Hi,
I'm new to the site and new to the VW world. I'm in the process of trading my 98 Toyota Celica for a Mk4 Golf GT tdi (6speed).
I like to think the better MPG makes this a more sensible purchase however the extra power might not be the most sensible idea, but screw sensible it makes me smile
I have a few queries on the insurance from what i have read on parkers its a group 10 which is a step down from the celica, group 12, however my insurance company seem to think otherwise :undecided:
Picking this little monster up on tuesday can't wait!!!
2002 GT tdi 6 speed, its metallic green despite what the pics say

depends which GT TDI it is mate.
they came in 5 flavours;
110bhp (5 speed) group 10
115bhp (6 speed) group 10
130bhp (6 speed) group 13
150bhp (6 speed) non anniversary group 13
150bhp (6 speed) anniversary group 15
you'll want to check which GT TDI you're looking at, the hand book has an "options" sticker which details the power in Kw the sticker is also under the boot mat 110 is 150 bhp, 96 is 130 and don't know the rest
if its the 110 whilst still a good motor you lose a few things the 130 and 150 had as standard, however it can be easily remapped to about 155 bhp
welcome to the forum.

cheers for the responses everyone.
I have had the golf for over a week now and all is real good however i have a few queries, as i'm new to VW some of these may appear dumb so please bear with me.
1. ASR? im aware this is the traction control. However i'm unsure what it stands for i was expecting either TC or ESP to be on there, or is it just another version of one of these?
2. Why is the passenger wing mirror blue and the drivers not?
3. How many miles will the car run for after the 'please refuel' warning comes on?
4. I may not be used to the ride yet, but the front end seems to ride the bumps much better than the rear is this right or is it somthing to be wary of?
5. After a couple of hours of driving the car a turbo hose popped off at the engine intake, i think (rear left of the engine) when fixing this back on i noticed part of the alloy had chipped away. I have put a new horse shoe clip on and the hose has styed fixed on with no problems. Is this something which may come back to bite me in the ass at a later date?
I have some more questions regarding wiring my mobile phone up however i will spare you those and put them in the car audio section.
Sorry if this is long i'm just relishing the newness and trying to get my head round it all. :undecided:

anti skid / slip regulator
from audi site (http://www.audi.co.uk/audi/uk/en2/tools/glossary/chassis_body/traction_control__ASR_.html)
3. How many miles will the car run for after the 'please refuel' warning comes on?
depends how you drive it, i can get as much as 520 or as little as 480, the "reserve" tanks can give you 60 miles but i don't like to risk it, and you don't want to be running a derv dry

it could do, is it the hole the pipe goes into thats chipped or the hose? if its the hose i'd replace it just to be safe, the hole could be expensive as no doubt its connected to something big, i've had to replace one of my hoses and 2 clips.
can't help with the ride question, sorry
hows the car otherwise? you enjoying it?

2 - both should be blue; sounds like the passenger has been replaced at some time; they are blue to reduce dazzling from headlights at night
3 - i once got 560 miles before the light came on (got a 130)
4 - the rear end is the achilles heal of any MKIV golf; best bet is to get the rear suspension bushes changed; most garages will charge around £150 for this including parts.
Depending on which kit you have it should be plug and play

mine are both white, i'm sure the one color is the euro and one is British but not sure, what you might want to check is that both of them are heated, becuase if one has been changed the heating element may not have been connected properly.

Heated wing mirrors, thats a little posh for a diesel? :D

Its the section that holds the hose in place, i will try and get some pics of it posted.
Other than that the cars been awsome, drives well and the car feels so solid unlike some other makes i test drove.
Not to keen the sound it makes when its rev'd however AC means i can keep the windows up and don't notice it as much.
I'm sure ill get used to it though too many years with petrol engines must do that to you. Anyway the Mpg more than makes up for it i can't even remember the last time i was in a petrol station.

Any ideas where i can get a replacement blue mirror? + How can a check if its heated (wrong time of year to find out through normal use)
How can i check if the bushes need replacing?
Also the centre armrest doesn't seem to have catch on it, so when its lifted the lid just falls back emptying the contents all over the rear footwells.
I presume this isn't standard and is busted, just don't wont to get a replacement to discover this is the norm.
Sooooo many questions
Thanks for all your help.... I think I maybe transforming to a VW enthusiast
Cheers All

you should be able to feel the heat on the glass by touching the back of your hand against the glass, can take a minute to warm up, is activated but the rear window element.
the arm rest lid should catch, you should be able to get a new lid from VW but not sure how much there will rip you off. there is also a one way ratchet to keep the arm up once its up.

lol, theres still time to convert you!

I know I blabber on about knocking the desiels, its just the sound I cant get past. Iv kind of gone past the point of no return, so must insit on knocking it still.
I cant remeber the thread now, but I was tempted by the 150 GT TDI. Please answear honestly, I am getting my 1.8T in April, seriously, how close performance wise is the 150 GT TDI compared to the 1.8T ? The kind of MPG figures your guys are quoteing is really tempting me.
This is your chance . . .

on paper the petrol vs diesel are pretty much the same there is .1 sec in the 0-60 times, i don't know what this is like in RL as i've never gone up against one, if someone has an unmodified one could always give it a try. obviously the 1.8T 180 is a different story.
mpg wise i use mine to get to work every day, 34 miles each way, i can easily get 500+ miles before the light comes on.
the 150 is going to have the same spec as the 1.8T standard, and you'll quite often find them with better specs than the petrols becuase of the people that were buying them new. only downside is the minor service is ever 10K (oil and check brakes (not exactly going to break the bank though))
if you're doing more than 12K a yeah get the TDI, i'll let Rhyso have his say now
-
Yeah for sure get a diesel.
I've only had mine for over a week and I have so much more free time now i'm not in a petrol station every other day.
