Ive got a mk2 16v golf 175k on the clock. I decided to change the cambelt, alternator belt and the waterpump. I also flushed the rad. Since putting it back together its making a whinning noise from the alternater, water pump, power steering area. I got the water pump from gscp's. The belts seem to be tight enough and are not rubbing on the covers. Has anyone got any ideas what would be causing the noise as its rather anoying. i gets louder as you rev the engine. any help greatly appreciated

The whining noise could be a belt tensioned too tightly, or, if tensioned correctly, you have found a pulley bearing that is worn that you did not know about before. If it was the water pump bearing gone, then it is likely that the pump would leak water.
Re-check your tensions first. The cam belt tension should be so that you can twist the belt through 90 degrees with moderate force with your finger and thumb, in the middle of the pullies that are furthest apart from each other.

Sounds like a belt is too tight. Sometimes you can notice by the engine running a little bit funny (poor performance) if is the timing belt. If its a purring whine - then its overtensioned belt, if its a sqeakey whine then I would guess a pulley has been incorrectly fitted - you've not put the tensioner on backwards have you?

tensioner is definatly the right way round, ill recheck the powersteering and alternator belts, I may have over done them a bit. How tight should they be?.

Difficult to answer. Make them so that you get about 5-10mm deflection when firmly moved with finger and thumb.

whining noise is usualy narrowed down to girlfriend in passenger seat.

My money is on the water pump bearing.

If it's a new pump it rules that out. Might be alternator or power steering pump ??

just seems strange the noise has started since renewing the belts. perhaps its rubbing on the covers??. ill have to investigate further

My GSF water pump lasted about 5k miles!
Rubbish !

Penny drops. Check which way you tensioned the cam belt. If it is tensioned the wrong way, it rubs against the cover. You can either take a chunk out of the cover if you don't want to disturb said belt, or do it properly and re-adjust tensioner, but the other way.

I suggest removing her from the boot
Anyway, i had that sound when i bought my GTi it sounded like it was supercharged? Whinig that got higher in pitch as the revs went upp. I foud that the cam bet tensioner was to otight. So i just untightened it a bit and the noise disapeared. I didnt otice any difference in performance when it was/wasn't whining.
