Getting a Lupo GTI tomorrow - 54 plate, 1 owner, silver, 26k miles, only one in the country with climate control... its for the wife of course    But she's going to Jordan for a year in 4 weeks time    so i'll have to keep it running on occasion. I'm sure it'll look nice next to the Edition 30 arriving in October. Pics soon.

Nice work that man
The wife had one of those and yes, it is a lovely little car. Same colour as you are getting too. it got more looks than the MKIV GTTDI I had at the same time :embarassed:

Sounds great.
Hope you enjoy and your wife enjoy it.
Pics please!

Sounds a nice car Illyum, but begs the question why, if she's of for a year, have you bought her a car

Yeah right, good excuse - we know its for yourself really?! They must be pretty nifty. Whats the spec on these cars like?

6 speed gearbox
125bhp
weighs less than a tonne
Aluminium wing for better weight distribution
Twin centre exhaust
0-60 in less than 8 secs
And I can say from experience that it goes like stink and handles brilliantly.

Certainly goes like stink and I think I have picked up my first 3-points today in the bl00dy thing after 5 years of driving like a mad-man... was doing about 83 on the A14 towards Ipswich when I saw a police car hiding on the opposite side looking for speeding drivers and I thought it quite unusual as I have driven on the A14 too many times to remember and never seen any police cars with cameras... anyway, I thought that there might be another waiting on my side and then 5 minutes later forgot about it. Imagine my shock when I turned a corner to find a smiling policeman in a parking layby with a colleague and a camera pointing in my direction. I braked hard but was doing anything between 75 to 80 so I'm going to have to wait for 2 weeks in case a get a letter... Can't believe my luck has held out so long though despite owning and driving some much faster cars - like the Golf R32... :embarassed:

Just say the wife was driving :D

Just say the wife was driving :D
Thats the worst part - she was until about 10 minutes before that but the baby woke up and starting crying and didn't take too kindly to me trying to calm her down. So I took over from my wife

Here's hoping that they got one of their many "ERROR" codes. Do you know if it was a handheld or a floor/back of car mounted camera?
If it was a handheld you may just be lucky

Well I'm hoping - it was a handheld by the way. But I fear my luck may have finally run out

If it was a handheld then I thought they had to stop you! Usually there is another plod car further up the road and they are the ones that stop you for being caught by the handheld. Maybe they have moved on from this and now the handheld also takes a picture? Anyone else know?
The other thing is if you carried on braking once you saw them until you were within the legal limit you may still get away with it as they have to have a constant reading!
Just trying to cheer you up a bit Illyun

Hmm... just went on ukspeedtraps and read that if you were caught on a handheld camera then they send you a ticket within 14 days. I'm sure that what that policeman had in his hand was a camera as it seemed to have a big lens type tube thing  and he was looking into it... oh well - its the 14 day wait for me then.

If it is soley a hand held, without any kind of photo or video recording attachment, then they are supposed to stop you at the time the offence was committed. They do have some "get-out" clauses, like you fcuked off and evaded being stopped! If it was a solitary plod, then if they didn't stop you, and it wasn't recorded, you will get away with it. However, if there were two plods (one who can verify the "opinion" of the other plod that you were speeding), they may still nick you via a NIP. If that were the case, I would personally ask for "full disclosure" of all documents!
Hurdy is right, though, regarding say one plod in a layby/bridge etc and pinging cars with the hand-held, and radioing to a second plod further down the road to stop you. In that instance, if you dispute the "allegation", you can demand to see the speed recorded on the display of the laser gun. If they refuse, or there is "considerable" delay (ie, they are trying to tag another motorist, and stitch you up with their speed), again, dispute it, and make sure you give your reasons/concerns after the caution, and more importantly, demand they write down your concerns on the ticket, BEFORE you sign for it.
The other thing is if you carried on braking once you saw them until you were within the legal limit you may still get away with it as they have to have a constant reading!
Yebut . . . if it was a laser gun (which is standard issue these days), rather than the old skool radar guns, the device will get a speed reading in about a one-hundredth (0.01) of a second. That is why laser detectors are useless, as they merely give you notification that you have been pinged.
Regarding the "constant" speed issue, they don't need a "constant" speed for any kind of hand-held, or road compression tube types of speed detection device. The constant speed was a throw back from days of old, when the copper would just use his Mk1 eyeball, and visually assess the speed of a vehicle without any kind of measuring device. This was then used on the VASCAR system - which is basically a glorified stopwatch and calculator, and requires extremely profficient manual operation by the plod. :nerd:

All hand helds have a "lens type" thingy - it's called a "viewfinder". :nerd: If what you saw was fairly narrow in diameter, say half to 3/4 of an inch, then that will simply be the viewfinder. However, if it was noticeably larger, say 1½ inches or greater, then there is a high probablilty that it was linked to a stills or video recording device - so look out for mister postman. Don't get confused with the actual lenses for the actual laser transmitter and collector, as there are usually two identical, probably about 1" dia, either side-by-side, or one above the other. One lens transmits the laser beam, and the other collects the reflection. :nerd:
