hi. sat nav works by a minimum of 3 satelites locating you in relation to the rest of the earth. the satnav unit carries maps. using the 2 it knows where you are and it has the maps to get you to where you want to go.

i have a navman icn520 which is hetting a bit long in  the tooth but i like it s it is quite slim so stores away easily. you can pick these up for less than 100 quid now. the work van has a navman n20 i think and that is an entry level system which is easy to use.

i have some friends who use tomtom and they are a bit more expensive but do seem better and a bit easier to use.  if you are on a budget go for the n20. i think ebuyer are doing them pretty cheap at the minute. if you have a bit more cash to spend go for the tomtom.

I had a tom tom 500 till it got nicked....which was awsome!!!!

i bought the road angel as a replacement and it took about 5mins to load up (i timed it) it was rubbish!!!

Instead i bought the Tom tom one!!!! EXCELLENT and fits in your pocket like a wallet so you take it anywhere with you. It also tells you the speed limit in every area!!!

Go tom tom and never look back!!!!

I borrowed a friends TomTomOne when I drove down to Newquay and thought it was fantastic. I liked the way it tells you what the speed limit is on the road you are driving on.

If you look on http://www.tomtom.com/products/category.php?ID=0&Language=1 it tells you the differences. I have a 910 and think it is superb if a bit on the bulky size - you can't exactly put it in your pocket!

i see the 510 710 910 are all similar, the higher ones have more maps of us and few other things but i could not see why the "one europe" model was £80 less ? than the 510 model, maybe its got some extras i missed will have to compare them again

910 is hard drive based not memory cards (space for mp3's etc if you want to) has maps of europe and the US, plus has some funky speech engine so it can read out all the road names.

A-Z for local use and a Big AA road map for further afield

then if all else fails multi map on tinterweb and print directions

the art of map reading is becoming a lost art , keep it alive

You can put any map you want on the Tomtom One UK, but you will have to get a bigger SD memory card to fit extra ones on.

I can give you links to every map in the world that will go on the TT1, plus a keygen to activate the maps.

I've got the Navman F20.
I did a little looking around and found a decent price on it, so went for that. I don't use it all the time, so didn't see the point spending too much money. It has a memory card slot so you can load the maps for Europe, etc if you take it abroad.
It also has the option to show you points of interest on the map like hotels, cash points, stations and by default it will always show petrol stations and car parks, it even has two special buttons which when pressed will give you a route to the nearest Petrol station or car park.
Also it will give you a count down and warning for speed cameras (the fixed ones) and will warn you if you go over 72mph, but it doesn't tell you what the speed limit of the road is.
All that said, it's pretty good for £120ish.

haha!!! i have a friend just like you! he hates satnav and swears by maps. the trouble it it gets a bit expensive and orkward to store an a to z of every town you wish to go to, plus how can you map read whilst driving! lets face it, ib most city centres you cant really pull over and check the map! sat nav does have its downsides sometimes and yes maps are useful but satnav is so simple

I was like that. I do prefer maps, and I like to know where I'm going and what to expect. But my other half doesn't drive, and she's not very good at map reading, so it's easier to have the sat nav.
The other clincher was that we were moving to an area we didn't know at all, so it has been useful to find routes to places.

Multi map the route , then i usually "pace note" my directions

 like M6 J12 >

      O (thats a roundabout) 3rd exit
    > a5748 or whatever towards

you can easily drive anywhere like that , then when you get close , pull over multi map directions then ya there easy

im anti sat nav , i know people that dont go out of town that have them

Just to throw a spanner in the works, my rents went round europe with a garmin nuvi but I dont know which one. It's got a sd card reader, touch screen photo viewer, mp3 player and bluetooth so you can rig your phone through it. They aren't tech wizards and they had no problems with it so must be easy to use too

Yes, but is that Garmin any good? It's all good being £107, but its pants, then there is no point. I have used some real shocking sat navs before where they expect you to be a rocket scientist just to work out how to programe where you want to go in.

That's exactly how I get around - look up my route on a map and then write big clear directions on a sheet of paper that I sit next to me so I can glance at it to check the next turning/exit

I do have a TomTom 500 however, it was bought for me, mainly useful for speed camera warnings. That was until it killed itself RIP (it wasn't even a year old, not very impressed)
