Title: Servicing
Post by: mike_gti on 22 February 2004, 14:00
Hi

I need a new rocker gasket cover (or someting like that) and one or two other bits and pieces and don't really want to pay VW dealer prices. Anyone know of a good VW specialist near Macclesfield, 20 miles south of Manchester?? Appreciate any advice. Cheers.

dealer prices may not be as bad as you think, dont exclude them.. plus quality can be an issue elsewhere :)

I can't help you with a name of an independent.

However, I beg to differ with the previous poster. I have had some appalling experiences with VW main dealers. Too many to list here. The work has been adequate at best.

Conversely, I have had some excellent experiences with a local independent.

Once your car is out of warranty there really is no justification for taking to a main dealer.

I found taking it to vw, explaining the problem getting them to diagnose it for free and quoting, then go to an independant.  Then you have two opinions and a good comparison of prices.  Don't tell the independant what vw said though.

Also always get a quote from vw for the parts.  In my experience non original parts can be similar prices and worse quality.

I've been pleased with work at vw personally.  Must be lucky with a decent dealer nearby.  Heard more bad things than good about dealerships though.
