Title: GEAR CHANGE PROBS!!!!!
Post by: oldbanga on 23 February 2004, 10:38
Im just about to go outside any get my hands cut to ribbons (again) on the darn gear linkage.
I have had a problem for the last year.I even got a new gear box and clutch on my mk2,after i had replaced all the linkage bushes!!

My problem is when the car is cold,it just does,nt want to go in to 1st or second without force.
Ive got another mk2 which i got the gear box off(which im planning to sell) and all the gears just slip in nicely like A NORMAL MOTOR...

It says in the haynes that you need a special tool for adjusting the the likage. And this tool is only available to a VAG dealership~(no thanks).

I can only asume that it is a bent gear linkage rod,or that the linkage adjustment has to be 100% spot on.
To adjust the linkage its best to get some help,as you need the gear stick holding in neutral whilst you un-do the c lamp around the main linkage rod (two 13mm) and 'BUGER ABOUT WITH IT'.
Seems like im not alone in all this-do you think it just the motors gettin OLD ??? :-\

It's not a case of it getting older, its a case of u putting more miles on it.

U could have a 20yr old car with 25,000 miles on it, thats serviced properly, maintained, cleaned every week etc etc and it'd run fine.

or u could have a 20yr old car with 150,000 miles on it, thats serviced properly, maintained, cleaned every week etc etc and it'll start playing up cos it needs new bits.

Thats why I like to keep with newer cars, cos "usually, not always" they are less hassle.

over 100,000 miles on a PETROL engine and things can start going wrong (not always, but can)

*and b4 u say it, yes even a 500mile car can get engine probs, but its alot more rare*

Give me MK2 any time.
After a lot of messing about ive sorted the gear linkage,it is just a case twisting and turning untill you get it right.
My car has done 151,000 and im the 10th owner.Ap[art from the probs with the gear box/linkage and the idle speed control valve it runs like a sewing machine.
It does 100 mile to a tenner and has never let me down just like all the other mk2's ive owned.
Had 3 mk3's and they are SH*TE. WOULDNT HAVE 1 IF GAVE ME 1!!!
VW let the GOLF down when they made the mk3!!!

my mk2 has 166300 miles on the clock and runs sweet as a nut. only problems I've had is an engine mount and the exhuast is blowing slightly. Nothing major I couldn't fix.

learn basic mechanics and you'll save yourself a fortune :)

the linkage on my 1987 mk 2 is better as it can be alined up easy without vw tools the linkage is set where as on early ones you had to aline the ball up....

on mine you just hold the gearlever in the middle and aline until the shift rod connects on it.....
up till now i have had to touch it apart from replacing a few parts ...
the mk 3 cableshift i have no ideas about but when i have one will explore how it works... i only looked under the shift boot on the vr6 and the cables look like a nightmare to setup.......i'mgoing to grease theses to prevent wear and future problems.....
