Alright. The GTI thankfully is staying. And this may very well be off the topic of the forum but it does kind of relate...
The father has decided he wants the new Mitsubishi Evo X. (Coming out next year)
So fine. This is how it relates to this forum:
MK1 GTI- Holy cow!
MK2 GTI- Not so good
MK3 GTI- Does my bum look big in this?
MK4 GTI- Overweight
MK5 GTI- Holy Cow!
Ok. Now the lancers (not sure how many there have been)
First one- Brilliant
Last one- Useless
So much like the Golf has gone through bad times and VW have revived the GTI name do you think the new Evo stands a chance to be brilliant again?
Opinions please (I must win this argument against my dad )
As you can guess Im not really for it.... I dont like it
Mike

I think it will be a winner, in fact i would have one now myself if the cabin hadn't been so plastic fantastic. On the whole its a very fast car and i will looking forward to test piloting the new one.
-
The new Evo X looks lovely from the outside. I haven't really seen the inside of the new one, but if it is anything like the last 9 then
For the last 9 generations:-
+ 4WD is awesome, accelleration is awesome, Handling is awesome
- Ride is bonkers hard, There is little accelleration outside the boost area, 4WD=power transmission losses and extra weight (although not too bad in the weight area!)
Fuel consumption rarely goes over 20mpg and you can get it down to 5mpg on a track day.
Servicing costs are roughly double that of your normal GTI due to a 4,500mile/6month service regime.
As an every day car I would consider many others first above an Evo.
I would think that the MKX version wouldn't be much different :undecided:
-
YAY! So far Im winning :lipsrsealed:

Hi what about the r32 there out down your way now (hows the footie stadium building coming on)
-
The R32 is a no go. We looking at a car that will cost more than the EVO and has a year and a half waiting list at the moment. So its not really practical or worth it to wait so long for a car.
The footie stadium... What footie stadium? (That should give you an idea)
-
I certainly wouldnt say the evo's have been ever anything but brilliant, shure they arent good if your going on long journeys, the have hideous fuel consumption and running costs and they styling leaves a lot to be desired, but thats not what they are all about, as a driving machine they are fantastic, and in the real world there are very few cars that would get you from point A to point B as quickly.

The Evo is a balls out in yer face car and therefore down to the individual concerned as to whether they like it or not IMHO. Cars like Evo's and Scoobies always attract the attention of the old bill and very often the theiving scumbags (wherever you live).
Sadly thre are some basics facts that you cannot get away from...
If you want space rocket performance you can expect space rocket fuel consumption...basic chemistry.
If you want a car that handles well you can expect harsh suspension .. basic physics.
If you want supercar performance at moderate prices you can expect plastic interiors..basic finance
Just my 2p.....

Each to their own, but I personally couldn't stand the Evo 4wd and handling. OK, if you are used to the glorified electronic traction control that is commonly called Haldex 4wd, then it might be fine.
I personally found the Evo handling to be extremely unrefined. I found the traction to be horrendous. When pushed really hard on wet roads, it was a case of "slip-grip-slip-grip-slip-grip" - as the electronically controlled diffs dialed in and out the power. I actually went to RalliArt in Dudley, and tried three different versions, one completely standard, another with a stage 1, and finally a stage 3 makeover. They were all aweful. When I questioned the RalliArt rep, he said that was how they were designed to work. I then took him for a blast in a Vectra GSI I owned, and the handling was nigh-on par with the Evos, but without any of the electronic intervention!
So my opinion of Evos =
Servicing costs are roughly double that of your normal GTI due to a 4,500mile/6month service regime.
I'd say in financial terms, servicing costs about 4 times as much as any VAG.
Don't forget, many Evos are often heavily modified, as often they promise much, but in reality, fail to deliver, without spending shedloads more on go-faster bits.
-
thought I'd throw in my 2p's worth
How many people would even consider these cars (scoobies are just as bad) if they hadn't seen them on telly being driven through the woods, I think they're all poorly made ugly "mid-life crisis" mobiles

Yup, subtle they aint!
Cars like Evo's and Scoobies always attract the attention of the old bill and very often the theiving scumbags (wherever you live).
What, as in constantly getting pulled over for speeding, or "is this your car, sir?" ???
Sadly thre are some basics facts that you cannot get away from...

