Its got an Audi 2.0L short block and a porsche cylinder head, and it runs k-jetronic fuel injection.
Very similar to early 8v golfs  :D

the wheels would be worth that alone if you got them polished I guess. Can't really go wrong for ?500 if you fancy a nice project car.

they are a bit 'hairdresser' but someone at work has one for track days so could be fun :)

they are likely to be these wheels

which aren't anything special

Got to be worth a monkey mate.  Even if it takes a year to get it sorted it'll be worth it.  The engines surprisingly simple.

At ?500 I'd go with it. With your tech knowledge it won't take you long to get it up and running, and it will be cracking car, especially for that money.

Not many other people on here can lay claim to running a porker as their weekend motor.......

I remember reading something that might of suggested the Porsche 924 was made by VAG.

The only possible problem is making sure that you dont need any special tools to get the head off.

get it bought 6' at ?500 notes it aint bad, if it aint go tthe wheels jv posted mayhave 'cookie cutter' wheels wich are worth a bomb to the air cooled brigade!! if i coul get em to fit me mk2 id be interested in em!! (if cookie cutters that is!!)

yeah from what ive been told it is like u say a vw block with a porsche head and running k jet,and as jv said it is a bit hair dressery!!! as its a seriously underpowered porsche, but wouldnt mind seeing that head etc on a golf it it would fit!!!!

 ;D

To be honest, if i was technically inclined and had the space and motivation, i'd actually take the car for 500.

Looking round the web, 924s are getting quite rare as they are definitely the unloved Porsche. Its almost the runt of the litter.

Tin

Watch out for leaking fuel tanks, a lot of work to change as the gearbox has to come out  :o. The head is a Audi one that has been machined to take the injectors and as far as I know is only fitted on the 924 (have heard that a carb head can be moded to work) and are prone to worn valve guides and cracking.

Runt of the litter?  More like cuckoo in eagles nest.  not only is it an audi engine block (which as mentioned appeared in the LT van) but the running gear is a mish mash of Audi 100 and Golf Mk1 parts.

actually, is that really a bad thing  :)

What year and engine is it?? The early ones are basically Mk2 Golfs anyway. You can pick an early runner up for around ?600 so don't rush into it. Early ones also have VW hubs and many other VAG parts door handles etc. I couldn't tell you what year they started making their own parts, but its certainly a good donor as most of the parts seem to wear better than on an early golf, don't know why, but Porsches just seem to have been looked after a little better, suppose its something to do with the status......

Ehh, 924= rear wheel drive.
mk2  golf= front wheel drive.

Ehh, are we talking about the same car?.

The porsche 924 was originally intended to be a new sporty model in the VW line up in the early 70's and it was designed by Porsche to use as many parts as possible from the then VW/Audi parts bin. The engine in the car is the 1984cc engine and was taken from the Audi 100. The gearbox was in the back of the car and that also came from the Audi 100 and the rear suspension used a similar set up to the 1303 super beetle.

VW and Porsche had already released a CO-OP car in the form of the Porsche 914 which was essentially a beetle under the skin and sales of that had been good so they had hoped to emulate the same success with the 924.

When VW released their then new front wheel drive models (golf, scirocco) they were unsure as to how they would fare after the buying public had been so used to having a rear engine, rear wheel drive VW and so the 924 project was dropped and Porsche bought back the design rights to the car.

The most interesting part about the 924 is that the car was built in the VW factory at Neckarsulm and porsche paid VW an agreed sum for each 924 made by VW.

Hope that helps Mr VR6

I'm not sure, but i am still thinking about it.
At the end of the day it is a very old car, could be more hassle than its worth.  :D

I remember seeing a yellow 924 in Street Machine or Custom Car Mags, running some sort of V8 lump I think, Im sure it runs in a  Pro street class or something, but it looks awesome....  Ive always been a sucker for Porsches, although the nearest Ive come in to owning one in the last 33 years is to have a set of 944 'Cookie Cutter' alloys on my beetle back in the 90's ... and to miss out on a nice 912 when my mate bought one back from Germany just after Id bought a new car...hmmph.. >:(

Therefore, i say BUY IT!!!!! ;D

Depends on whether its a fully galvanised model as then you got no rust worries.

I had a '77 Porsche 924 (2.0 Audi Engine) 13 years ago.  Bought it as a damaged repairable.  Body was OK but the engine, transaxle and many other bits arrived separately in boxes.

It was a very easy car to work on.  I had cylinder head off several times and even removed the crank for regrinding, using only standard tools.

It all went back together nicely and turned out to be a very reliable motor.  Great handling but not that quick by 1991 standards.

The ones to look out for are the 924S models with the 2.5 lite, 100% Porsche engine from the 944.  These are quick machines, but rare.

Even rarer is the 924 Turbo, effectively a 924 2.0 with a turbo and a bodykit slapped on.  These are even quicker and have serious classic status now.
