recently bought a 5 door 1987 golf 1.8 auto to get converted for my step dad, as he recently lost his leg in a work accident. Anyway, the rear driver's side door will not open from the inside or outside, just won't budge! How the fook can i get it open?! I can't get the interior panel off as there's four screws on the leading edge of the door! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

mine did this to me a few times, i had to wiggle the rear handle abt as much as i could and try it in all different places, it opened finally, i think i pushed the handle upwards as much as i could, hope this helps

why not look at local scarppers and find a replacement interior panel, then chop the old one out and do it like that, only be 5quid or so....
-
I had to cut the door handle  Done the job

Thanks for the help guys. I was considering cutting the interior panel, but it's an 86 GL and there ain't ANY in ANY breakers around here!!! May try cutting the handle then! Any more ideas greatly appreciated!

take the plastic or metal stirp off the handle,on the outside of car, there you'll find a screw phillips head quite short, play about with that, rock it about, up down.
Hopefully that'll flick the catch, you'll probabl find a little piec of metal has broken, it did on mine.
good luck.

Pull the door handle off the other side and have a look at the lock mechanism and how it operates. Then make up a slim jim to jemmy it open.

had a similar problem with mine, a piece of metal had broken off the outer handle and jammed the mechanism up, i played about with the handle and it eventually opened

try spraying wd40 into any gaps in around the handle and keep working the handle, mine then opened
