well this is either going to be great or a nightmare.
picking this up later.
16v with PAS,steel sunroof and Air Con.
-
after a good look round this morning things are better than i thought.
needs a bloody good polish
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/rfront.jpg)
obvious things that need sorting.
mechanical
worn ball and socket on the gear lever.
clutch pedal stopper is missing so the clutch has a foot of free play before it bites.
needs a good service and cautionary cambelt change.
interior
new gaiter for the gearstick
few trim clips missing for the door panels
no ice in it what so ever !
sunroof motor missing. (temp fix with manual winder)
non tilting passenger seat
air con not charged (or broken?)
however the drivers bolster and all the cloth on the seats is A1 and the headlining is mint-not a mark
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/int-1.jpg)
body
bonnet is FUBAR- this pic doesn't do justice to all the cracked paint there is!
small rust spots on the lower drivers door and rear panel.
light keying mark all down the passenger side
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/keyed.jpg)
plans once most of the above is done
remove all but the rear VW badge
layflat wiper
smoked rear,side and front indicators
-40mm
badgeless grille
remove black window surround and door trim stickers
swap red bumper piping for black
15" bbs ra's
it came with a pile of old bills, mot's ,tax discs etc and has had a lot of TLC over the years.
oh and a magnex SS backbox which is nice and suprisingly quiet.
-
went to the scrappy this morning for a few odds and sods
parcel shelf support and dash surround were the main things i went for but lucky for me the only mk2 they had was a 16v so i had the sunroof winder as a temp solution to my missing motor problem.
had a few clips and the iso connecters for the stereo as mine has the usual 18yr old car chopped wires.
I paid for everything - theft is a crime.......and there was a bloke who works there hanging about.
also got the under bonnet insulation but i'm not allowed to bring that in and clean it in the bath. stupid girlfriend
how dirty!
after a quick shower and a bit of shower gel on the carpet bit the parcel shelf support is now cleaner than me!
also got some new pedal rubbers- boring , i know.
-
well they're all done.
i was a bit worried the suroof motor was missing as a cover up for the sunroof being jammed but no, fitted the manual winder and back it went.
it was a bit stiff but apparently its been shut for over 3 years.
sprayed plenty of WD40 down the runners then greased all the moving parts and runners with copper grease. spot on , now all we need is some sun.
pedal rubbers were a right barsteward to fit. probably easier if you warm them up a bit with a hairdryer.
also laid the rear wiper flat. easy
-
managed to get the major part of the boot done today.
started peeling the sticker back yesterday but it started raining so had to stop.
got it all off but was left with the dreaded sticky residue.
once i'd got all that crap off ,using white spirit a terry t towel and a hell of a lot of elbow grease i gave it a t cutting.
then just put the spoiler back on and the lay flat wiper. job done.
now i just need to spray the wiper arm up , sort a few stone chips ,colour code the number plate plinth and get new plates.
-
did a bit more work on the boot lid today.
thought i'd try and sort some rusty stone chip type spots.
1. nasty rust spot
2. scrape away all the loose paint and rust with the tip of a stanley knife. you need a steady hand.
3. paint on some kurust
4. with a fine artist paint brush fill in the chip with anti oxidising paint.
now all i have to do is find a decent tornado red paint match. Halfords are worse than usless. the tornado red they had looked more like tornado burgundy. I'm not sure how succsesful this is going to be but we'll see. :undecided:
also t-cutted a bit of the roof to see what the paint could look like. I'll try to do the rest of the car tomorrow and hopefully also fit the bonnet i won on ebay.
off to meet Neaty now to get a set of BBS RA's.
EDIT : got 'em , cheers Paul.
-
fitted the wheels i picked up off Neaty. need two new front tyres...toyo's i think
off to get my shiny new bonnet now.
-
slight mix up over the bonnets. he gave me a corraddo bonnet. i was so busy checking paint quality that i didn't notice. :embarassed:
hopefully I'll have the right one sometime this week.
-
had 2 toyo proxes fitted this morning and had the tracking sorted.
+7 degrees out
he said the most he'd seen was +8. no wonder the steering felt heavier turning right.
handles like a dream now.
also t-cutted the roof and peeled the stickers off the sides. no pics yet. sorry.
-
my tinted lights and 1 of my bumper trims arrived today so on they went.
starting to look more like it now.
spot the dent.
-
popped the badges off and started work filling etc.
i'm leaving the vw badge on as the only proper way to fill such a big recess is to weld a plate in it first.
managed to fill ,sand , guide coat and fill again today.
-
not much to show today. did a first coat of red on the back end but ran out of paint and the wind was picking up anyway.
did most of the black bits with kiwi scuff guard
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/blackedup.jpg)
and put the slightly less dinty front valance back on. not perfect but it'll do til i get a new one.
hopefully the bonnet situation will be resolved tomorrow and then it's off for a cambelt change and full service.
