Recently test drove a black 05 3door GTI with DSG and 18" Monzas at a dealers. Bargain price at £14K with 42K miles. Told it had scuffed wheels and front bumper, but they'd be repaired along with anything else that needed doing. Loved the car, unsure about the gearbox as never driven one before and seemed a bit daunting on the test drive. Although I only drove it a few miles and it was silky smooth. Unfortunately, the car had a few more scuffs and scrapes than advertised, as well as worn/saggy seat bolsters and on the limit tyres. Dealer claimed the car was advertised wrongly at trade price and then refused to do any repairs. Needless to say, I walked away(rather wait a while for a decent one). Still want one though, but wondered if the DSG is worth the extra cash and rarity over the manual. Any thoughts?

Buy a DSG!
I was in the same position as you - never driven an auto and unsure about owning one. The test drive(s) can't do it justice. It could have been an expensive mistake but believe me its good, real good.
The only problem is what do you do with your left foot and arm?

Hey am gonna throw my thought in the pot here, I not got a Mk5, but I got an Alhambra with tip-tronic with a 1.8T 20 valve, it is lovely and considering Vag learnt off this box for the DSG its got to be good, very quick at pick up and step down, but I get annoyed as when your coasting at 30mph it likes to knock it down a cog, also it won't go up till the revs hit 2000, ok when your pushing it, but when you just ploding its nice to have a manual so you can change up when you want. But I love being able to do everything driving along with one hand and foot. uel consumption is higher def cause of the weight and due to the car never being in neutral unless you put it there.
Hope this helps

Found it strange to keep my left foot pinned to the floor, also kept lifting off the accelerator when changing gear!!! I'm sure I'd get use to it and it was great to keep your foot down when changing gear. Don't see many for sale with the DSG though.
-
I am planning to change my GTTDI next year to a used GTI with a DSG box - DSG all the way for me..automatic boxes never bothered me too much as my dads always had one and I regularly change between driving his car and my manual Golf!
Just as a matter of interest what was the name of the dealer who had the GTI mentioned above? was it a complete dog?

exactly the same as me.
DSG is a no brainer - you just dont realise ubtil youve had it for a week or so. Wow!
-
I haven't got a DSG, the Reasons being
1) Lazy for me, just my opinion but the only place I've liked driving an Auto is in Traffic.
2) The comments on here about Cluncking and strange noises from cold?
3) It is extra cost not sure how it will affect re-sale
4) Future Problems / Expense when NOT under warranty
Number 4 was my biggest fear, and with the people on here that have had software updates and so on to fix, I think the main concern here will be reliability.
End of the day it's up to you

Its a bit like having sex with a vibrator where the other half has all the fun and your kind of left out of it. Use the stick to shift and do it manually!
-
yeah i went for manual! i wanna feel like im driving!
-
DSG for me, lazy if you want, a fair degree of control if you choose! It is not perfect but it is on it's way
to being the best compromise for UK driving (stuck in traffic most of the time, back road blasts some of the
time). The GTI is the 2nd car I have had with it (A3 2.0 TDi before) and I am pretty convinced that it is the way forward for my needs!
-
DSG all the way. Theres the option to drive in D like a Grandad and theres the option pop it in manual and be a boy racer. Its changed my life!
-
Manual for me! Parents have a DSG Eos, very nice and smooth, but can't beat the feedback you get from a clutch and manual box IMO!
I have also read that if you have a DSG box and are planning a remap, then the torque figures have to be limited to a certain amount, not sure of the details - I'm sure I read it on here somewhere, anyone confirm or not?!
-
DSG!!
-
The biggest reason for wanting a change when I bought ED30 was that I was bored driving A3 DSG & could not wait to get back to a manual.
Have to stay it is a brilliant bit of engineering and very smooth - but at the end of the day after 2 years I was desperate to get back to a manual box and give my left arm something to do.

You may need help!!! anyone wanna help with this gents problem
:embarassed:
-
DSG!!
MANUAL
-
It amazes me that manuals still exist. I've gone from an Alfa selsepeed to a BMW auto and now I have the DSG. If I get back into a manual now it feels incredibly old fashioned and clunky  When was the last time you saw an F1 driver press a pedal and stir a lever! Manuals give you 1% extra control 0.5% of the time when you have an open road
The DSG box is the best auto I've used by a long way, double clutches are the future!!
-
you cant beat that sound the exaust makes along with the turbo whistling with dsg!, brings a smile to my face everytime, its a no brainer, reliable, good fun, and can be used with a stick if u wanna feel like a manual. I would find it hard going back to any manual after having DSG.
-
Sorry, but MANUAL all the way, unless you are a southern softy with a lazy foot

