Title: crunchy 2nd gear!!
Post by: jammac on 02 July 2007, 16:33
im going to buy a 2nd hand gearbox soonish. probably off ebay!

i was just wondering what kind of miles people have on their cars without 2nd gear crunch? my 8v GTI has 92000 on the clock confirmed by MOTs and FSH but my gearbox crunches going into 2nd.

ive seen some boxes going on ebay with 150000+ miles who claim not to have any probs at all! im just a little suspiciuos as my car seems to have always been looked after yet its gearbox is knackered!!

ill give it a redline MTL treatment. and i dont rag the car when its cold so im guessing i should get plenty of miles out of it.

i will also be fitting a new clutch at the same time as mines going to give up on me soon i think. probably on the way to bugjam if i dont get it done ASAP!!!!!!

i used landrover gearbox oil with 'stop crunch' stuff. Doesnt crunch once warm now

You need 2 litres of gearbox fluid in the box

A mk3 weighted shift rod can help it slip into gear smoother

If you havnt seen the ebay box working then dont believe them. THEY ALL CRUNCH

i assume my box is original and has therefore covered 223k miles.

it crunches slightly when cold, but only when you WHACK it into 2nd really quickly (as in, you wouldnt normally do it this fast). after 5 mins of driving, it wont crunch at all

i dont think its anything to worry about, unless it does it once warmed up.

yeah mine crunchs into 2nd nothing to worry about thou go easy on it for 5 mins then the oil is warmed anyway and stops doing it. vercosity of the oil is thinner when warm. or something like that

i changed my gearbox oil for redline MTL sometime ago now and it still crunches like a crunchy thing even when warmed up therefore i need another gearbox!

common prob on older cars, especially those owned by chavs who rag em off the lights.  Redline MTL can help but sometimes they're too far gone!

i don't think it's the MTL you want! just the regular 70w/90w?
please correct me if i'm wrong?

MTL is the one you want, has cured many a problem with crunchy second gears, however if the mesh is pretty much stripped then there is nothing that will save it.

oh thats interesting! i'm sure i read somewhere that the 75/90 is better in golf boxes than mtl? i use it in mine with no crunches? i guess i maybe i'm wrong or imagined it!

well redline MTL hasnt worked. its pretty far gone and i think its beyond help from any kind of oil!!!!

getting back to the subject.......

i just wanted to know if anyone hasnt got a crunchy gearbox (even when cold)? and how many miles its done???

my clutch is going anyway so ive got to remove the gearbox therefore i might aswell try a differant one.

They arn't supposed to crunch at all, mine doesnt and it came out of a low miler town driven 16v :)
Redline MTL is best for 020 boxes and MT90 is best for 02a boxes.

Just bought a 147 thou miler and have no crunching when either hot or cold. Think im gonna treat it anyway as a preventative measure after reading these threads  :undecided:

Mine was fine on purchase but 3 months later and its started crunching.  However as the drive shaft seal is leaking it may just need topping up, will see how I go before I do too much damage.

149K and no crunch at all... but it does whine, mainly in 2nd, which is annoying

I do treat him nice though, car's only been in two families, mine for the last 6 years, so I know it's always been treated well

My last Mk 2 gti used to have the 2nd gear crunch (only when cold) at 75,000 miles. My sisters started at about 90,000 miles and my current one at about 100,000 miles. Mine has now covered about 180,000 miles and its no worse than it was at 100k - as others have said, it clears when warm and in fact if you do a careful change when cold, you can avoid it altogether - you just get used to it.

Don't know if that helps.
