Picked my new 16v GTI up yesterday and drove it back form south birmingham.
Car drove ok aprt from the gearbox seems to have shifted/Rolled from the right to the left so 1st is maybe 3-4 inches from the left side and 5th is touching the right side of the plastic surround !!!
Is this common ??? I don't remember it like that on my last mk2 ???
Also it's a right pain in the arse to get it in 5th and clues ???
How much is a re con gearbox or maybe a new one ???
thanks for any help

if all the gears are there try a bush repair kit as they wear out over time.
also check the gear linkages the plastic rods as they can break etc
-
Cheers mate, just bought a repair kit
-
Its probably just jumped out of alignment. If your going to do the whole bush kit id also recomend buying the alignment tool as it takes all the guess work out of setting it back up. Its only a fiver on ebay!
-
How easy is this to do lads as i'm good with tools but not got that much engine/gearbox knowledge ???
-
Any idea where else i could buy an alignment tool ???, as i can't find any on eBay mate
-
check out my linkage FAQ, its dead easy. You don't need the tool as you can adjust the alignment with trial & error instead. The tool just makes it much easier!

cheers mate