I'm getting the service done at a garage this time as i want it up on the ramps to give it a good look over for any worn parts, bushes etc.
-
finally got my new bonnet sorted and also laid may hands on a single light grille.
also managed to sort the lack of I.C.E today. not going for anything special , just a 4x45 head unit and standard size but higher quality replacment speakers.
-
picked up some more paint for the rear end today.
from the same place as before, same paint code ,same bloke doing it..............completley different shade!
might aswell have asked for bleedin lime green for all the use it is.
-
decided to have a look at the non tilting passenger seat today. after looking at a few posts about it i decided to take the plunge.
I took the seat back off, soz, no pics of that but it's dead easy.
push the 3 round plugs on the plastic trim covers out from behind and the trims pop off.
push the circlips off and waggle the seat back about til it comes off.
once you have the seat back off the fiddley part begins.
==============================================================================
this is how the wire is supposed to locate in the hook that should lift when you pull the lever up.
this is where one is missing from
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/2.jpg)
these four spikes need bending upward to allow the fabric to be pulled up
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/3.jpg)
leaving something to gouge your hands and arms on. nice.
once you've lifted the cover over the spikes you should be able to pull the cover 2/3rds of the way up the seat and see whats broken.
in my case this, the diagonal cable to the inside hook.
it should go across the seat back , through the loop , through a slot to the hole (arrowed) in picture 2 above
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/6a.jpg)
thats as far as i can go til i get a new cable. i understand they can be picked up for a few quid from ECP or GSF. i'll find out tomorrow.
-
seat back part 2.
=======================================================
got the cable from GSF - £4.41 . part no. 191-881-596a. remember thats for the longer inner cable.
this is how it should fit on the outside of the seat
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/route1.jpg)
then across the back to the inside
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/route2.jpg)
once its fitted and working it's time to put it all back together.
pull the seat cover down then pull the bottom up first making sure you put the metal loops (ringed in red) over the corresponding spikes.
it should now look like this
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/bottom.jpg)
then pull the top over and bend the spikes back in.
and thats it. now just to refit into the car.
oh, and dont forget to look at Myleene Klass's arse in the top left corner.
-
bloody dealerships!
just phoned to tell me that the bumper strip i've paid for, had one of , and am waiting for the second is now obselete.
balls.
Also had the wrong trim clips that were ordered when i went up for a refund.
morons.
ECP aren't much better sometimes either. The lower grille i've been waiting for had been cancelled for no reason so is now on order again.
oh well, tomorrow is another day.
-
today might be another day but i still haven't got my grille from ECP
I have however got a few new bits.
Genuine VW speaker grilles to replace the door pockets ( now on ebay )
dead easy to fit once you've run the cables to the doors.
needs a good scrub inside now. :embarassed:
also got some smoked side repeaters. they were cheap and didn't fit at first but a bit of sanding and trimming and they're fine now.
just the front lenses to get now.
more good news is that my obsolete bumper trim is on its way from a VW dealership in sunny Scotland. should be here next week......probably about the same time as the grille from ECP.
EDIT: grille arrived this morning (16th)
-
won a badgeless grille on ebay as the free single lamp grille i got is in pretty bad nick and held on with cable ties.
I've decided to gti it up a bit with a red stripe.
now just to wait for a bit of sun and warm to paint it up and finish the back end of the car.
I managed to find a place in Sheffield called "Sheffield refinishing supplies" ,who'll match the paint rather than just use the code. thanks to Dabill for that!
-
went to the scrappy this morning for a few more bits n bobs.
the main one being the weighted shift rod.
as anyone whos done this mod will know, it's one of the easiest and satisfyingly cheap you can do on the mk2.
I also finished the cosmetic mods on the front end.
i've got a set of -40mm springs to fit which will also mean losing the gti front spoiler and replacing it with a CL version as it scrapes like mad as it is.
EDIT : ^after lowering it, i've learned to live with a bit of scrubbing cos it looks wicked.
-
finally got the rear end painted.
not totally happy with the match but it'll do til/if I get a respray.
-
I've developed a slight leak in the fuel accumulator/ reservoir area.
from what i can see it's coming from either the top of the pump housing itself or one of the fuel returns up there.
I'm going to get a new housing anyway as there not that much and i've seen a few threads about them being cracked. hopefully it wont be too much of a pain as there seems to be a fair few rusty nuts in the general area.
-
well, got to the root of that little problem. the housing was split around the base of the return to the tank. I should get a few more miles out of a tank now.
while i was spending i thought i may aswell get a few bits needed for the suspension change.
I've already got the springs, PI -40 mm , I used them on my old Jetta and was pretty impressed. I would normally use Eibach but they're not really within budget.
I'm replacing the balljoints in an attempt to sort the slightly heavier steering when turning right.
