off.

The Studs are only supposed to keep the wheel on, not take the weight.

Glad you ok, watched the video, that was some corner and drop to have your wheel fall off, hope no one in car made it worse for you, nice road though, may have to check that out next spring!
Watch with the paint when when you get repair sprayed, took my paint code to a paint shop and got the right paint, when I sprayed it, its alot darker, got the same as you I think L97A paint code, maybe it was spray job, but it doesn't look too good, one day when the funds are there!!!

Not quite right, the hub or studs only centre the wheel, once the bolts/nuts are done up theres no shear force on them, this is overcome by the friction between the wheel & hub face.  The reason the bolts/studs may snap is due to the vibration caused by an off-centre wheel :)

Of course the vibration could lead to the bolts/studs all working loose, then shear forces will come into play :)

Scary stuff indeed.....

Cheers again!  Hardknott in a camper?  Rather you than me my friend!

All sorted now, got my old wheels back on, hub replaced, wing and door replaced. Needs some paint but i can survive for now.

Even found the missing wheel from the bottom of the valley! (just need some decent wheel bolts now!)
