Title: Why did you get a golf???
Post by: fliptophead on 04 July 2007, 21:54
Not a question for anybody here as such... I know you all have discerning taste in your wheels!

I met a family do over the weekend for usual sort of grand gathering...

My brother in law and I play this sort of sick (and very expensive) game of surprising each other with new cars... ( I hasten to add he started it!)

So my last car was a 3.2V6 TT... which I didnt have that long ( about 7 months)...  and when I saw the Ed.30... I needed one... it was like the pied piper playing me a tune to buy it

When I turned up my brother in law, basically was a bit shocked... TT gone, Ed.30 in situ... and his first question apart from 'wow' was ... but its a golf... why a golf???
I replied with ... its a very fast golf... its a very comfortable golf... its a very well specced golf.... and I have to admit to being a total hot hatch fiend at heart.

He's managed to go from a Porsche boxter S, to a mini cooper S to spending an insane amount of money on a 'tick every box on the options chart' A4 quatro TDI....  ( nearly 35k's worth!)..  but he just couldnt grasp ' a golf '.

Has anybody else had similar questions.... 'why' ... 'but its a golf'  ...
I know lots of you out there have had some rather spectacular cars.

Just a Golf?   The Golf GTI was one of the iconic cars of the 20th Century!  Only a couple of years ago did it get voted in at No. 2 in Top Gear's Top 100 cars of the 20th and was only beaten by the £1million McLaren F1 Roadcar...  And don't even get me started on his choice of cars - either they are for the wrong sex, or they are boring - no cars mentioned A4 Audi TDI   25 million sold and counting... the third - or second best selling car in history... Give me a Golf GTI over a Mini Cooper S or  Audi A4 Diesel anyday. And as for the Porsche, if I was ever to buy one - and I have plans  - nothing but a 911 would suffice.  Rant over.

Its just a golf and a bloody expensive one at that.
I can understand were hes coming from i have a good mate who works for benfield who thinks the  same. He does like mk1 golfs though but thinks all the newer ones are overpriced euro boxes styled by VW and it shows. I can see his side of things, the golf has a 'peoples car badge' it was a mark that always went up against ford and vauxhalls so does not have a prestige badge or huge sporting heritage, Every other house wife has a golf of some description etc etc.

On this subject it appears that Illyun and myself have been "separated at birth"

I agree entirely with what he is saying and his possible future car too.

Some people just cannot get over someone spending close to £30k on a Golf. Some comments like "you could get a decent coupe for that" or "you could have bought a Beemer" spring to mind.

The ED30 suits my needs for now. I need a fast, comfortable, 5 door car that quickens the heart when you know you are about to drive it. :smug:

However, if both the wifee's and my parents weren't a factor.........the a W12 GTI? but VW would have to sort out it's saggy backside :undecided:

I'm pleased there's this reaction and it wasnt just my bro -in- law.

He's had all sorts ( elise,  2 x scoobie's, some sad merc of some description, Z3 ) and so on...  In about the last 10 years.
He also has a Leon Cupra R for his wife which is now ageing a little...

Yes... more money than sense.

I guess he's used to me having Sporty A3's and such...

As for the porsche thing... None of them float my boat...
And beemer's... ( baring in midn the 3 series out sold the Mondeo last year...) ... no thanks.
The 1 series is ugly and the rest are 'old mans' cars  ( I hate saloons )...

I test drove a *NEW* cooper S before I ordered the Ed30, just to be sure...  And it was fun, but I'd have sold it after a month becuase I would have lost my licence as I found the engine far to racy for its (and my) own good.

My wife is getting a mini one and that was actually much better... ( the suspension setup is actually better ) and the car actually feels more balanced.

I've had this a lot and it's beginning to annoy me !  When the car was just a few days old, many people said "why did you get that?  Just looks like a normal golf to me," i had to give a lecture about what the car is all about, why its such an amazing car etc etc - and after all that lecturing - "well why didn't you get something like a beemer?" (can relate to you totally Hurdy!)  Its clear these people know NOTTING about cars.  Now whenever they ask, I don't bother - just either laugh or give them a dirty look (depending on mood!)....and to be honest, it's one of the main reasons why i bought the car - it has all the performance, comfort, practically with a stealthy, low key look which doesn't grab (too much) attention.

Hurdy - read your post and seemed to me that you had 2 wives!!!  Began to feel really sorry for you!

when i was looking for a new car, i test drove an A3, a C-Class merc, 3 Series BMW and a GTI.

The GTI was by far the best and thats why i bought one!

I know its only a golf, but there are only a few around my kneck of the woods. And i have to say it gets some serious attention! People just cant take their eyes of the Red bit around the grill.

Students (both male and female), housewifes, workers, boyracers, old men, and young kids all admire my GTI.

Most people dont know what it is. They look in amazement. Thats what a GTI does!
The GTI is the GTI !

ITS ALL THINGS TO ALL MEN

Just a think about VW not being a prestige brand... ... Ok Polo's and stuff ... 10 a penny.

That has blured compelety now... Way too many beemers and audi's around.  Golf GTI's have become much more prestige as people with the cash to buy one have regularly bought A3's of some description.

