Im seriously sick of driving the mk2. Im after something more refined.
Am I nuts for even thinking of selling?
Everyone tells me that i will regtret it but how? Its just a respray, lowered and leather interior :undecided:
I need advice
-
buy an A3 1.8T if you can afford it.
-
Move up a mk!
-
i feel the same way about you mate sometimes....it seems a bit rough and i want a new clean, quiet car....but i do still have fun in it. it depends on the weather, mainly because i get soaked through the stupid sunroof when its wet which drives me NUTS!
i'd go for a focus 3 dr (but the interior is crap) or an audi a3 1.8tdi.
-
I nearly picked up a black audi A3 1.8T quatro with s3 leathers yesterday...He only wanted £2k
I could run 2 cars easily but have no room so I think the golf has to go some time soon.
Im after something more executive that starts on the button but nothing too pricey :embarassed:
Ive been in this dilemma for a while now as some of you know. I want to be certain that i wont regret selling tbh
I think im done with vw cars but not the scene itself
-
happily take the mk2 in px on the vr mate... lol...

-
is crafty buggers like you that make me think twice before selling
-
Maybe it's time to move on if you feel like that. I dont think your mad but it will be a shame. The best senario that i wish i could do would be to garage it or find a lock up somewhere for the winter. That way you could get something more modern / reliable for the crappy weather then bring out the beast in the summer by which time you will be itching to drive her again!
If you can't do that then she's got to go to a good home where somebody will treat the car with the respect she deserves.
Good luck in your decision. VW forever!!
-
At the end of the day, if you regret it , you can always get another mk2 as there are plenty of decent ones about.
-
^agree with Alan..
if you have lost the love blue..its gotta go...
how much ya selling it for?
Dinx
-
It's the amount of time and effort you have put in though as well, plus I don't agree it is that easy to find another good one.
I got something newer/modern/reliable etc and didn't use the mk2 for a while. Look what happened - dead mk4 and me driving the mk2 all the time
It's just a car blue
-
I debated sellin my golf for so long before I eventually decided to do it. If you have run out of love for it then it is time to change. Id just keep lookin for the right replacement first. once it turns up then it wont be so bad gettin rid of the mk2.
-
A few years ago I went through the same dilemma - wanted something more refined and comfy. I went to look at various other cars. I never did get rid largely down to lack of time and lazyness. Now I am so glad I didn't, and the love has returned
With hindsight I would have defo regretted it. For me the "ooh thats a nice car" you get in the pub car park and from passers by is priceless. The old car jokes i get dont quite balance things out
If you can, KEEP!

I'm a Mini man who's hoping to buy a mkII soon. At the weekend I drove a 1979 850cc Mini City from Warwickshire to North Yorkshire and back for the Moorland & Coastal Tour. You call a Golf unrefined?
All depends where your head is I suppose......
-
agree with jv. it won't be that easy to find another straight mk2. how about spending a little on the bright blue to further refine it? stock 1.8t engine swap? that would start every time plus give more power.
how about some dynamatt under the carpets and doorcards to quiten down the road noise?
i guess if you're thinking of selling then you'll never know until you actually watch somebody else drive it away how you're going to feel?
i say keep it
-
The quote in your signature says it all
Could you really part with a car like that for soemthing as anonymouse as an A3 ?
-
Blue - go drive a Mondeo, perhaps hire one for a few days.
You will never sell your car then!
-
I think sometimes it a case of the grass is always greener but as said you'll never know unless you do sell, its a difficult dilema and I'm sure many of us with the older GTI's go through the same thing but good luck and I hope the choice you make is the best one for you
-
Or buy a Mk3 with ABS and air-con!

Definately agree with this! I drove the top of the range one once, V6 2.6 diesel or something... and it was just all wrong! I also kept on stalling it... i didnt think you could stall a diesel lol Felt good to get back in the Mk2 even if it is only the 1.3 :) It was MINE... and i know its the same for you Blue, youve had yours the same sort of time as mine. :) Sell it to me though if you want :D

I once borrowed a V6 Mondeo (old style) , and it was pretty bad, even the Vectra diesel I borrowed from work was better. I was so glad to get back into my Mk2 after that. It's not suprising they got the name "mundane-o".
I hear the new ones are better though.
What are you thinking of replacing it with though ?
-
Less of the dissing the mongayoes
TDCI 130 bhp , and a boot big enough to sleep in
still rather have a mk2 tho and the fact that i can see many people climbing over seats to get in the back
-
ive driven almost everything as i used to work at a car auction.
Ok i wont sell (said that like 4 times now)
Wooh that was easy
Thanks people

Heretic... how could you even think of it? - Unless of course, you sell it to me

Move up a mk!
That would mean he'd have to get a Mk3
-
I've been driving a 53 plate Saab 95 for business for a week or so now, and I can't wait to ditch it in the work car park and drive my Mk2 home.
Most modern cars are to heavy and boring to drive. The mk2 has throttle response, brake feel, steering feel.......etc
Don't sell it !

