Bit of a shock today. I checked the oil and found only a tiny bit on the bottom of the dipstick :embarassed:
Does anyone know the correct oil to use to top it up? The manual's as clear as mud and gives a VW spec for the oil. I assume it's fully synthetic, but what grade?
Cheers

504 00. AKA Castrol Edge. :nerd:

On this note. Did you unscrew your cap? Mine seems to have some sort of vacuum thing going on - take the cap off and the oil sinks to the sump (even after being standing for 2 days).
Going further off topic I cant read my dipstick very well. Minimum and maximum are covered in oil but there is a bit in between those 2 which doesnt seem to have any oil on it

Can't see how there would be a vacuum as the dipstick hole isn't air tight anyway!?!
I'm assuming that you wipe the dipstick and then re-insert it, pull it back out and then read the oil level?

Yep I do this a few times  There is always abit that the oil doesnt seem to touch so it's hard to tell if you've under or overfilled :undecided:

Brilliant, thanks. Hopefully they'll have some at the Shell garage... I have a feeling of being ripped off at Halfrauds, even if I don't buy anything

its castrol, not shell! 1 litre cost £14.99 from Halfrauds

Yeah, Like a tw4t I thought you could get Castrol oil from all half-decent garages... I ended up in Halfrauds in the end. The litre cost £13.99.

I got mine from the parts counter at my local VW, £12 for a litre.

I wouldn't put anything in mine except the longlife stuff the stealers sell.

Yep checked mine yesterday, 12500miles and needed 1/4 litre of 504.00 spec Castrol edge.
Only had car 5 weeks, bought with 11K on clock at year old and noticed at first that exhuast tips where black at base after each drive, they are now cleaning up as I do long trips of 80 miles/day. Lad at work followed me last week and said there was a puff of blackish smoke for a moment when initially accelerating...anyone else noticed this. Could just be to do with lots of short journey's by last owner.
Car goes in for leather cover to be changed on the 31/07 and have asked garage to through computer service, they said they would only service if needed! believe it or not, I wanted it done to be safe.
P.S. car runs fine and has just had the engine managment up date.

yes, mine always does spirt out some black smoke on hard accelaration, only for a split second, tends to be more if youve driven for lots of miles at slow speeds, just normal, nowt to worry about. It makes peeps think your driving a diesel ,and they think , :smug: that poor guy has only a slow diesel car, but oh sh!t, by god it's gone!!!!!!
-
Wonder what causes it??
-
lots of factors ,well normally black smoke in a petrol car is unburnt fuel, maybe the time is takes the ecu to understand where youve put your right foot, the load thats put on the car depending on whether your going uphill at the time,or maybe because often what you do subconcously do is "lift off" the accelator, which would again overfuel it for a split second. thus giving some black smoke.
-
I am led to believe that the detergent properties of modern unleaded fuels also contribute to the black tail pipes whilst they are shifting crud from inside your engine! I am sure someone will correct me if this is wrong :undecided:
-
Thing is... some diesleds go like stink!! My old Fabia vRS used to seriously shift... best gears weer 3rd, 4th and 5th... pulled superbly... mind you, even in sixth gear doing 80... car would stillpull amazingly if you put your foot down!