Found it strange to keep my left foot pinned to the floor, also kept lifting off the accelerator when changing gear!!!
When I picked mine up I had to stop off for petrol (tight ass dealer didnt put any petrol in - shame on you motorprovider ) Anyway. pulling into the pump I subconciously thought I had to declutch and me and my bro nearly ended up through the windscreen
-
DSG seems to be wining at the mo and ill add weight to that,
DSG every day
Don't worry about the warranty comment - there have been very little instances of failure to date and also its the same ( although smaller ) gearbox they put in the B Veron ..............!!!!!!!!
-
DSG for me - I've had 3 cars with it so far and have never had any cause for complaint.
Funny isn't it, how people are always afraid of accepting change when something newer and better comes along. People who shy away from the DSG saying that it is new technology or that they are afraid of what long term issues or costs maybe should look at the long term costs of the manual gearbox. The DSG wet plate clutches are designed to last the lifetime of the car wheras the "old fashioned" manuals will have to have one, two or more replacement clutches in the lifetime of the car. The hammering a manual gearbox will take from someone who isn't perfect with clutch control will also lead to eventual failures of it at some point.
Can you see where I'm coming from here guys? A DSG gearbox is more than up to the task of an everyday enthusiastic driver, wheras a manual clutch/gearbox is more prone to human error and wear and tear as a result.
I have to concede that on a clear bit of winding B road a manual is more involving (but simply not as fast as a DSG) than a DSG. As mentioned previously it is simply for a miniscule fraction of the time you drive the car that you would get that slight bit more involvement, but for the other 99.999% of the time you can enjoy the DSG more.
I haven't even got to the manual changes with the paddles or the way it blips the throttle on downchanges yet either
-
'I haven't even got to the manual changes with the paddles or the way it blips the throttle on downchanges yet either'
Hurdy, please don't tell me anymore  - I'm sold, I'm sold  wonder how much a kidney goes for nowadays (I think that and my GTTDI may cover the price of a GTI with a DSG box!
A GTI with DSG cruising down the road with Mark Knopfler on the hi-fi - heaven on earth!!
-
I haven't heard my turbo whistle yet grrrr!
-
Sorry, but MANUAL all the way, unless you are a southern softy with a lazy foot

Plz ingore the northern gravy drinker comment :smug: and heres one from the Soft Southern softy, it changes gear 19 times faster the a Ferrari Enzo's gearbox system, and thats a true sad fact and would give more on reselling the car with DSG. trust me you will like it and live with it period.Worth the Xtra £.If you dont have all the deposite, save abit more or sell your body for a few more pounds!
-
used to have an auto merc... ok for that but i prefer manual on my gti
-

But have you at least tried the DSG?
-
DSG
-
Manual for me, sure the DSG is great as an auto box but I prefer to drive my cars and I think you get more feedback from a manual box.
Sure when I am old and wrinkly (like Doc) I will prefer an auto box
-
im 33 and certainly not a sunday driver or old and wrinkly, i spose if i drove a manual i wouldnt be ecused of being a rampant clutch burner!!. Sorry but im standing up for us young folks, and i wonder what a formula one car would go like with a Clutch!
-
, and i wonder what a formula one car would go like with a Clutch!
A damn sight more interesting than the current situation where nobody makes mistakes with a missed change!
-
Formula 1 = "dull as dishwater", rally driving is where the fun is at...
IMHO of course!!

-
good call, vast majority use same gear tecnology as the dsg in the VW, they dont use clutch systems in rally cars, semi auto mostly
-
DSG Much better than the wife's "slushmatic" Mercedes auto...... you do put your foot down and wait half a second (thats with a V6!) then you go. But the V6 sounds nice.
On back roads I still at times miss a manual, but its great with the paddles and the quick gear changes. No feathering of the clutch on a tight hairpin though.
-
DSG is ze nirvana, ze biz, ze sh!te and all that, but I chose manual anyway. Was missing it when trying DSG, it's that simple.
-
While you guys have been discussing DSG vs Manual, I've spent the last fortnight driving with DSG on autobahns and alps in Germany, Austria, Italy. I guess you know what I'm going to say, but before I do, let me say that I spent about the first 25,000 miles only using D and S modes but after some high performance driver training I now use the paddles and drive it exactly like a manual. Am now nearly at 39,000 miles.
DSG is very very different from any automatic. You are able to override at any time and the learning curve is quite steep because so many combinations of options are on offer. the only time I use D now is when in villages/towns/cities where it's more important to concentrate on not getting lost or being in the wrong lane etc. I can assure anyone who has doubts that driving fast on alpine twisties in DSG Manual is just as involving as a conventional manual and just a bit safer as it's good to have both hands on the wheel!
-
I have lived with DSG for two years now and I don't think I could ever go back to a normal manual.
The "thump" you get from the exhaust on full throttle up changes and the perfect heel and toe down changes still put smile on my face.
The fact that you can pull into small gaps in traffic knowing that you are not going to miss a gear change and have a 40 footer in your boot.
The fact that you can put it in "D" on the way to work, turn the radio up and follow all the other sheep and then take the "b" road home put it in manual and have a blast.
New M3 will Have DSG
New EVO will have DSG
2008 Porsche 911 will have DSG
Manual is so last year
-
I think DSG is winning

Dunno if anyone has seen this before, just to put the final nail in the coffin!

Cheers for everyone's input. I'm going to hang out for a DSG GTI, just need to find one at the right price! This might be difficult as they're quite rare in black with 18" Monzas. If anyone knows of one for sale, let me know!!
-
I was a die-hard manual fan until I tried DSG with my R32 - it was AMAZING... I then made the mistake of specifiying manual in my Edition 30 for that 'retro' feel  I regretted it. My Edition 30 waiting for me at the dealers is DSG
