ive seen a e reg gti 16v looks nice has big bumpers fitted and nice cond, but no pas is it very heavy i expect its a nighmare at low speeds ands parking, an old mr2 i had one wasnt to bad but thats ligher
-
tis fine mate, I like it on my daily.
-
Nope. Not a problem with me either.
-
Yep totally fine, i agree, i prefer it without power steering, i think it gives better feedback at speed
And if you are a little weak it will build those arm muscles up hahaha
-
..just don't go silly wide on the wheels or small with the steering wheel.
-
i used to have no PAS on my old 8v mk2 and it wasnt that bad tbh until i put bigger wheels on and slammed it. saying that the 16v mk2 i just sold had PAS and its something i would definately look for if i was to get another mk2 :)
-
No PAS is better - more feedback.
-
If I had the choice I'd personally go for PAS, however it's not a disaster if it doesn't have it! Not having PAS is only an issue for me when getting out of my tight drive but thats about it
-
non-PAS is no big deal. my current 16v is non-PAS, way i look at it, is one less thing to go wrong. my old 16v had it and the seals went on its rack
the PAS rack is a quicker rack than the non-PAS though
-
I don't have PAS and its fine for me, parallel parks are a pain in the ass, but its because my reverse gear refuses to stay in, so I have to steer with one hand (heavy!). Day to dayish its ok, I'd still go for PAS for comfort, its not that detached from manual steering.
-
I was put off by a lack of PAS but 6months down the line and all is well! Apart from parking being a mini work out, at higher speeds it feels alot more "stable". And I can now carry at least double the amount of shopping bags

Only one way to know for certain, take it for a test drive.
It's all very well asking other people but it's down to personal preference in the end.

people who say MK2s are better without PAS generally havent driven one with PAS with the geometry set up right ;)
I converted mine to PAS and its only noticable when parking, when you're driving along it feels almost exactly the same :)
-
I've not driven one with PAS, but I can tell you its a shocker doing the old 3 point turn without PAS - jumping back in and driving it after being in the misses' mini you can really notice how heavy it is.
However, I don't really think about it anymore, but I do have a PAS setup in the garage waiting to be fitted
Of course when your moving its fine.
-
i dont mind it at all i took it off my last one as i thought the rack was knackered, turn out it was just a track rod end! nevermind a learing curve, i am not othered either way you get used to it,

x2 plus the shorter rack is much better for driving like a lunatic
-
yeah thats true i find when you have pas you can correct a skid a lot quicker instead of throwing a heavy wheel through your hands which feels like you are moving a piece of antique furniture.
-
I've had both and defo prefered the Power steering car - sooooo much easier to drive

Especially when u have fitted a 280mm steering wheel !
-
i had mozna blue 16v with 17" Wheels lowered 100mm this was a nightmare i fitted pas to it simple job got all parts of flea bay for 100 pounds made it diffrent car..

Recently bought a 1985 8v minus PAS. Thought the steering was disappointingly heavy - until I changed the grotty front tyres. Sorted! Wouldn't want PAS now and my missus reckons its OK as it is too.
-
No PAS, much better. Can feel the car more when cornering and going at speed
-
have either of you actually driven a MK2 with PAS though ;)
-
I've had 3 mark 2's, 2 without PAS and one without.
-
let's try that again, 2 with PAS and 1 without.
Build those arm muscles up at the same time as driving.
-
Must be becasue my rack is from a 16v, even quicker than a normal PAS rack same as G60 ones & Corrados

I would have changed the front tyres, but i built up some arm muscles hefting the steering around

Possibly a stupid question: Could one of these 16v/g60 quick racks be used without all of the power steering gubbins plumbed in? ie Just to have a quicker rack on a non pas car.
-
bit of hijacking but:
i have an 8v gti with PAS 90 spec and it basically needs a new rack and piping, but in the very near future im getting a G60 lump.. im going to assume i can use the 8v gti PAS steering with the g60 engine without any problems, but we all know what assumption does.
only reason i ask is im about to buy an 8v rack and pipes, dont want to have to change the rack again in a few months when im changing the engine lol!
