else had this issue fitting the k&n filter on the mk3 gti 16v, on my vr6 it came straight off and in didnt have all these extra wires air tubes, but my 16v got loads of extra pipes a bigger one at top one to right connecting to engine and 2 tiny 4 mm ones anyway i had to detach all these and the 2 plugs and took top of airbox out, put filter in and know matter how hard i tried i couldnt get the edge of the top of back box to slot back in you know the 2 prongs that go in on far left dont help you cant see and goes under the wing any way i ended up taking of the hole box and trying it while it was out, it turns out it doesnt fit that well,
well it fits in lenth and width but it sits slightly higher than paper element so i had to hook in top of airbox first and hold at 45 degrees then slot in air filter then almost force down box top then clips to clip top of airbox on it shuted ok but seam its a few mm to tall so was a tighter fit with clips so id never of got it in without removing it all, i then had to put whole box back in in one as cant get it in with it apart so them had to manover it in taking off loads of tubes, all i can say is what a nightmare i cant belive it was so much hassle i wasnt doin anything wrong and its the right part,
has anyone else had this issue you will get what i mean more if you have, i hope i put all of it back on ok im sur ei didnt but dunno if loose connections will afffect anything if unplug and replugged them in
never had all thi sf**cking hassle befor ei feel pissed off took well over an hour, all because it was to tall the rubber bit round edges, i dunno if it perfectly sealed at the back where groves slot in as was slightly forced to shut but looked ok to me

How about a picture of it in the engine bay.

cant see anything apart from engine bay with a pic, the bit where it stight fitting is onth efar left tucked under the wing but it did shut ok and seam tight just strained the joint but a few mm and clips only just shut

Should be 5min job or less, helps if you unscrew and unplug the large intake pipe. Also unplug the two vacuum pipes, engine breather hose and unplug the MAF sensor connector.
To put back in, slot the top of the air box in to the wing at an angle, there's two tabs that hooks into the bottom half. Just push in from each corner and lock on the latches.