I looked around the surrounding estate and stuff, and I see more Audi's and BMW's than Vw's by some margin...

I moved to the GTI simply because I loved the car... and the same spec on an A3 ( lets face it a VERY similar car) would cost at least 5k more, and with the proliferation of A3's around, I would suspect they wont hold their value anywhere near as much as the Ed30 will.

Hysterically, I just spoke to the Bro-in-law and he's about to order an RS4...  Clearly the TDI coal burner has lost its appeal.

Anyway... I knew that Clarkson geezer knew what he was talking about all along.... lol

I get so much pleasure driving mine, get so many onlookers, especially young blonde/brunnetts passing !!! its great!!, its most deffinatly the most gorgeous car ive ever owned and plan to keep for some time yet, to the fact ive just ordered some private plate costing me £500, but shes worth it, even the wife agreed and she gets as much enjoyment being seen in it as i do.
The car is iconic, nothing will change that, people that drive astra vxr's, focus ST's,honda civic's, just always to me look like some posessed child because they could quiet afford an extra few quid for a proper handling hot hatch!!.  just my opinion, but i know im right!

For me the Golf is greater than the sum of it's part's, in the sense that, for a hatchback it's a very grown up , very accomplished car, I also like it's almost classless value's.when compared to Porsches, Merc and BMW's.

Just thinking for the other side here but.
 How do you guys know what onlookers are thinking   . As an example people often look at modified noisy boy racer maxpower cars coming along the road the owners think people love them because they are getting looks when the onlookers 9/10 times are thinking look at that mess . Maybe some onlooks are also thinking something on the line He spent all that extra money on that, its just a golf

Theres so many mk5 GTIs round were i am now i miss most of them and if its black so the grill blends in i very rare notice them at all now. I have had one positive coment at the petrol station when i first got mine but now it seems to just blend into the background. When i bring the mk1 out though i nearly always get 'nice car mate' coments.

Thats exactly what I like about it, it is discreet.  Yet it is still a special car.  You only have to drive one to realise that.  It also has enough small details (honeycomb grill, skirts, flat bottom steering wheel...ect) to lift it from a run of the mill golf.

Personally, I had looked at the TT (not the new one), RX-8, 350Z as possible cars... out of them I chose the Golf GTi... it was just the best compromise between performance, practicility, affordability & quality...etc

Plus having come from a line of average cars (first car: Citroen AX GT, second car: Citroen Saxo VTR, third car: Skoda Fabia vRS (which actually was a much better than average car)) I have to say its a nice feeling being in the GTi!

... but now it seems to just blend into the background....

Its easy to tell. i get alot of people nodding they head at me not just golf owners. I found this strange at first but now im use to it. As im young most of the people who give me a nod are young boys and gals.

Also, as my car is black, the red bit around the grill stands out a mile away and this is what grabs the attention. When im in a que i get people staring at the car. Its not common at all in my end so its something that alot of people havent seen and kind of sticks out from the other cars. Most people stare at the grill and the red calipers. The sports recaro seats with the tarton patterns also attract some attention. Although its a golf, its a different class of golf!

During the night the dials and satnav unit light up the car beautifully and this is what attracts people.

When i go to my local kabab shop i park right outside the door and people always walk around it and check it out. They like looking at the interior.

I've had alot of people ask me where i got the steering wheel from. I tell them its standard and they say "really" in shock.

Hi all,
I currently have a BMW 320i sport as a company car. It was up for renewal and my choice was 325i sport. I was told my budget had been dropped to around the 20-22k mark. The only car in my opinion worth having for that sort of money is the Golf Gti. I sort of chose it out of anger and a black one for a black day  I have not test driven one or seen one close up apart from in photos (stupid I know). You guys on the forums have cheered up cos from what you all say its a cracking car! Hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised when it arrives tommorrow morning. My main areas of concern are the build quality and the handling. What has given me some exitment is the fact I can get it Revo'd  to around 260hp.

build quality = excellant
handling = beautiful (its a treat in the wet also and i havent driven many cars which can do 70mph around a bend and still stay glued to the road )

they can be revo'd all the way past 300bhp

Kidfrost, youmay be pleasently surprised, the golf might just put a bigger smile on your face then a common old bmw!, and abit faster, any idea on spec your getting?, Try DSG and see what you think.

I have just come to my GTI from BMW 1 Series.

I REALLY REALLY wanted a GTI in the summer 2005 when I got my 1 Series, but at the time there were no discounts and there was a 4 month wait for a factory order. So I got the 1 series becuase two years ago the 120d was a quite a powerful 2.0ltr diesel and It ended up that I was also going to have to change jobs with more miles, so it made sense. After 20 months of ownership It just had to go. The build quality was poor, it squeaked, creaked and it was just wearing bad. BMW recently have gone down hill in my opinion.

To replace it I looked at new 3 series coupe, Seat Leon Cupra, Audi TT, Octavia vRS, Renaultsport Clio, New Mini Cooper S and Golf GTI. None of them could really hold a candle to the GTI.

