Title: Engine temp sensors

Having a problem with my MFA and rev counter, they work intermitently but every time they go off the engine temp warning light flashes on a and off for a few seconds. I know my car has no over heating problems so i'm thinking a faulty sensor could be causing my MFA and rev counter problems. Could this be the case? if so could anybody tell how many engine temp sensors there are and where abouts they are located? Any help would be great. Cheers.

Sounds more like a loose connection as the speedo is mechanical and everything else is electrical, the temp light flashes when you turn the ignition on so would flash as the power comes back on. There are 3 senders all on the right of the head if it's 16v not sure on an 8v.

Yeah forgot to mention its a 8v. So maybe a dodgey wire or a loose sender

Hi,

As said it could be a bad connection to the back of your clocks.  Use RubJ's post here if you want to know how to get them out http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=10385.0

First, check this valve cover to coil bracket earth cable is present.  Take of and clean the ends with some sand paper.  You can also clean the connections to the coil as this is where the rpm signal is collected.

The bottom right of this pic show the water temp senders (RHS of cylinder head front).  The blue one is for the engine management the black one for the dash temp gauge.

I would suggest, that the temp gauges are not at fault coz the rev counter acts up aswell:

1) Check earth strap
2) Check multi connector at back of clocks
3) If no joy I think your clocks are at fault, so get bidding on EBay.

I'm wondering if i'm having a similar problem.

My 8v doesn't seem to have a temp problem, at it's hottest the needle only goes slightly over half but evey so often the warning light flashes, this can be from cold or warm and can stay on for any length of time.

Could mine need the same things checking?

Warning light flashing whilst everything else stays on is the level sensor in the header tank probably needs a bit of a top up :)

that earthing strap you pointed out in the first pic is broken on my car. i had no idea what it connected to so ive just left it dangling. everything works correctly still!!! i think  :laugh:
