My mates mk1 has developed a bit of a fault with the gearknob, you can push it into the floor, it still changes gear but its a little awkward, we got underneath it to have a look and where the gearstick comes through the floor there is a c shaped metal bracket bolted to the floor, we spent ages messing about with it trying to fit it back into this but everything we tried didnt work and it kept on coming back off.
Does anyone have any ideas?

sorry forgot to add, make sure that the shift rod is aligned properly and when under the car also check that you can move the levers by hand, if not one of the rods may have come unattached...
you can gearshift repair kits which have a ball type thing for the base of the actual gearstick, ive not fathomed how to fit this yet!
