Title: GTI drivers friendly??
Post by: paulm007 on 25 July 2007, 13:34
As we are all discerning gents (and ladies ) we obviously have good taste by driving the GTI/R32/ED30.   :smug:

I have seen a few on the roads around me, (Melksham Wilts) and have begun raising a hand or flashing my lights as a way of saying Hi to those other sensible people, expecting the odd nod or wave back but so far f**k all

Is this a personal thing or do GTI drivers not ack each other??

I guess they don't feel the same affinity to the GTi brand as (for example) Mini owners or Beetle owners do.
Many people just get the GTi as an upmarket family car with no real enthusiasm for the GTi marque and it's history.

I've not experienced it in the GTi or R32, but used to in the Reliant Robin, many years ago.

I waved at a fellow GTI driver on the motorway over the weekend as I over-took him, cos he was looking at my car. Didn't get any reaction from him though

When I used to drive my camper I'd get waved at all the time by other camper owners, but that's pretty common anyway...

I tend to find it hit and miss. I get some reactions the odd time too, others not so much. I guess it depends on the mood and friendliness of the other driver! Personally I think it adds to owning GTI/ED30/R32 if you wave to a fellow driver now and again.

i hardly get any acknowledgement from GTI owners. Alot of them make eye contact but no wave or anything like that. In fact, since owning a gti i have had no acknowledgement from any MK5 GTI owners

I get people in mk4 golf's, leon's, fiesta's, corsa's giving me a polite nod now and then but most of those are young lads.

Alot of people do look at the car though. Especially at petrol pumps, traffic lights and at the shops. I've had alot of people have a look inside.

We got a friendly wave and nod from a R32 owner (Female owner that is) before she kinda put foot and was gone...
But other then that we got a few waves at first but then had the Xeeenons aligned and thats where the waves stopped.

But one thing about this car... Is the stares you get. People who ask things like "Why would you buy a golf? Its only a golf" usually end up staring at the car.  We had a recent case where we were travelling on a freeway and my father slowed down cos he knew there was a camera coming (Therefore the cars behind us caught up, those being Honda and a Smerf, cough I mean a Merc) and as we passed the camera my dad floored the car and as you guys know. She picks up speed rather fast and to our surprise the Merc hooted and the Honda flashed its lights. When we stopped at the robot after branching off the freeway the Merc driver gave us a thumbs up and the Honda Driver commented to my dad about the car before the robots changed.

You must admit. Everywhere you go the car attracts attention. Im in a boys hostel and our GTI gets more attention than my friends dads M5 which is modded. You drive around a corner and there is always someone looking at the car. To me that kind of makes me feel better. We had a Porsche Cayenne for a day and nobody batted an eyelid.

And yes. people dont understand the history of the car and therefore see it as just a golf.... Or in some cases a diesel engined car with mods. lol

Do you know I find that of R32 drivers......when I overtake them in my ED30

Back on to the thread topic.......

I was leaving my local audio dealers and lo and behold a Red ED30 pulled up at the junction from a housing estate. I waved and he waved back.....must be an ED30 thing

Having said that if someone waves at me in any Dub, then I always wave back.

I find it quite difficult to wave to other GTi owners when I've got both hands clamped to the steering wheel with my knuckles turning white

I've had that a few times and assumed they couldn't give a flying whatever.  But hey, at the end of the day it is a car to them and thats fair enough.  There are others though who do flash their lights/wave/nod or just stare...

flashing and waving is reserved for old school cars...

....I wave at Mk1 and Mk2 GTI's and Mk4 and 5 R32's as well as Mk5 GTI's. It's just a way of sharing one's enthusiasm for such cars: "Aren't our cars great? I've got one too". It may have started as a tradition for old school cars but there's no justifiable reason why it can't be applied elsewhere. Anyway, the GTI is an iconic car.

Well good to see its not just me anyway!!

But I agree with RR above, why not a nod of a wave to other GTI owners, I am going to continue until I get arrested as a lunatic

I saw a nice black gti at tesco's in Midsomer Norton this afternoon, I gave him a nod, couldn't see if he responded as it was lashing down and my wipers were only on intermittant.

A smile and a wave, if even just the raising of a finger, can do no harm and only spread a little joy.

It always feels better to see a  than a

well for what it's worth i normally give a nod or a quick flash to other GTI drivers , why ? well i hope that they are as proud of their cars as i am of mine and happy to be part of the GTI family. Maybe im getting sentimental in my old age, but i feel good in the car and proud of it.so i will carry on doing it i guess.
