Can anyone explain the following problems I have getting into first.
Goes into first every time with engine running, car stationary.
Won't go into first when car is moving (with clutch in obviously)
I figure its a worn 1st gear synchro. Any other offers?
If you are just about to reply "linkage bushings" or "adjustment" then I suggest you need to read the above again.
Hope someone can clear this up.
Pete.

i think the idea of making it hard to get into first gear when moving is to prevent you from, say, dropping from 4th into 1st - its sorta like a fail safe i think
mine does exactly the same, as did my corsa before
-
yeah i got the same thing with my 1st gear
I f**kIN HATE THE SECOND GEAR CRUSH ASWEL!
-
Hi, my 1'st goes in fine when cold, but when warm it is really hard to get in if it been in neutral, I put it in to 3'rd then it goes in to 1'st smoothly. If I change strait to 1'st from 2'nd when stoping it goes in smoothly as well. No one has been able to explain what the problem is.
-
Mate, I am having problems that sound very similar to yours with my Mk3 Gti. See.....
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=8;action=display;threadid=6242
Could be the same?
-
Sounds a bit weird but plausible. It's only hard to put in 1st from neutral when warm, not from any other gear. I think its a lot of money to pay out on the chance that there is a crack in the gear box. Does any one else have any theoryies
-
Mine does the same as well-bit of a tw@t but if it really wont go in,ive just been puttin it into 2nd gear.Always seems to happen wen i hav alot of traffic behind us as well! >:(

Mines the same... mk3 GTI 8v.
just wont go into 1st when moving... unless u force it and then it crunches and sounds awful!
-
Blimey, what have I started?
Sounds the same as yours black_gti, I can get it into first whilst moving if I ram it but it doesn't sound nice.
And I'm not talking moving fast either, speeds that I think it should go into first easy.
Mines a mk1 though, bound to be some crunching on a 21year old gearbox!
Have heard about problems with clutch not disengaging properly. If gears change fine with engine off and crap with engine on then could be clutch. However thats not my symptoms.
I might try a general car forum, I figure this is a general gearbox problem, maybe not limited to VWs.
maybe a Ford Cortina forum?

did nobody actually bother to read what i said then??
Blue Mk2:- have you got a weighted shift rod (of a mk3) on your's it seriously dampens down the 2nd gear crunch
-
Yeah, something nuts about Corsas
Heh heh.
Peter.
-
Both of mine dont like first gear unless they are stationary, or near to it.
-
Gettin in ne gear would be a plus :D
Must get her sorted but I'm use to it now. Makes it funny wen I get in2 the mk2 he he!!
-
did nobody actually bother to read what i said then??
Yes,a fail safe, but everyones just sayin that it happens to them.Plus mine doesn happen wen i go form 4th to 1st,cos i daint do that,i'm talkin about wen approachin a roundabout, slowing down, dropping from say fourth to second, then tryin to get it into first wen i hav to stop.
As for the clutch not disengagin properly, happens on my b/fs escort, only the car starts to judder, until u put the car in neutral-is that wht happens to urs?,cos thats not wht happens to mine! :-\

INFO FOR BOYISH RACERS 8)
The real cause is bent selector forks. These are damaged when people
try to force the gearbox into 1st gear before it's ready to go... This
excessive force bends the selector forks and causes it to be out of alignment.
The gearbox has to be stripped down to repair and is therefore expensive.
Don't force your gearbox into first at higher revs. Not only do you risk
causing this problem, you also cause excessive wear of the Synchromesh.
Learn to double clutch, or rev the engine before engaging first to match
(synchronise) the gear speed.
If you have a damaged gearbox there are a few tricks to let you live with this
problem until your ready to repair it, when the rest of the gearbox is worn out
or you have the funds for repair.
The best way is to select first gear just before you come to a stop,
just before your wheels stop turning. What's happening here?, The gears and
synchromesh are still turning and even with bent selector forks, the gearbox
will line up the gears, while it's turning, so it will slip straight into 1st. If
you allow the car to stop before you select 1st, then there's only a 20 percent
chance the gears will be lined up. This is why when you let the clutch out again,
or select another gear before putting it into first, it sometimes helps it go into
gear. Of course, it means you have to keep the clutch in while waiting at the
lights, otherwise you have to put the clutch in a few times until it synchronises.

mk1 gti16v cab & sweet gearbox ;D

put in fully synthetic oil in mine and seems a lot better a cheap and effective mod :)
-
whats double clutch exactly? ::)
(not a boy racer)
-
double clutching is when you change gears (downshifting) in two stages rather than one.
Instead of putting the clutch in, shifting, and letting it out again you:
* Clutch in, shift to neutral, clutch out
* Blip the throttle to rev to the rpm the engine will be doing in the gear you're about to change to
* clutch in again
* Shift to the gear you want
* clutch out
-
ill probably loose a race trying to remember al that ::)
-
Double Clutching actually does a few things
1: Makes ya clutch/gearbox last longer
2: Makes U drive faster
3: Makes U concentrate lol....
-
Thanks ashmk1 for replying with some useful info.
Doubling the clutch doesnt work on mine. definitley have to be stopped and it slides right in.
Ho hum.

I have to be stopped before I can select 1st gear, but after 25mins of driving I am able to select first No prob.
I think it is the gear linkage bushes
As I also have problems selecting reverse, as to get my reverse lights on I have to select reverse then pull the stick back ???
