Has anyone on here had this conversion done?
Or if anyone knows what this would involve please let me know, engine mounts?, wiring loom? etc etc
I have a mint mk 2 1.3 there is no rust and no dents so i thought rather than buy a ropey gti and have to do all the body work why not just convert my 1.3 to a gti(16v)
The 1.3 is a 1990

It's one of those cases of why build what you can buy! However if you have plenty of time on your hands then why not!
Not done it myself but from what i have picked up it will be a big job. You are looking at engine and associated bits, loom, Front and rear ARB's, Rear beam for the rear disks, suspension to cope with the heavier engine, front disks (bigger on the 16v i think), clocks and perhaps more!
To top all that off you will have to insure it as a modified car which may cost you more!

Well i do have a fair bit of time on my hands, i know i know, everyone i have spoke to so far has said just buy a gti!
I said above that i wil be converting it into a Gti, this isnt entirely true the only thing gti about it will be the engine i will be rebuilding/customizing pretty much everything else starting from a bare shell. This is why the conversion is so tempting the shell really is mint and should save alot of time and money on prep work etc.
I will be upgrading things like shocks and brakes so this shouldnt be a problem.
I will be buying a Gti to nick some bits off aswell.
