Title: gti insurance
Post by: pugwash77 on 01 July 2007, 14:34
hi all,

does anyone have any recommendations as where to try for insurance, does the gearing (either manual or dsg) affect it either way??

thanks pug

gearing affects insurance indirectly, through higher price of the vehicle. Effect is miniscule, other factors are more important.

I've just renewed mine... The best last year was elephant.co.uk at £350. The renewal was £500 and after shopping around, More than came out best at £380 (Protected no claims, 34, teacher, business use, 10,000 miles per year, me and wife, driveway, 06 GTi 5dr manual)
Elephant were excellent and I'd recommend them. More than seem OK, but they have the dreaded call centre in Bangladesh...

Nationwide and also Direct line  gave me a very cheap quote.

£668 , 10000 miles, garage, 23 year old with one fault claim in 2003 and 3 years no claim. Aint bad for someone my age and the car.

I didnt go with them in the end cos my insurance company (HSBC) matched their price so I would stay with them.

One tip I would like to share is, that some insurance companies only ask for claims history in last 3 years , while some ask for number of claims in 5 years. I had a crash 2003 (4 years ago now) and I found when I renewed my insurance, going to companies who ask for 3 years information obviously gave me a much lower quotes as far as they were concerned I hadnt had a crash. All insurance companies who asked for 5 years history, were very much more expensive.
Only really effects people who had crash over three years ago, but it might save you a few quid if in the same boat.

I'm with More Than and have found them to be excellent. Sorted out a claim on my last car very quickly, although you do get an Indian Call centre . If you shout loud enough they put you through to an English person .

Yes you are! I'm 26 carrying 5 current points, 3 oldish points and someone drove into me last year resulting in a claim but still have 8 years ncb, and i could knock over £400 off that price. Try Sainsburys!

07 plate Ed 30.
On drive ( garaged saved 3 quid!... so get the flexibility!)
37 yrs old
No points
NCD protection on full no claims
500 quid bang on, with legal cover , hire car etc...
With First Alternative
Good post code.

I was lazy... my TT which I had before was with F.A. and was easy to phone and switch...
I'll shop around next time its up for renewal ( Jan 08)

My wife would like to be on the insurance, but as she's only been driving for 2 years, it was going to be a tad pricey.

SO... I checked with Direct Line which she insures her mini with, and for next year I'm looking at about 400 or so with her on it, if we have 2 cars in the household with them as you get a 10% discount.

Ironically VW insurance was more expensive than anybody listed on Confused.com.... at 1300 quid...   I told the bloke it was all a bit embarrasing for them really....
