OK, silly questions I know, but how do I know if I have xenons ? I'm told I do, but I'm not convinced, as I can't see any difference from normal headlights. Most of my nighttime driving is around lit London raods, so could that be why I don't notice the difference ?
Anyone know for sure how I can tell ?

Look at the front of my car, are your headlights the same - the xenon is the one on the outside of the lamp assembly? http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=61284.0 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=61284.0) - also you will have headlamp washers... directly below the headlamps...
-
If the bulbs have a little cover over the that look like the VW logo then you do not have xenons.
If the lights look like they are seated in a shiney dome sticking out under the lens then you do. Xenon also self level (lights move up and down) when the engine starts with the lights on.

I think headlight washers are also part of the winter pack so you could have washers without xenons.
-
hey, when you said self level, how do they do that? if you park on a hill facing down and star the engine, do they point up more or something?? lol
-
Good point, the headlight washers are part of the winter pack aswell...
Mind you, you should be able to tell you a difference in lighting... city driving isn't really a good test of Xenons, you will notice them in the countryside or on unlit motorways though... they are superb!

Xenons are connected to the front suspension and dip down when the points nose lifts to avoid dazzling oncomers.
They seem to 'system check' whenever you start the engine but you can only notice it if the lights are on.

I think you will find headlamp washers are standard by law with xenons. :nerd:

Yeah we got that covered, it's just you can have a GTi without xenons that has the washers.
-
of course... but they are also fitted if you buy the winter pack and specify normal halogen lights...
I had them on my Fabia vRS and knew I had to have them on the GTi aswell... they are so much better than halogens, plus they look much better aswell!

you can tell if you have xenons just by turning them on, wait until its dark switch them on, and they have a VERY distintive lighting up process. 1. everything goes blue straight away, and then they sort of "flash" on.
Normal lights are so poor compared to them. My other car has normal lights and i cant believe the difference when i went out in it the other night!!.
here is a good vid showing the start up of xenons-- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DklYu41spQo

If you do have them, they will look like this.

I certainly wish I could retrofit them onto mine...
I didnt get a chance to spec them on my Ed.30 as it was pre-specced by the stealer.
I had them on my last car, and I liked them a lot and could see a real difference.
My wife is getting a new car and I made sure they were on the spec for hers...
