My 1st post on here woohoo!
now down to business
bought a cheap ass mk2 a week back and soon after realised the stereo was as good as dead. i've been reading up on here for the sizes ill be needing,
Rears - 6" x 4"
Doors - 5"
Dash - 8/10"
im hoping thats right? if so what makes should i be looking at? i dont have the earth so spend so please bare that in mind. also any suggestions as to what models?
cheers
-
how far are you looking at going with it? just the speakers or adding amps and things?
any idea of total budget because this will determine what will be best for you?
-
just speakers not wanting to mess about with amps.
and bout £50-60, decided i'll only do the dash and rear speakers.
-
I have some Kenwood dash replacement speakers for a Mk2 somewhere you can buy off me for very little
-
razer have u got door pockets on ur car?? the speakers are 5.25 in those, i also have a set laying around at home
-
Yeah i do, its a GTi, but i've decided i'm not going to do the doors as i dont have much money and i want to get decent speakers.
-
to be honest and this is just my view, i would change the doors and the ones in the dash first, keep the sound where u are then replace rears at a later date??
-
i spose that would be a better option, but with the ones on the dash im know im going to have to take most of it apart and im afraid of breaking or snapping it will removing it then not being able to put it back
-
there not that bad to do, if u can find a screwdriver that either flexs, or i found a screw driver in halfords, it was an s shapes one with philips head on them, take ur time and there ok to do. there are 3 screws each side if i remember
-
ah ok, cheers
maybe i will look into then, but i still wanna get the rears replaced. could you suggest any make for them?
-
off top of my head i think rockford fosgate do them, alpine, jbl, thnk kenword might, im sure u could pick rears up quite cheap new from stereo places, u have a good place near the big superstore, on the old a33 i think
-
yer i just cant seem to find many places that actually do 6" x 4" speakers. seems they're rare
or at least where ever i've looked they've either had none or very few.
-
halfords stock a few, bought my rockfords off specialist.
have u thought abt ebay??
i might end up selling my old ones on there
-
dont wanna buy off ebay cos this sort of stuff could be easily stolen or just a complete fake.
and i went into halfords the other day to check, the didnt have any 6 x 4's, i even asked and they said they dont stoke them
-
oh right, im sure i have bought rears from there store in basingstoke, might be worth giving them a call and seeing??
im sure reading also has to car audio shops on one road, almost opposite elgar road south(gsf down there)

yeah me and most others would go with dubslug, do your speakers first and worry about everyone else later! you can always fade to the front if they distort. ive done mk3 dash spks with a small ratchet set with a quarter inch drive on the end and a screwdriver bit in the quarter inch, thats another option of how to do it. but it is fairly easy once you get the little 'clip off' screw covers off the speaker grill things you cant really go wrong.
mk4 or 5 escorts had 6x4s in, and they never sounded too bad, in which case a trip down the scrappy could get you some half decent ones! but the only aftermarket ones ive seen are the JBL ones in halfrauds.
-
bassjunkies do jbl 6x4s they sound quite nice, I have got those in the back and jbl power series in the dash, sounds very crisp just lacking in bass so looking at some infinity components for the doors (bargain £40 from ebay brand new from a well known audio company which has thier own website, they use ebay for thier clearance lines, probably to avoid tax etc lol)
-
cheers for that mate, i will look into them

If you are intent on not wanting an amp, then your best bet would definitely be some well fitted 5.25 co-ax door speakers. Have a look at this page - should be something in your price range:

I really wouldn't bother with the dash speakers. Although they'll lift the sound upwards, you'll get little if any bass from them.
