Title: Simple question, I know...
Post by: Golfer on 24 February 2004, 09:16
Guys

Not really into the modding thing, and I ain't got a clue about most of it.  ??? I have a stock 2.0 8v Mk3 - obviously it could do with a bit more oomph.   :D What could I do that won't cost the earth - I'm not interested in adding 10bhp, here or there - I'd like get it up to at least 150bhp, preferably more.

Could I get it chipped?   What does this involve?   How much?   What about insurance - I have to tell 'em don't I?

Sorry for all the q's, but I ain't got a clue really!

Sometimes I wish I'd bought a 16v!

Cheers in advance,

Ed

You could get up to that spec but will probably cost you a grand or more, if you could do it yourself then would be cheaper.
Filter, exhaust, cam, ported head, chip etc..

Just get a 16v instead, with all them mods you would probably spend the difference in price anyway, plus u could then make the 16v faster  ;D

Yeah for the price of a 1998 8v if its in as good condition as it should be you could get a good 95/96 16v,  pay a bit more insurance instead of the price of mods and there you go 150 bhp, easy!   16v's can apparently be chipped to 170bhp with little fuss for less than ?300.  Don't know if this is totally true but i'm sure someone will soon let you know!

Cheers guys - might consider selling it and buying a 16v....or may be a VR6???! ;D

I think I'd get about ?4k for it - it's done 65k, full VW history, everything works.  Overall condition is very good - looks very smart inside and out.

Not sure if the colour is a minus point though - bordering on purple - the infamous 'mystic blue'.... :-\

Might give it a go - need to look at me bank balance!

Mystic blue is a bit of a love it or hate it colour so half the people looking for a golf will love it!  The colour won't affect the price too much.

If you decide to sell it i'd try it at ?4,500 to start with, for a '98 with average miles in good condition and fVWsh, fair chance of getting over ?4k i reckon.

With that money you should be able to find a mint 16v or a decent vr6.

A chip can get 170bhp easily.  The 16V engine was 'detuned' so it would not rival the flagship VR6.  ;D

detuned eh? so you could chip one to 170bhp without causing any stress to the enginey bits?

Has anyone had this done?  What are the results?  How much?  Where? etc.

16v will easily run at 170, same way the vr6 will easily run at 190-200.
They are both detuned as cheaper to mass produce, and the cars will produce more attractive fuel consumption figures when standard.