It's not too bad but it is a bit annoying even tho' I've pretty much got used to it now.
I also got these
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/pins.jpg)
I'm not that arsed about bling but I couldn't get any plastic ones from the scrapyard as there were none on any of the vw's they've got.
I'm pretty sure they eat 'em or summat.
oh yeah, the bumper strip saga. After waiting weeks and going to VW 3 times in one week to pick it up when it was supposed to have arrived each time......I've finally given up and got a refund.
I'll have to scour a few more scrappys for one i suppose unless anyone reading this is aware of anywhere i can get one from. ECP and GSF don't sell the strip ,only bumpers with it as part of the moulding.
-
killed two very annoying birds with one stone this morning......the girlfriend and her mother !
only kiddin.
my exhaust has been knocking on the back end since I bought the car and after having a look yesterday I noticed the two ring rubbers on the backbox weren't even under any tension.
I replaced them with smaller ones curing the knocking exhaust and whilst out on a test drive i realised that the vibration I was getting through the pedals at 2800 - 3200 rpm has now also disappeared.
best £4 i've spent this week.
-
got the last parts i need ( afaik ) for the suspension.
I have an invoice showing the fronts had new inserts about 4 months ago so theres no point changing them but i have no idea how long the rears have left so while it's being dropped i might aswell change them.
I know some people say you shouldn't put standard struts with lowered springs but it's only going -40mm and i really don't want rock hard suspension as Sheffield is the pothole capital of Europe.
Also, I don't do that many miles so wear and tear will be minimal.
Hopefully , circumstances and weather allowing it should be done this weekend.
-
had a bit of an issue with the coolant side of things but after reading a few threads figured out it was an airlock caused by a worn o ring in the expansion tank lid.
replaced that with a genuine Blue VW one and the flywheel viewing hole cover thingy ( tech speak - don't worry ) in the gearbox.
no pics cos they would be well boring.
-
just got a call from my mate with the big flat drive and we're going to lower the car in a bit.
-40mm springs
new rear struts
new bump stops
new ball joints
new front top mounts
i'll post pics tomorrow.
EDIT : and i've just won an early corrado sunroof motor so hopefully no more winding for me.
-
should look even better when the springs have settled.
it now has better ride quality than before as the rear dampers were both leaking oil and all four bump stops were disintegrated and both top mounts were shot, one had half the bearing missing  .
had a bit of a hard time undoing the front top nut on one side but other than that it was a piece of pee pee.
corners are so much more fun now.
-
thought i'd update the list of things to do.
I've just finished sorting the rust spots on the drivers door. I know they'll probably come back through even though i went back to bare metal, kurusted and used alot of anti rust primer.
so the few little bits that need sorting to bring it back to where it should be are.
1. new numberplates
2. sunroof motor fitting ( when i can bloody find one )
3. air con looking at ( might be leaving this til next spring to give the wallet a rest )
4. gear lever ball and socket replacing
after that its all enhancements really. I'm not sure what yet but i'm sure there will be something that catches my eye.
I'm trying to get the other half to pay for a respray as an engagment present but she says it's not very romantic. Apparently " red is the colour of love " is not a good enough reason. women eh
decided to get new plates today ( looks wonky in the pic but it's not , promise )
following are the reasons that - 40mm on the suspension is the limit.
these are my only routes to and from home
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/myhump.jpg)
-
just a little shot to see the progress made.
i'm pretty happy.
-
decided to see if a mk3 handbrake would fit....and yet again VW's interchangeability does the trick.
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/1-1.jpg) undo this screw
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/2-1.jpg) unclip the switches ( soz this pic is reversed , they are on the left of the handle)
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/3-1.jpg) undo the two nuts
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/4-1.jpg) pull the lever from the floor and twist it out of here
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/5-1.jpg) you may have to drill the switch out and bolt it back on as it won't quite fit through the cover that goes over the mechanism with it on.
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/6.jpg) nasty skinny plastic thing V soft padded black leather
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/monkeyalan/7.jpg) fitting is reverse of removal
-
had a spare heater facia that had a blown bulb so pulled it to bits.
Got a mate to fit a new LED and I painted the grey plastic silver just to see what it looked like.
the paint is a bit (well, alot) rough but it was just a mess about really.
I'll stick it in tomorrow and see what it looks like.
-
just failed my mot but i'm happy enough.
i was expecting more tbh but just a worn ball joint and binding brake.
they're my jobs for tomorrow.
-
not much of an update really but I now have 12 months MOT.
replaced the ball joint, fitted a new caliper and brake pads and throught it went.
relieved for another year.
-
decided to sell it. no good reason , just boredom.
stuck some P Slots on as i'm selling the BBS RA's seperatley ( see for sale section )
the rear lights are going back to standard too.
I always wanted a MK2 Golf GTI , now i've had one..... it's been fun .
I might have another as a toy when i have the space.
