Title: CAT heat shield
Post by: 8vgti on 19 February 2004, 11:05
Does anyone know if the heat shield on the cat aids the heating process or is just there to prevent any damage occurring should you do a bit of off-roading? The reason I ask is because it rattles now and I am debating taking it off. i have welded it twice now but the weld breaks over time and I have also attached large jubilee clips, but again over time they break. Any help appreciated to stop it sounding rough as hell!!

My Gti 8V used to have a rattley heat shield too, took it to a local fast fit place and they bent it up tight by hammering a chisel into it! Looked a bit drastic but it worked and has not rattled once since then (cat still works incidentally). Of course it does hep if you have a handy set of lifting ramps in your garage!

Cats are very fragile, so i advise that you don't remove the sheild.
Put loads of big jubilee clips around it, they should hold if you use a few.

I've had mine fixed back about 5 times - each time it lasts for a couple of months and then it comes loose again.  A right royal pain in the a*se.  Might try the jubilee clip route.

Cheers

I got Bell tyre (swindon) to attach (and supply) the jubilee clips, which they did for ?5. Not sure where to get the clips from though, may be worth a look at Halfords or Partco. The clips on mine are not jubilee clips in the true sense...more like metal grip ties if that makes sense??

I got some giant jubilee clips from a wholesale cleaning warehouse.

Bolt at front of cat shield is often missing on these cars! Its vibrates undone over the miles. The shield is still well secured with out it but not many people realise there is a tiny nut the other side of the shied between the shield and the cat. With out the bolt this rattles and vibrates like mad. Bend the shield out abit get it the nut out and bend it back and you generally notice a big difference!!!