I seem to get alot of attention with my GTI, a couple times I have gone for fuel and "boy racers" have come over and given it a good look over and everyone seems to know what it is. If I told people I got a Octavia vRS, most people wouldnt know what it is, even if its a Golf GTI but cheaper. Oh, and for the record it might have the same engine and chassis but it is not in the same league as a complete package or as somthing good to drive, it feels abit detached in my opinion.

Its just got that something about it that appeals, I think Jermey Clarkson said it was "all things to all men" and I think it sum's it up well.

Mines in Silver and in my opinion, with the 18's it does look rather good. It stands out with the black of the skirts and the grill with the little bit of red lipstick.  People respect it as well, Ive had mine 13 weeks now and I have had no one try and over take or have a little race at the lights cos they know its bloody quick.

Mk1 or Mk5 its a classic - and thats why its sold so well

My answer:- I wanted a hot hatch after 18 months of diesel ownership and after doing some research on the web and in magazines, I found most, if not all, road tests/reviews say that although not the fastest, most extreme, best value, best equipped hot hatch, the golf is the best one to own on a daily basis. After a test drive I was hooked and since purchase I have only praise for the GTI. Long may it last........

I so hope you're right,, and Maxamus with the build quality and handling.
Spec is pretty basic,  Diamond Black, 18" Monza's, Mirror goes down when reversing pack, rear parking sensors.

Had mine nearly 5 weeks, I have said it before, this is the only car I have owned, I have had a lot, that I would have another....probably the ED30

Kidfrost you wont be disappointed, I have had a 325i Sport and the GTi is more practical, better handling, faster, more economical and just as well built...in my opinion.

Iconic and exceptional - The Mk5 GTI is an excellent allrounder and is far more practical than many fast saloons and sportscars. 33,000 miles later and I'm still grinning and am convinced that I have an incurable condition called 'GTI-tus'. I could have bought another BMW, which I think are excellent cars, but the Mk5 GTI does everything I need in style and comfort and with performance (mine is heavily modded though). Frankly I don't care two sh!ts what other people think of my car....I'm the one enjoying her!

I'm due to take delivery of mine a couple of weeks.  I bought a golf GTi because a 5 month old little girl and a Boxster S does not mix well.  The Golf is a lot cheaper to own/run so I will save a bucket load of cash over the coming months.  Looking at cars in the £25K range, I couldn't find many cars that combine practicality (5 doors + boot) with performance.  Didn't fancy a Focus ST nor a CTR, I've had scoobys before so fancied something else.  My first car was a black MK2 Golf GTi 8v, so there's probably a hint of "those were the days..." in my decission.

Actually, my secret plan is to buy a Mk2 Tuscan S as well, but the war department doesn't know that yet.  So the Golf gives me practicality and reasonable perfomance whilst the Tuscan becomes my hedge seeking missile.

A post of mine from last year April...

Had to go to Newport Wales from Ipswich on Wednesday and stayed in the Celtic Manor - a top class hotel... they had an EU Heads of State meeting there last summer and are hosting the Ryder Cup there in 2010.. anyway, point is that you get some really rich people going there - not me, my company paid   - with their equally expensive cars... I saw a yellow Lambo there, an Aston Martin DB9, Maserati and was parked next to a Porsche Carrera 4.  What struck me though was when I parked up temporarily at the main entrance and checked in... Upon coming back to the GTI, it was surrounded by 3 smiling doormen looking through the windows at the mileage, looking at the alloys and the front grill and I wondered because these guys see top supercars everyday... that this interest means one thing - the Mk5 Golf GTI is class and despite the price tag, is up there with the best cars in the world.

The GTI transcends social and cultural differences and is a phenomenon its own right.  Tell that to the next guy who says its just a Golf.

Yep, i spent £23500 on my beauty, had £30000 given to me to go pick a car of my own, so could of bought pretty much anything, the golf was just always the class above the rest, had all positive and very few drawbacks, and as i was paying for it in full, i wanted a reatively good return in later years should i wanna chop her in at some point, but onlydrawback was having to take out shares in Shell petrol! as it regually emptys my pocket a week on average around £40.

So, normally when you order a new car, or actually have it, you'll see 10x as many of them on the roads as you did before the order.

It happened with my TT, A3's and such previously... Its almost like bionic vision... you spot them from 2 miles away....

But with the GTI ( ed30), this just hasnt happened...
I've seen many more new shape TT's ( all with the golf GTI engine ... nobody is driving the 3.2 V6 near me) , than I have GTI's of the same age or R32's.

SO far, since I ordered the car, and received it... I've seen one... and that was on the m4 near heathrow, when I was down that way on business.

To this point of the original post...

My dealer had the Ed30 in the showroom...  I saw it... sat in it.... and said to the missus,... " I WANT THIS ONE". It was a magical feeling... which I havent had for a car, in a very long time... then I test drove one... (unless the drive had been utterly shocking... I would have bought the Ed30 regardless).

I've been in lots of cars, and driven nearly as many of them... And nothing I've driven has given me that spine tingling feeling that the GTI did.

And... from what I can see... its a pretty damn exclusive car.

Thats why I bought a mere 'golf'!
