As im on the lookout for a 16valver I was wondering how much power could be got from the original block.
I really want to try and stick with the original instead of a conversion so any advice on modifications and what power output they give would be much appreciated!! :)

with a ported and polished head, decent cam, full system and manifold and a good solid engine to start with - you can expect to see 170 to 180bhp? i've heard anymore than that and the old k jet fuel injection can't keep up!
-
you can get 180 from a 2.0 16v running with just a head job & KR head all day long, and thats not even with the WUR mod done to it
basically mines at 150bhp with just the WUR mod on a 1.8 16v, but im sorta hoping you can also get 180bhp from a 1.8 and still have a daily driver. thats the plans for mine. but thats with head job & a set of cams, port matched manifolds and then hopefully remapping the superchip ignition module to get the most out of it
afaik k-jet limit is around 200bhp

Gambit please tell me about this WUR mod and where can i get it done to my 16v??
-
Stealth racing do it

You can, mine was easily drivable daily.

what all was done to yours slick?
-
Ported, polished, gas flowed, bored out to 2.0, completely lightened, mild cams, full stainless exhaust system. K&N panel, 4-2-1 stainless manifold.
Minds a little tired at the moment, so i think that's it. :undecided:
-
if i could get that sorta power out of it id stick with the 1.8 then.
Having had a mark 4 golf as my last car im not certain on the older engines.
Are they strong to start off with?
-
Yes, the shame with the newer engines is that as good as they are they have a massive weight to pull around due to euro safety laws etc.
I.e. the mk3s and 4s are quite boring to drive compared to the older models.
-
Thats really why I got rid. Very well built, just dull.
I thought id go for an older one and spend some getting it to how i want it.
-
If you want the engine to last make sure it gets regularly serviced and any problems that crop up with it get them sorted sooner rather than later
