Hi guys,
How do I know when my gearbox is going out the window. I have the following symptoms.
When I depress the clutch I hear a sort of wobbly winding noise. Not very loud but its there.
The gears aren't grinding and the clutch is not slipping.
I was wondering if this could just be the releaser bearing or the thrust plate.
Yesterday whilst driving to work I changed into fourth gear and the car mad a huge noise as well the shook as if I hit something on the road. But I didn't. I am not sure if this is related to the gearbox or its just coincidental.
Any help from the GTi gods would be appreciated.

Might be just the thrust bearing. But as you gotta split the box from engine to replace it, its usually only done with a new clutch.
But as you say thats not slipping then maybe worth waiting a bit longer?
As for the 4th gear crutch, if that was a one off then you'll have to see if it happens again.

len the thrust bearing on these is fitted behind the green cover on the side of the box (on the 020 cable box anyhow) and dosen't need the box spliting. and I would guess the problem could be on the self adjuster on the cable or possibly the ratchet on the clutch arm (you will know if this goes as he pedal drops to the floor!) and it could cause the noise as the clutch isn't releasing correctly

I did think that but really what I meant was that normally you dont want to renew them seperately! sorry didnt explain myself properly! :embarassed:
