Title: Mk4 TDI 110/115
Post by: T_J_G on 02 August 2007, 20:35
Give me reasons for and against getting one, over my mk2 GTI (that i can't afford to keep)

Hopefully it'll be a 3 door, but would consider 5....

Bear in mind i'm 19 year old student.

Becasue they're GT's do they have any 'uprated' parts...

How come you can't afford to keep the Mk2 GTi, but can afford a Mk4 ?
Even if you have to spend say £500 to keep the Mk2 on the road, that's still less than the 3 or 4k a Mk4 will cost you.

not sure about the 110/115 GT versions and i think its only the trim level you get over the non GT's

the 130 and 150 had sport suspension (150 has same as 1.8T) except they are both group 13 which i expect is why you're looking at the 110/115

130 doesn't have the sport suspension as standard

Well I could do that, but i think I want a newer car with a few more luxuries(air con/heaters that work/electrics..). My mk2 has no luxuies everything is non-electric and so on.

I've looked at insurace on the 130's and i'm not ruling them out just yet.

isnt a mk2 digi gti group 13? so insurance would be simular to a mk4 gttdi130, only thing that would majorly effect it would be the worth of the mk4...

Yeah you're right mate. Insurance is a bit more.

Saying that the 150 BHP TDI's are registering as 130's with my insurer so i could afford one of those... a 150 BHP diesel would be perfect.

If you can get the 150 GT TDi go for it! I hear they are good.

I am struggling to belive that an insurance company would list a 150 TDi  the same as the 130 TDi. Someone correct me if im wrong.

I've ran 3-4 seperate registration through and that'sthe case, unless all of them are lying about their cars

I may look into the 130/150's as with a remap there isn't much to seperate them.

quite a few of the companies struggle to distinguish between the 130 and the 150 i think this is down to the DVLA database or something.  when i was looking to insure mine, some companies would show it as a 130 others would give you a drop down and others would know its the 150

both are group 13 but except they are different levels.

If you can get the 150 GT TDi go for it! I hear they are good.

if you can afford to insure it then go for it!

most 150's will have most of the toys as the people that bought them new, had the money to tick most of the boxes, and most stuff can be retro-fitted.  the only problem with the 150 is going to be finding one in your price range.

EDIT:

I may look into the 130/150's as with a remap there isn't much to seperate them.

yeah you can easily get the 130 upto the same level as the 150, but obviously the 150 will have further scope for mods

i thought that the 150 was group 15  :undecided: it was when i was looking for mine hence why i went for the 130 as it was cheaper to insure.

Any of the TDI's are good buys; the 115, 130 and 150 offer the better tuning potential.

but the 130 is the one to go for

Acording toWhatCar? the 150 and 130 are group 14. Can't work that one out as mine is also group 14, only has 115bhp and has no turbo? Wheres the logic in that?

hmm..it maybe. Spose i'd have to higher my budget but that's not really a problem. So i can get a similarly fast car, with better fuel economy and tax insred less than the 20vT route  although the 20vT is still an option. But i think i may aswell get a diesel for the reasons above.

yeah just seen that, parkers says they are both 13 and what car is saying 14  :undecided:

yours is going to be 14 becuase of the GTI badge, for example the megan dci 130 is group 9 where as the GT TDI 130 is 13/14 just becuase its GT

whats your daily mileage like?  if you only do a few mlies a day you could afford to run the 1.8T

Just another excuse to squeeze more money out of us . .  :(

I don't know my daily mileage, i would say i do 150 a week-ish (maybe less)

But the tax, insurance, running costs are igher on the petrol ones....and if i'm paying a bit more on insurance with the TDI i want somethig to save on (tax&fuel)

only think is you have to take into account the servicing with the diesel.

on mine every 20K is a major ~ £200, the 10K is oil and filter which i do myself ~ £50

don't know what the servicing is like on the petrols, but understand the diesels are more frequent

at the moment diesel is between ranges from being 1p cheaper to 1p more than petrol.  My weekly driving is about 90% motorway / A road so i can easily get 500+ from a tank, i think the 1.8T's do about 300 tops.

dubiously you'll save on tax too

Servicing won't be a problem as my mate works in an independant VAG garage

Thik diesel will work out for me and maybe go petrol when i get my degree and a good job!

which garage is that?  if its local might have to check it out next time

IMO diesel is the way forward, with the 150 you get practically the same performance as the 1.8T 150 and the same trim, yeah it might not handle as well becuase of the derv lump but you can go an extra 200 odd miles.

and handling can always be address.
