I am actually taking mine to a dealers this Thursday to have it looked at after I compared the noise of my engine to ROB-MRK5's... mine was a bit noisier on idle... starting to sound like my vRS PD 130 diesel engine
Mind you, the noise disappears when you floor it!

....Diesel engines are too heavy and expensive to manufacture in the long term. Also, they aren't exactly environmentally friendly either. Diesel will disappear when petrol does, I reckon.

They arent enviromentley friendley. Yet when it comes to tax my diesel its alot less to pay in tax than the gti petrol.

Cass mate.... at my (our) age you can't be too choosy !!!  Most come with a white stick. At least they can't run away too fast. Still the GTI out paces the wheelchairs and shopping baskets....and if I pull up at bus stops they have a tough decision as to whether to jump in or use their free bus passes.

....but the Laser blue passion wagon is a good talking point babe magnet  !!!

I wouldn't let it worry you.

She was probably told by a previous boyfriend (who was stuck with a diesel company car) that diesels were faster nowadays.  (they usually are faster than the equiv petrol version in most model ranges)

I'd take it as a complement, she probably liked the car.

I took mine in to a dealer today because I thought it was too noisey after comparing to ROB-MRK5... turns out it needs a new "valve" (not sure which one: part number:08A130757C plus it also needs an ECU update) - will get this done soon as possivble and then hopefully back to a slightly less noisey engine!

Update on this for those who also think their engine maybe a bit on the "diesel sounding side".

My car is currently at Heritage VW in Bristol, they are keeping it for three days to investigate the excessive engine noise, this is after I took it in a couple of weeks ago for them to have a quick review of the noise based on findings of a VW garage up in Liverpool who said it needed a valve replaced (which actually turned out to be a red herring).  Apparently they had another one in at the same time for the same sort of thing, but my noise was of a slightly deeper timbre...

Apparently over the three days they are planning to strip the engine and isolate the cause of the sound... then I will need to take it back in to get sorted... joy of joys!  Still at the moment it is driving me mad and ruining my enjoyment of the car so I will be happier when sorted.

At the moment I have a great (not) Polo 1.2E as a courtesy car... goes like... stink *ahem*

So, if you think your GTi is noisier than it should be, make sure you take it in...

I am actually taking mine to a dealers this Thursday to have it looked at after I compared the noise of my engine to ROB-MRK5's... mine was a bit noisier on idle... starting to sound like my vRS PD 130 diesel engine
Mind you, the noise disappears when you floor it!

Hmmm... interesting afternoon!  Just got a message from the very good service girl at my dealer... my car needs a new engine!!!!  It has only done 27k miles

Got to call her back tomorrow now...  I nearly had a heart attack until she mentioned at the end of the message that it would all be covered under warranty! Praise the lord for that!!!!!!!!!!  I might have cried otherwise!!!

Scary stuff though.

I have to say, I am very happy with the service from Heritage VW in Bristol so far!!

Didn't actually speak to the girl, I missed her call and she left a message.  No mention of what was worng, just that I had a "noisy" one... will speak to her tomorrow and get the lowdown.. she advised that it should be done by next wednesday!  That's great service if it happens!

P.S. The idea with the ED30 engine is genius... i will see if Ii can wangle it
P.P.S. Just noticed what car you have, nice... I had a Fabia vRS before the GTi... the PD130 Engine is superb... bit noisey but just pulls and pulls... the vRS was a great car... managed to surprise quite a few cars once I had it in 3rd gear upwards!

cheers.  its a work in progress at the moment; hoping to get it remapped soon   but even in standard form it will waste a few so-called hot hatches

yep - I can imagine it certainly would... really useful amounts of torque... before deciding to treat myself, blow my budget and get the GTi I did consider a remap for the vRS....   with diesel's it's all about the most useful real world performance through the gears...

I only really changed the car because I stopped having a 90mile commute and just fancied something a bit more leery

.........head pinned back into the headrest and a  desperate plea to slow down...

Our lovemaking techniques are very similar.........

For my money, the GTI has always sounded like a diesel at tickover.
Sat in traffic yesterday with no aircon or fan on, and in neutral, it sounded quite rough.
Better let the dealer take a look....

Well, new engine should be fitted and car ready for pick up next Thursday!!  Apparently the technician stripped the engine right down and the excessive noise was still there, so no alternative but to swap it out!
TBH I am very happy with this outcome, effectively my car is given a complete new lease of life... wonder what they do with the mileage reading... hmmm...

they fitting the ED30 engine though?

Mileage would stay the same i would have thought; would be noted in the log book about the engine replacement

Well, finally got my car back avec new engine... have to say the difference is DRAMATIC... no longer sounds like a tractor!  Still the faint tappity sound (which I have been advised is from the injectors) but this dissapears with the slightest touch of the accelerator... as opposed to juts getting a bit noisier!  Very happy with the car now.

Didn't get any specific running in advice, can I assume keep it under 40 on the rev counter for the first 500 or so miles?  On the drive back from the garage I kept it under 3500 revs just to be on the safe side...

Dealer also fitted 3 brand new alloys to my car due to the dreaded corrosion... the other one was too badly kerbed to be done under warranty....

I will post a sound file with the "before" sound and "after" sound for anyone interested

I think they should be banned... I can't believe the amount of black soot that comes out of the back of a diesel evhicle, esp if they are rev'd a bit.  I've had one too many lung-fuls of soot driving behind one of these things... awful isn't the word.

Yeah - have to say I am very happy with the outcome... Heritage of Bristol was my dealer and although they were a bit hit and miss with regards to communications whilst doing the work I have to say I am overall very happy with their service.  No questions on replacing the alloys (which I have to say only had very minimal corrosion) and assertive in getting the new engine fitted... especially when you hear of others being fobbed of with its "meant to be like that".

Sounds spot on now

Title: RUNNING IN...
Post by: NORTHERNER on 24 August 2007, 11:21
Interested on finding information about running-in period for new engine... found a post by Teutonic Tamer who suggested a gradual approach of stepping up max revs gradually over first 1200 miles... thinking of doing the following:

New Engine fitted at: 27,354
No more than 3,500RPM until approx 27,754 (400 miles done) - this is what I am doing at the moment.
No more than 4,500RPM until approx 28,154 (800 miles done)
No more than 5,500RPM until approx 28,554 (1200 miles done)
After 28,554 – drive normally

Obviously only hitting the max revs when teh car is fully warmed up!

Any comments (besides the fact that I am probably an anal retentive!!)
