Where you on a rolling road at tickover? :smug:
Seriously, I had 46 mpg using premium unleaded last week from my 16v. 5th gear @ 40/50 mph in traffic for 10 miles or so. Bl**dy good I thought.
-
I was driving along the A2 at a steady 56mph in 5th gear and reset the MFA thingy, it went straight to 72 then up to that then reduced and settled at high 50's!!! I was shocked and had to take the pic!
-
Blimey, I have trouble getting mine above 40mpg! ...Maybe I should ease off the loud pedal a bit!!

likewise... average around 30 on the motorway unless i calm it down a bit
-
I had 99.9 on my VR6
Same as you, except reset MFA while foot off throttle, just letting it roll on a dual carriageway (there was a roundabout in a few hundred yards so I was just letting it slow down well in advance).
Sometimes I try to see how conservatively I can drive it... on an average journey of 10 miles or so I can generally get over 33MPG if I'm careful, but that's no fun. Normally I'll get around 25MPG out of a tank on average.
-
I normally do about 33mpg per tank and thats a complete mix of driving, traffic (rush hour) and i do like to clear it out once of twice a day!!!!! There a nice narrow lane just before i get home!!!
-
reset the mfa when in heavy traffic....I had 2.1mpg show up!!!!
-
 Doubt thatll get beaten!!!!!!!
-
The highest I have ever got my average mpg to is 40 and that was for a split second and that involved spending half the journey rolling in N.
I've got the MKIV 2.0 8v so similar if not the same engine as some of you guys.
-
Premiun unleaded definitely makes a difference of about 4 mpg at the frugal end. Old mk2 8v had similar characteristics. Not worked out yet whether the increased cost of the premium fuel is worth it.
Of course, bu*ger all point in having a GTI if you are going to drive it like an OAP, so I too give the injectors a good blast now and then. Mind, some of you boys must drive like Lewis Hamilton - just don't go out in the wet.....

If you're decelerating, it's more efficient to leave it in gear than leave it in neutral... reason being in neutral a small amount of fuel is still required to keep the engine ticking over, but if all the engine is doing is effectively being a big brake then the engine management system is clever enough to know there's no point putting any fuel into the engine, since the motion of the car is enough to keep the engine turning. especially if you're braking because any fuel going in would actually act to slightly hinder your attempt at slowing down I suppose.
My own playing around seems to confirm this too, although I've not really properly tested it out.

I do tend to drive around like a bit of a grandma a lot of the time... comes with having a pregnant fianceé in the passenger seat I guess .
I'm a chicken in the wet though... had a few hairy sideways moments  so I tend to err on the side of caution now. :undecided:
-
Iv had one near miss in the wet, never again.
-
^^ Haha oh yes, I had one or two scarey moments in my old nissan 200sx - that car was so much fun in the dry, but as soon as the road got slightly damp it was a liability!
I do miss her, but she definatly taught me to be more careful in the rain!!

I swear it's only all those hours wasted playing colin Mccrae and the like that stopped me wrapping it around a tree last time - a country lane I thought I knew suddenly had a vicious left-hander!. in fact my missus' dad wrote his car off on that lane only a week or two later (when he was following me :embarassed:) but that was because some tw@ had left 5 bags of cement just around a blind corner . I managed to avoid them, he managed to lose the rear on a combination of mud and cement dust, and went into a ditch/tree on the inside of the corner.... not a very nice thing to see in your rear-view mirror.
the VR seems to nicely squeal/understeer a bit when you push too far in the dry, and you can just ease off and all is well again, but in the wet it seems to just let go at the rear without much warning.
-
Nissan 200 .. a well behaved RWD car compared to my old 2.0 litre Capri... The merest sniff of a corner in the wet and I would be sailing towards the uncharted waters of the ditch...damn fine car otherwise.. German built too
-
I had a mk1 Escort with a 1660cc twin webber engine when i was 18....in the dry was ok but in the wet (if it would start) it was lethal!!
-
Must be something wrong with mine then co i'm only getting about 22 at the minute and max i'v ever got is 30
-
At the mo its at 22 but thats cos i'm only using it in town occassionally. Last year on went to Norfolk got up to 40.
-
I had 129 MPG in my 8v. I was goin at 0
-
im loving the gti a bit to much i think ... the highest i got mine is 32.9
-
highest i ever got was 37.9,(8v 2.0)
-
Got 42mpg at 70mph constant for 1 hr, on way back, 60mpg constant got me 45mpg.
when i reset the MFA whilst cruising it shot to 90 something
-
how do you reset the mpg gauge?
-
hold the slidy "0 1 2" toggle thing to the left for a few secs whilst driving
resets the trip info
-
cheers timbo
-
had 4.2 mpg earlier today :undecided:
-
I still dont get this, i struggle to get over 27 and mines an 8v!
-
That is strange.
On the 8v i used to drive, an hour motorway trip at a constant 70 use to get me 47 +
-
47.2 MPG over 250 miles (Macclesfield to deepest darkest suffolk) in the pouring rain
-
i only get in the 20's around town aswell, mines a 2.0ltr 8v, is there something wrong?? or normal?
