Ok just a quick debate.... or maybe a RANT LOL??
You have parkers and you have Glasses guides which price the mk3 golf gti's on a average of about 80k about £2k max.... and the VR6 at about £2.5k
But when you look through the autotrader you see these cars with this sort of mileage for around 500 - 2000 pounds above the guide price.
The only reason for this rant is i wasted alot of time today!!!!
I went to go and see a 98 mk3 gti with 80k on the clock for about 2.5k and it was a right dog worth no more than 1.5k tops according to parkers.
It seems that people are jumping on this band wagon and trying there luck!!!!
When you expect a car to be mint for the price they are asking and the interview you had with them on the phone... and turn up after a 2hr journey to find a mangy dog and then go home after 10mins of being there IT REALLY MIFFS YOU OFF!!!!!!
Rant over.... saying that i returned home to find a VR6 highline at a local garage with 88k on the clock for 3k.... at least its only round the corner this time LOL fingers crossed....!!!

old cars are worth what someone wants to pay for 'em.
I sold my 95 mk3 for £1800 in march. It was mint with FSH and 66k on it and that was a good price. I've seen similar on autotrader up for varying money from £1000 - £3000.
I know what you mean about sh!tty descriptions tho'. Pain in the arsend

its the magic low mileage which with a vw really doesnt matter a whole lot.
always always go on condition and history or at least signs its been looked after. tbh seen
Mk3 Gti's with 180k plus on them in better condition than cars that have done half the mileage.
when I bought my old red gti in in sig pic it had done 66 thousand full vag etc yet needed a new gear box
sold it with 125k on it and it was a far better car new brakes suspension gearbox etc no rust any where a few stone cips on the leading edge but it was a 9 yr old car.
Still think VW Golf's are better after 100K as they are run in
yes if abused then can be a pup
but most abused cars are easy to spot worn suspension tatty interiors etc
personally I would spend around £1500 to 2k and go for a car with just over 100K full or most history with recent bills for expensive to replace items ie suspension, brakes clutch etc.
but this is only my view

as long as they've been well maintained they will , well the old pre 98 models anyway. quality slipped a bit around that point by all accounts.
It's always seemed to me that VW put less strain on their engines than most manifacturers if you look at bhp/cc figures.
most VW 1.4 's were @60bhp when most other makes were around 75bhp.
1.6's were 75 when others makes were @90 and so on.
I may be talking out of my arse tho', wouldn't be the first time. :laugh:

I had terrible experiences when looking to buy a car last time around. I'd ask about any rust to be assured it was all fine, only to drive a long way and find the car is a total rot box.
Realised my mistake though - was looking for a fiesta xr2i/rs

ha ha Fords never will i own a fix or repair daily again!!!! had RS turbos that were fun but kept falling apart.
Good news (well kind of) is we wrote off the missus car so we are going to buy a work horse (polo etc) for her to commute in and i get to up the budget to 4.5k..... Seen some Bora V5 that look very nice!!!!
any ideas for 4.5k with under 80k on the clock???

Mk4 GTi 1.8T would be my choice, there are a few around in good nick for that money!!!!! Possibly eve a MK4 Golf V5