Not really true. If they (Mitsubishi) properly developed their GDI technology (similar to the VAG FSI, but Mitsu couldn't get it to work properly), they would be able to get better fuel economy. However, because they lack any development, and merely use "chuck as much fuel in as possible" ethos, then they suffer with poor fuel economy.
My RS4, with over twice the engine displacement, and probably twice the kerb weight, can achieve better performance, AND better economy. Heck, even my last S4 (4.2 V8, without FSI) could whip Evos.
If you want a car that handles well you can expect harsh suspension .. basic physics.
Again, no. Both my RS4, and my last S4 out handled current Evos, and the suspension is far from harsh.
If you want supercar performance at moderate prices you can expect plastic interiors..basic finance
No, again. It only seems to be the Japs who make shyte interiors. Even on the NSX, the interior was shocking.

So its a no go for the EVO then?
I dont mind....

Tell daddy to go for something else, i test drove an Evo before my GTI, found it abit to much and you feel uneccesary rumbling and shaking which can get really annoying, sorry for any spelling mistakes

My daddy does not take my opinion into consideration. As far as he is concerned, if VW can reinvent and put the "fun" back into the GTI. Then why cant Mitsubishi? But I think its more because he has a Pajero and loves it to bits. Im sure he will come to his senses................. Eventually.
-
Pajero lol, that means wayne kerr in spanish xD.....At the end of the day it is your daddys money and if he doesnt mind spending on an Evo, well let him do so, he will realise after a good while that he could have spent his money better on something else :)
-
lol!
Yeah. But sometimes us kids do know better :lipsrsealed:

Aren't we talking about the new and yet to be released in the UK Evo X? And therefore we can't really judge excatly how good it might be.
Look at the Mk4 GTI - Very poor in comparison to the Mk5 and also earlier Mk's. So, the next generation Evo sounds as if it will have much to offer an enthusiastic driver. Plus it promises to look very good if this is anything to go by: http://reviews.cnet.com/Mitsubishi_Concept_X/4660-11443_7-6371800.html (http://reviews.cnet.com/Mitsubishi_Concept_X/4660-11443_7-6371800.html)

Yup we talking about the new one that is not out yet. It will apparently be available in SA next year
-
MK4 GTI- Overweight
MK5 GTI- Holy Cow!
this will probably annoy the MK5 owners here but;
i've got to disagree with this, agreed the MK4 is overweight and doesn't handle that well for a GTI, but the MK5 is even heavier, and its acceleration is becuase its got the most powerful GTI engine. obviously the fully independent chassis addresses the issued the MK4 had with weight.
don't get me wrong its a great car, but i don't think you can say its as good as the original
regarding the Evo's where i live Evo's a scoobys are synomomous with chavs, personally i'd go for the RS4
-
I agree. The RS4 is a beast of a car (Thats NOT your cue to go posting pics TT)
I realise that the MK5 GTI is not the same as the original. But when you look at what it has to offer for its time and for what is considered normal its a spectacular car. Im sure that if VW Could they would strip out the interior of the MK5 and fit a nice big engine. But its obviously not practical and nobody would buy it. I dont think....

Mk 1 GTi was the best hot hatch of its time, one of the fastest around, one of a kind, but then back then we all thought the Escort XR3i was a fast car and the dogs nuts aswell(well i did back then!).You cant possibly compare todays Mk5 GTi with its much older Mk1 brother. For one, it doesnt rattle, leak when it rains, and steam up soon after!, Technology has moved on and turbo's were just being thought of!!.The critisism the Mk4 i think was well deserved because the available Build methods and advances in tecnology in the turn of the century (2000 model yr on) you would of thought Vw would of done a better job, there isnt any argument, the totally fecked it up,.I think the current mk5 will be one of the best, as they are having to cut production costs on the new Mk6, and that tells you everything , its not gonna be any better then todays Mk5 .Ok it might speed up the production times but again what does that normally add up to...........
just my feeble oppinion

I agree. I mean for the French to be building a PUG that costs half as much that goes faster and then still branding it GTI should have been enough to wake VW up.

I agree. We have already decided that we will not be buying the Golf 6 when it comes out. Or at leat that what I was told. The MK5 is a complete step up ahead of the MK1. Look at what sort of acknowlegments it got.
Jeremy Clarkson- "They have put the fun back in the GTI, he even goes as far as saying its the best car in the world.
Shortly after that it won 2005 WORLD car of the year. Ok. I have no doubt that the new Citi-R (only available in SA) will tear the GTI up on acceleration and of course it will look almost identical to the MK1 except for rims etc and a revamped interior but it will never be the GTI.
I think the GTI is the best. Though maybe a bit overpriced :undecided:

Mk 1 GTi was the best hot hatch of its time
It still is