hahah mk3's are alrite
Had cabs and vr6's. Love em :lipsrsealed:
-
Im kind of in the same position as you. I have a love hate relationship with my mk2 i really love the car (when she works) and i can see what i want to have done to it but i cant see it happening anytime soon, then little things keep going wrong which makes me think whats the point!?! Id like something a little more 'modern' so im thinking of selling her next year when i have more no claims and going for a mk3 GTI but i really cant decide what to do! I hate making decisions
-
I think im going to go back to a mk2 i love my VR the noise and performance are great but theres some thing about the mk2s, when i see one on the road which is getting less and less now i always have to have a good look at it or i find my self parking next to them and having a look round them, my wife thinks i have a problem . Looks like a mk2 16v for me next.
-
i'm thinking of selling my polo 16v that i bought in march and buying a mk2 aswell.
must be catching.
-
stick with the mk2 I would say. I havent had one before but I have test driven one and well let's just say I'm going to ditch modern and refined for raw and responsive.
I have a 2003 1.2 ibiza. (I know it's not a luxury top spec golf but it's still a modern hatchback) Which to be fair although slow, is still very refined and quiet. The steering is electric and very very light. Long drives are pretty easy in it. It's got air con, electric windows, remote central locking, cd player and all that malark which aint bad at all on a base model Seat.
But essentially it'll be like trading in the fun of motoring for the chore of motoring. Hence why I'm looking to get myself a valver. Yeah a newer car would be a lot more comfortable but you dont really ever feel "in control" of the car as such. You dont feel hardly any of the road combined with the light steering means any desire for spirited turn ins on fast corners are quickly disappated as you simply dont know how the car will react as you are in some ways numb to it all.
A modern car will take you from A to B in relative comfort but with all modern cars looking more and more the same nowadays I find the angular square like mk2 golfs the most alternative not to mention coolest looking vehicles on the road. Also new cars are a lot fatter than older cars, and if you want performance then you'll have to shell out a lot more cash for a similar driving experience. My car handles like a boat and even though classed as a "supermini" it weighs a lot more than a golf! Think about it man, it's up to you, I'm sure you'll make the right choice.

Richie Lee

Well said though, i think these vehicles seem to attract obsessive personanilties that can't let go. I have thought about selling mine several times when its been leaking orhad this that or the other go wrong. One thing that does surprise me is that nobody of the older generation seems to regard them as a classic, they are just well built old hatchbacks to most. Theythink something like a Mgb or triumph Stagg is a true classic. In all fairness with the right suspenson these cars are not less comfortable than a modern car imo. I always love getting back into the mark 2 after driving something else, it just feels so solid and right. Thats my two pence worth anyway. Dont sell, fuel the desease.
-
if you look around the show scene a straight mk2 is rarer and rarer... everyone wants the 1's, and the fours and fives are for "rich" people who want to spend loadsa money on a car and even more on bits (i'm jsut jealous)
but if you can see the point i'm unsuccessfully tryin to make the 2's are the forgotten breed i think!
kinda want mine back!!!
-
I must admit the mark 1 is the one, but they are all rotten and are hard to find. Mark twos are getting this way, keep it, i don't think they cost a lot to run once they are rght, but i might be fooled by an obsession,
-
I've just caved in myself, and decided to sell my G60 too, just after throwing £000's at her too. Moving house and expanding family are pointing towards an A4 Avant TDI......
I know I'll regret it, but it's got to happen.
I'll get another one when the kids are older!
See the For Sale section for more details.....
-
ive always thought the mk1 was for the rich
-
-
good to read the replies people put, I love the mk2 as well it best if you do lower milage and shorter journey then th unrefinedness isnt aproblem i find my mk3 r reg 16v a good compromise
-
Hi Mate,
I was just wondering if this MK2 is going to be for sale. If so, could you please give me an idea of the price please?
Cash waiting...
Cheers!
Sukhi.

Not the only blood that boiled :undecided:
-
 If that's blood then maybe it was simply the scene of a fight... not just deliberate vandalism.
Doesn't make it right though, of course
-
at least if they were fightimg over your car it stalled them beofre someone frightened them off! thats a fecking damn shame someone has done that, sorry to see, all repairable though
-
why do people feel the need to vandalise stuff that doesnt belong to them, i had my car keyed along both sides and looks as though someone booted the drivers door. Sorry to see that mate!
-
The story...
A random man and woman arguing outside mine. He decides to kick my car in.
They run off and i walk outside (still half asleep) and get hit with a knife on the back of my head. I thought it was a bat but the neighbour saw what happend. (the cock didnt even help and told me 3 days later)
and im on bail. Great
-
sorry to hear that blue, but got a spare blue door if you need it
