Title: Porsche 944 Turbo wheel into late Mk2
Post by: Geeman on 07 August 2007, 14:30
I have bought an '87 Porsche 944 Turbo steering wheel for my Jetta.

Unfortunately, it's for a small-spline steering column. The '91 Jetta I have has a large spline column. VW introduced a 'step-up' collar at a later date to 'upgrade' the steering lock security thing, so I've been told.

I can see the collar on the column that changes it from small to large spline., but... how the hell do I get it off without damaging anything?

All help and advice is appreciated!

Cheers,

G.

Use a Hub/Bearing puller on it, I threw mine away but now my mate wants one - how much do you want for it

How much do I want for what?

The large spline collar, or the steering wheel?

The larger diameter spline is just a sleeve which fits over the smaller one, was introduced in 89 I think. I took the one off my last golf to fit an earlier steerng wheel, did it using an old adjustable spanner tightened around behind the sleeve and a gear puller, pushing on the steering column. Came off ok, but I found it impossible to shift without the puller

Nearly set the car on fire last night I was so frustrated!

Had a hub puller, but I couldn't get the dame thing off. Had a hub puller, but nowhere to grip the arms onto. Even ended up taking the top section of the column completely out of the car and trying.

Grrrr!

Off to a breakers at lunchtime to take out a column from an early Jetta. Hopefully I'll be able to use this small splined column with my switchgear and solve the problem that way.

Then comes the horn problem... lol

thread the wheel nut on, then bash the column with a hammer ;)

I did this exactly the same, old adjustables are perfect for this job!

Put the nut on and whacked it a few times. Came off with minimal hassle.

Thanks for the tip!

Where can I get one of these collars, as I want to put my Passat wheel on the 'Dog?'

Sorry. I had to laugh. I know exactly how you feel sometimes. I have done exactly the same thing and ended up throwing the tools in the boot, slamming the car shut and shuffling off in doors in a black mood, swearing, heading for the drinks cabinet. Only to find out we have run out of bleedin´ ice! Come back to it next day and everything goes like clockwork. Just one of those things.
