Anyone can tell me what there difference in insurance premiums from having standard GTi chipped by say revo, i know the cost of chipping the car, i have abit of a dilema, i test drove ed 3 and loved the increase in performance but not too keen on trading my fully spec'ed GTi for equivelent ed30,(not preppared to shell out another 8k for the pleasure and prefer the interia of the standard Leather then the tartan.
cheers peeps
-
or u could get the e30 and chip that too :)
-
but the ed 30's not worth shelling out another 8 grand for same spec car, for less then £500 i could have a GTi thats faster and has more torque then standard ed 30!!(untill u chip the ed30 i know b4 someone says it), im not keen on a basic ed30 cus it would be a backward step and doesnt warrant throwing money away just cus it has the badge at the rear. What took me aback was having the extra poke really blew me away, so if i can do that rather then spending minimum of 4 grand for a low spec ed30.
-
did you change ur post? i thought u said something about costs?
18 something plus px of yours... that would mean there only offering you a free k for your gti.. youd b better of selling ur gti private then buying a e30 with the spec u want.

Phil
According to VW the 5 door ed30 with dsg is only 0.3 secs faster to 60, plus both cars are capable of being chipped to around the 300bhp mark? not sure the tiny increase in performance really warrants the 8k when talking of such little margins. Plus, I still really prefer the look of the standard gti over the ed30, sorry only opinion I know! Lastly if they ever brought out the R36 in golf format, you'd be gutted!
As for original ?, insurance costs when quoted by adrian flux (I think that's what they're called) turned out to be the same for chip v standard, not sure though if all insurers are as kind!

if i sell mine private, id get 18k aswell so dealer said mine book value is £15600, but cus of all the xtras and low mileage, he would give me
same as private resale which is very good. problem is steve is i would like an edition 30 with the same spec, but to find one new would cost £27000 or 2nd hand same spec approx £24500, I could go the route of box standard ed30 simular to yours but the car just then doesnt have the appeal. Hense why im costing up whether to keep mine, send it to revo down the road for £480 and have her chipped with extra 40bhp and abit more torque. Seeing that im not interested in breaking the 300hp Mark, which the ed30 would only do as is said. I just want the mid range pull that the dsg ed30 has over my standard dsg car.

keep it and chip it - depending on NCB's etc i wouldn't have thought your premium would increase greatly.
Try Martin at HIC in the Insurane section for a quote
Don't forget that VW don't do Laser Blue anymore
-
i have 10 years ncb, am 33, so maybe wont affect to much :undecided:
-
well it ain't gonna cost you 8K is it!!
-
Hi Phil,
Realistically I don't blame you for your decision. As you say, you have a good spec GTI and what you really desire is the poke and are not fussed with the addenda that comes with the ED30.
£500 will get it remapped and around £70 extra for the Insurance (TDI). I phoned around a few places and some just said no, others asked for silly money, HIC and Adrian Flux are well known and you could trawl the back of the Modified car mags for a decent deal too.
You could always chop it in next year for a year old ED30 when the prices have eased a bit!
-
and how can an insurance company check for any ecu remapping? do they rolling road the car after a claim?????

most don't bother but i believe the ECU shows the number of times its been flashed (ooo er) so if that doesn't tie in with the dealers records then bye bye insurance
-
wot he said :)
some remaps don't increase the flash counter though - GIAC, for one, I think
-
im gonna go with REVO remap if i get the all clear to, so do you know if that would show up on the map counter?or i could ask the garage , they would be able to confirm,im not gonna alter the look of the car in any way to raise suspicion and by the sound of it its not worth telling those insurance ripoff merchants.
-
Isn't there a remap which you can revert back to factory settings when you take it iin for service etc. I'm sure there is but I cant think of the name. I might look into that one myself.
-
maybe the switable version??? not sure how much one of those would cost

you willing to take that risk and invalidate your insurance?
-
depends on how much they are looking for, if its a few quid then i will inform but if its gonna be double the premiums then ill most proberly drop the whole idea
-
i think it adds around 10% or so to your premium :undecided:
-
Simple thing to do is phone up your current insurance company and ask. You will either get a "Yes, its £xxx more" or a "No, we wont insure you if you do".
Then you take it from there, either look about getting new insurance company or giving up on the idea.
-
have spoke to them , they would want £47.58 just to run to the end of my years premium, but couldnt quote me on a rough yearly figure because the minimum they can quote is 3-4 weeks b4 renewel . so does that mean an increase of £400 for a year! :embarassed:
-
Thats crap!! My insurance company didn't alter a thing, just asked for a copy of the company details - just gave them superchips website link to Ed30 graph etc..
-
whos your insurance company with Russ?
-
NFU Mutual, although it is part of my business policy so it may be different to a normal fully-comp policy, not sure really... :undecided:

Yebut - unless the insurer actually gets the car plugged into the VAS5051/5052, and then gets a link up with Wolfsburg, NO insurance company will be able to detect the flash count. :nerd:
Secondly, if you do tell porkies on your insurance renewal, providing the insurance company accepts your details, ie, they take your money, and give you a valid Certificate of Insurance - even if they subsquently find out about your porkies, they still have a legal obligation to provide Third Party cover. Therefore, you won't get done for no insurance, but you may loose any fully comp cover.
