Title: sorry if this sounds dumb when i done a wheel spin, not burnout
Post by: Britman on 21 July 2007, 03:11
i thought id try one as its raining and wanted to see how long it span for in 1st and second to test its traction, i held it for about 10 secs in 2nd at 6000revs in the rain it smelt as  is this just the tyres? as when i got back it stinks still does the fumes get into the engine bay and linger or is it clutch smell as i swear tyre smoke dont usully linger, it smells still what does the clutch smell  like i dont see how in can be as i wasnt even on the clutch while wheel spinning, my other cars didnt smell like that, but cant say i wheel spin much if ever, help please hope my clutch wasnt burning as its still smells from rad and around engine 30 mins later

maybe traction control was trying to kick in and the ABS and it was trying to put your front brakes on at the same time? When i left the handbrake on and set off driving once the rears really smelt for a while

well it drives ok but still smells that horrible burnt smell its not smoking or nothing just smells a lot and it is there after a drive hopefully it will go as its making me cringe that smell its horrid an dcan smell it in the air, hope nothings going to pack up now it not as if i ragged it or drive fast much only did it a few times
if you catch clutch while reving can it smell for ages i cant say i remeber doing that but maybe thats why smells, not had this before on my other cars

not sure how do you tell, its quite basic i.e poor seat adjustment no air con climate etc so doubt it, maybe nth eclutch is on its way out does it smell before it goes can they go at 145k, i know the let go at different times,

does my engine need beading in as it had done no milage before i got it, since having new cylinder head valves de coke etc

If the engine had no mileage when you got it, a burnout is about the worst possible thing to do. It's recommended that you take it easy for a thousand miles or so.

When did it last have a clutch fitted? Doing burnouts shoudnt really affect the clutch, but its possible that because you revved it so high then the clutch didnt get a chance to bite properly and was slipping. I'm just brainstorming though. A clutch smell wouldnt usually hang around that long

th eengin eisnt new its just had new cyinder head and valves and a head is it bad reving its then as i thought only new engines needed running in, think it done about 20 miles on new bit since ive got it, ive been driving normalyy but have floored it to 6000 rev sometomes through the gears, will i be causeing thing to scorch inside by doing this

dunno what the smell is but its there now all the time after a drive smell like the cluches smell to me like when granny ride it gettin out of a parking space, it seam sto be falling to bit, my audi a4 t sport was great no faults and had 163k, all cars are a gamble though, maybe its due a clutch

You sound suprised?

You know when it's your clutch because it just smells VILE  Happened to us once when we were helping some old bloke get his campervan out a ditch. The clutch didn't make it

but ive not had one go before which is lucky so is it going to fail then do you think it it smells like

allthe time after a drive as it feels ok, dont slip it does clunk slightly when i reversed into a space when i lifted to bitting point to move it just using clutch and bit of gas but may be same on most cars i dunno what to do now il see if it get any worse i spose but the smells like nothin else and makes me feel

looks so funny that emotion

Its done how many miles since the top end was done  and you done what
It sounds like the clutch, the smell will go after a while or after a long motorway drive, but it could be the smell of new gaskets etc from the rebuild, I suggested now that you change the oil and filter, if any bits have kicked off you don't want them getting in the way of the good oil that might be left  :undecided:
You really should take more care of it, these cars are solid and give us alot of fun, but how much longer do you want to keep on having it?
Hopefully no damaged was done, I don't suppose it would have, at least you not tracked it straight after the rebuild  But the engine in the first few mins from cold can get severly damaged with use like that, if the engine is working hard at high revs the pistons will feel all the work especially with a change up during high revs, the clutch is designed to take some of the torque away to avoid damage, but it can only do so much before sustaining damage itself.
CRAZY

spinning the wheels wont tell you how much power it has! Spend 40 odd quid and put it in on a rolling road. and dont say you cant afford it coz the damage you have probably caused is gonna cost ya a lot more than 40 quid.

why are you being like that, its not as if i do them all the time, infact NEVER, apart from a few known again in some cars ive had it not as if am a burnout king i didnt 1 tiny burnout and asked for some advice what the problem might be and if it was the clutch smelling

iwas only asking if it wrecks the clutch, my mechanic said it may be on its way out anyway so proberly not my fault as only spun the the wheels in the wet in first and second, i didnt expect such hostile replies i know it is stupid but was only asking, id under stand if i did them all the time and big ones for ages
i didnt think smalll wheel spins while on the power done damage as see people do them all the time, i expect its from me  spining in first then chaging to second and catching it a bit, its proberly burning the dust left from it

im anti burnout as respect my car but didnt think odd one would hurt it guess i was wrong

no offence

if you have damaged something serves you right

Yea, its sounds like you need to grow up or get a different car mate.

Also, what ever happened to commas, fullstops, question marks, capital letters etc?

Its hard to follow your thread without these.

I will be giving you a test next week, so get revising your english grammar.

whats the problem, i did onewheel spin why do i need to grow up? when did i say i burnout all the time? I dont recall saying that cant we just leave it now I cant belive many lectures ive got as if i do burnouts all the time, all i did was spun the wheels in first and second to see how far i could push it before traction was lost i respect cars  i think its been taken out of context, and I know my spelling grammer isnt perfect as i have an illness so am poor at concentration on pc and studying etc and get very tired, but ok at repetitive tasks like driving etc as its moving object its hard to explain so wont go into it, thank for telling me, I will go over my comments with a fine tooth comb next time didnt realise  it had to be so formal

also are you all telling me you all have never done a wheel spin once or a few times over the years or from losing traction, I find it hard to belive its easy to lose traction in rain and spin the wheels in first and second all i did was keep it spinning  for a few seconds till it regained traction, i only ever asked as its smelt a bit (the clutch) which has now gone
my last car had great traction a audi a4 t sport so it didnt wheel spin as easily, all i ever did was it as only got it a while ago
I didnt expect applaudes and cheers for doing it i know its bad for cars, I asked about the smell in the first place youve got me all wrong bout not repecting car and burnouts etc, i f iwa slike that id just say a sthere enough people about like that in my county
I cant belive the stick ive got of this bet you think acual people who do wheel spin/burnout all time are

Calm down, calm down.

Only joking mate. Do what you want with your car.

Glad your smell has gone.

Be good.

Over and out.

If you had any idea how much damage that can do to your car you would not do burnouts!!

It kills the clutch, gear box, drive shaft... All sorts,  it realy is NOT good for a car.

Not jumping on the bandwagon of "burnouts - bad idea" (which they are).
But I think you should qualify what you actually did.

It sound's like what you did was equivalent of spinning the wheels when pulling off from traffic lights too quickly when wet, which I'm sure we've all done, I certain have.
I don't think you'd be dumb enough to go on a "cruze" and do burnouts with the hand-brake on revving the nuts off the poor car, leaving rubber trails all over the McD's car park, because that would be stupid.

If your car had serious work done to the head just before you got it, you should certainly let it bed in for the first 1000miles, no high revs till it's warm and don't thrash it, the previous owner should have told you that.

Anyway, glad the smell has gone now.
