Title: ED30 in CAR Magazine
Post by: Hurdy on 03 August 2007, 15:40
Just bought this month's issue of CAR magazine and it has a 13 page spread on.....wait for it....

Audi R8 v Audi RS4 v BMW M3 v Porche GT3 v Golf GTI ED30 DSG

Don't get too excited though as the ED30 is "waiting in the wings" for most of the feature.

so what wins then?? Evo put the R8 ahead of a 911 the other month albeit not a GT3 so would be interesting to know the outcome.  Can you PM me please so as not to spoil if for everyone else

The GTI Ed30 does much better than you might expect. It's quite a balanced feature - Makes a change for a car mag!

RR - Should we tell them about the awesome standard GTI upgrade coming next year?

Hmmmm..... well then

Next year the standard GTI will get the 227bhp engine from the ED30

And here I was hoping it would remain exclusive

Should have known better considering they did the same with the MKIV anni.

Well, although the Ed30 engine is slightly different I'm still glad I've got what I have, and that's a modified GTI which will have the performance and handling edge on any standard Ed30 - Not that I'm into road racing or any of that stuff. There's always a newer or better model to come, whenever you buy anything.

Sorry, pressed the wrong button! The Porsche wins, followed by R8,new M3,RS4 cabrio and finally the Golf, which has a lot of praise heaped upon it.Its a German registered ED30 in white with the black wheels.Looks tremendous in the pics.Well worth the £4 if you fancy a read.

That was probably one of the most interesting articles i have read so far.  To be honest, doesn't really seem as though the point of the comparison was to pick out a winner.....just the fact that manufacturers these days are concentrating on the ability to produce performance cars that can be used everyday and not just out right performance (and thats why the ed30 was in the review - its the best all round hot hatch).  All the cars in the review had their advantages and disadvantages, they each belong to a different class, yet they all cover one thing - they are good all rounders, which is what the M3 is trying to do as well.  That gti did look pretty awesome though

I was right again about the standard GTI sharing its engine later on with the ed 30,  ,i posted the comments way back when the ed30 came out and was laughed at , so its there goes the exclusivity. good old VW. Dont tell me, colour coding will be as standard aswell.

Well thats really peeved me off... but I don't expect better from VW... Still the Mk4 Ani still holds its resale value far above the other Mk4 GTIs... even the 180 ps ones.

writing was on the wall when they launched the ED30; was only a matter of time before the standard GTI got the upgraded engine.

Interestingly though won't it delay the introduction of the MKVI??

Phil McCavity,

You can stop b!tching about the ED30 now and get yourself a standard GTI with the BETTER engine  and you don't even have to be embarrassed about it and admit that you really do like the ED30 after all :smug:

If I were you Phil, I'd wait till next year and get an Edition 30 cheap.. or wait for the Mk6 to come out.

We also Have CAR Magazine in SA. But the latest one down here features the new MK6 (I made a post about it) but not this.

Perhaps the UK and SA have different versions or something

i would doubt that vw will put the ed30 motor in the gti, just made up by the mag i recon. they would never sell any R32's if that happened

No mention of Rockinghams being optional in the price list on the VW site.

I know i looked - most likely the mag getting it wrong again, however i do remember that when i got the car that vw do a bit of cut and paste from the normal GTI options page so......
