zoe, if its rich then the carb needs setting up, i would take off the airbox etc first and give the carb a really good spraying with some carb and choke cleaner first... if this doesnt work then get it set up on a gas analyser

no worries... p.s when you have used the carb and choke cleaner (and do use plenty all round the carb throat and open the butterfly too) dont worry if the engine doesnt start first time and then throws loads of black sh!t out the zorst... thats a good sign!

have a read thru my pierburg 2e2 FAQ before you fiddle with any of the carb settings, they are very sensitive and you should only adjust anyhting as a last resort.  There are many things that can go wrong on these things which cause rich running :)

sorry the pierburg 2e2 is the type of carb fitted to 1.6 and 1.8 carb engined MK2s, it is possible you've had a webber fitted instead, do you have a choke cable? If not its a 2e2, if you do its probably a webber. Heres a link to my FAQ:

if you have a choke cable its probably had a webber carb fitted, in that case its a very simple unit and dead easy to tune :)
