Post by: moonsta on 22 February 2004, 19:37
:( theheater on my '88 8 valve is all cold, have checked the pipes into the bulkhead and the inlet is nice and hot but the outlet  is stone cold after the valve. do the valves go pete tong?? the car doesn't overheat and the system appears  to be quite fine with no water loss. don't particularly want to do a heater matrix if i don't have to!!!! any idea's?? :D

Hi, have you tried putting a water hose on the inlet, wait till the water comes from the outlet & quickly attach hose.
Re-attach inlet pipe & top up expansion bottle, warm the engine & feel the inlet & outlet pipes.
I had this problem on my girlfriends Golf & it seemed to do the trick.
Hope this helps.

first off id check for air locks
take the cap of the expansion bottle, set the heaters to max heat, then let the engine idle till it starts to boil over - this will get rid of any airlocks you may have

if it still dont give off heat then i would look at the bypass valves

open your expansion bottle and check inside where  the small hose that connects to the expansion bottle, then run the engine up and check that you get water pumping out when it warms up.
Mine was blocked with rust and i couldn't bleed the air out of the system for love nor money (swearing at it didn't work either).
If that's ok then it's your bypass valve.
