right, got it down to three choices!!
1- 3door black, 18" wheels, highline comp,cd multiplayer, folding mirrors and centre console for £21029
2- as above, but without cd player and mirrors, but with dsg for £21914
3- wait bit longer for 3 door black edition 30,highline computer and centre console for £22192
edition 30 over my starting budget, but not by too much are they really worth extra?
first option makes most financial sense, could drop multiplayer and mirrors, and get the best hot hatch with the those lovely wheels for £20609, makes best sense all round!
never thought it would be this hard to spend 20 odd grand!!
-
your first option makes good financial sense but without the folding mirrors (complete waste of time IMO), and you get a single CD player anyway.. the edition 30 is worth it if you can stretch though, just read some of the threads from us adoring ED30 owners!
-
Wait and get the ED30
On the ED30 you will get:-
18" wheels as standard
Colour coded body kit with a more agressive front lip spoiler
an extra 30 BHP over the standard GTI. The engine has upgraded internals and is basically the same engine as in the Audi S3.
A half leather interior with heated seats.(the best combination IMO)
Front and rear overmats included.
A limited edition car of which only 1500 are being built for the UK - which should mean better residuals for you considering you are only paying £1k over the other 2 GTI's.
You know it makes sense
-
Nicely sold!
-
Get the ED30, you will always regret it if you dont!
-
Ok one from the normal GTi club corner, residuals mean nothing with edition 30, show me an 07 with better residuals then a standard GTi with more extras....... sorry to break up the ED30 orgy here , but us porper standard GTi owners must be counted!!. but if buying your 1st GTi mk 5, then stretch to the ED30 if your a performance nutter and thats your thang, (not everyone is). If you dont like tartan/leather mix then cross off the ED30 from your list. i say get a Gti, with the most extras included as dealers will make you think its worthless on resale when its NOT.
afterall in my weak defense here, the Standard GTi is always a more highly rated car with 5 stars from Whatcar,(FACT) and the ED30 is 4 stars. (ducks and waits for the backlash!) both superb cars though and neither will dissapoint. |Must haves are DSG and posh headlights
-
To the average joe the Edition 30 badge will not make a difference. But to an enthusiast it would. Gotta say if I were in your position I would have the Edition 30.... but then again I am on a car forum so must have a slight interest in motors... average Joe would probably just pick the one with the most bells and whistles
Mind you, if I got any I would have to have Xenons!!!

Ed 30 - jumped up money maker if i have ever seen one.
All i hear is it has a S3 enigine blah blah blah - then buy a S3 !
I personally don't like the full colour coded body parts it makes it look like a TDi or something and the wheels are terrible, but these asre just my views before anybody shoots me down
As for the folding mirrors, defo a waste of money just fold them in once you get out of the car.
There seems to be a bit of a trend for having to have loads of unnecessary gear in cars at the moment, its a car for getting about in, not a house with the luxuries
Go for what you want and what you really need, it doesn't matter what you buy you'll get a lot less for it once you get round to selling it
Rant over

 aha, and what about the price?

Obviously i wasn't bringing money into the equation
I personally like some of the black trim on the gti to break up the solid one colour look of some models
I previously had a VR6 in white many years ago and it needed the black trim to set if off at its best

Haven't we heard this umpteen times before Phil? And you'd get an Edition 30 yourself if you could by your own admission... The 4 and 5 star rating was given by a Jock who doesn't know what he's talking about - didn't even know about the internal Ed30 changes... Most Ed30 reviews - esp 6 months ago were ill-informed and factually way of the mark in many cases...
If you want a proper review of the Ed30, read the recent review of the manual version in VW Driver magazine when they called it 'the bargain of the century' in terms of what you get and were full of praise for it. They also initially were lukewarm about it - in a previous review of the Ed30 in DSG guise - as they didn't have all the facts to hand which they admitted in the 2nd review of the manual version.

Of course illyan, Vw mag are gonna big up the Ed30! .Sorry im gonna get drawn into this once AGAIN, knocking me back OR dismissing what i say, but im afraid im gonna stick with my opinion , if you think "whatcar" and others write total nuts then thats up to you, if i had money to keep throwing at cars like you do then yes as I DID Actually say in a my previous note if you cared to read it, ive nowt against the ed30, just making cases of positives and the negatives for buying either one. pat1967 who posted is new to the forum illyan so sorry to "harp on" in your words
now do me a favour and give it a rest
