Title: Tow bar options please..
Post by: jeff_hooper on 22 July 2007, 17:24
Hi,

I would like some input on my options in fitting a tow bar to a late Mk2 8v Big bumper.. From having a look around online the big bumper appears to be a bit of a problem..

Any experience ideas make/models please.

Jeff

i had an 8v with a towbar and they had to cut the bumper to get it to fit, my 16v also had a towbar at somepoint and the bumper had been cut on that as well

Try talking to either VW themselves or a towbar/trailer specialist as they will have an idea if you can fit a towbar that hooks under the big bumper and is secured behind it without cutting into the bumper itself.

My old Mk2 had a towbar that was fitted in a U-shape under the bumper and secured to a steel beam behind the bumper, but this was with small bumpers. I suspect if you did it under the very bottom of a big bumper it might be too low and give you ground clearance problems.
You might though be able to get a removable one that attaches discreetly leaving the back of the car looking clean when you don't want it.

Try towsure... they have some stuff, pretty cheap if i remember right?! Also, for small bumpers you dont have to cut the bumper, for big bumpers you do. You can get a replacement small bumper with towbar, and simply swap the back bumper when you want to use it? Fine if rarely used, but not if used regularly!

Reverse problem to yours, my big bumper model came with a towbar when I bought it, the thing appears to be a genuine VW towbar system as the actual 'hook' is integrated into the bumper iron.

It would appear, (and from comments about removing this previously posted on here) that an option is to purchase a bumper iron (separate to the big bumper plastic) with the towbar and replace with the existing one.  You will still need a small hole cut into the big bumpers sadly.  If I removed mine I would have this gap, although not as blatant a hole as with other non VW towbars, still a hole.

You cold try ebay for bumper irons or ask on here?  FYI there is not electrical fitting with the system I have.  I am content to leave mine on as a parking aid to those who can't park easily!!!
