Difficult one!  Anywhere between £600 and £3000 depending on quality, preparation etc etc.

Otherwise approx £100 per panel.  :undecided:

I agree really.

For less than £1k you really need to know someone or get in touch with an enthusiast who sprays part time in their home garage

I got quoted £800 yesterday by a sprayer i use on the regular.

Everything sprayed apart from the roof and bumpers. £800

full paint would be looking at £1200+

two people. same quotes

How much do you have to spend on paint?

My mate got a cheap job done from the same guy i use and he got a cheap finish

The problem you have with quoting for full resprays on older cars is that  there is a good chance of unforseen problems occuring such as rust or previous accident damage that has been repaired, this will always push the price up so you have to expect that when you get a quote, the chances are the finished article will actually be a higher price than orignially quoted.

If you wanted to reduce the costs slightly you could always do as much of the work yourself as you can for instance stripping off panels and trims but then if you break it, you have to fix it. You could also refit it all after but then there is a chance of you damaging the paint

The best thing to do is go to a few bodyshops and have a chat with them and see what you can work out, there is a good write up in practical performance car this month about bodyshops which may prove useful to you

If your going to get your car resprayed but your doing it on a budget, your best prepping the car yourself, e.g. removing all trim, flatting paint, filling dents and repairing rust, even primer the car yourself aswell if you feel confident as doing all this will save a hell of a lot of hours in the bodyshop!

Cheers,
Andy

You say this, but i've found some body shops don't like pre-prepped cars.
i guess as the finish is so crucial to the level/quality of preperation involved.
by all means remove plastic trim etc but be i'd check first before getting the sandpaper and filler out

I was about to say the same thing. They said it would bung the price up if the prep is done badly. So not a good idea.

Just strip the car down and hand it them

Yes you are both right, I should of said dont do any bodywork unless you know how and are good at it. I do bodywork on a regular basis so its easy for me to say 'prep your car yourself'  It's not as if it's a ten minute job, you have to be very meticulous and take your time, prep work is 90% of the job! If the prep is bad then the paint will be worse!

Sorry lads!

Cheers,
Andy

I paint cars for a living (amomgst other things) the very last thing I would want, is to paint on top of someones botched self prep! the prep is 95% of the job, it is everything!
Instead of trying to save money by doing stuff yourself, you would be far better off, doing a little overtime at work!!, doing something you know what to do!
Find a reccomended paint shop, get a firm quote, and expect to pay at least double!!

I woukld second that, leave the prep alone if you want the overall finish to be good

My bro's had a firm quote to do the work on his mk1 gti campaign
Full engine rebuild
full re spray
and seats front and rear re-covered

£2200 !!!

That sounds very cheap to me ????

It's at the place in knutsford i said earlier the guy has done the same on his own mk1

£2200 for all that work sounds crazy cheap  I'd expect to be paying that for the spraying alone, plus extra for any other bodywork that needed doing, and I wouldn't expect much change from a grand for a rebuild (I'd want EVERYTHING done though)

If he goes for it and it's not sh!t post pics.... cause I'd be there in a shot!!

I'd say in the region of £1750-2k for a quality respray.

but £2200 for all that seems dirt cheap!

That's what I'm thinking of doing. I've done plenty of little spray jobs myself with rattle cans and bare-metalled my old Beetle etc. Want somewere where I can prep it etc, then just get the guy to do any neceassary welding and check over what I've done and sort any bits that aren't perfect.

tbh honest i am doin everythin myself strip repairs prime and prep includin the weldin but i am a fully trained panel beater and have been doin the job for 4 years and i have always worked in the same place its merc toyota mazda suzuki and chystler approved and we do alot of resprays and wen people who do the prep themselves bring it in it can be quite shockin wot they think is ok     by all means it is nice wen a car comes stripped but not wen the owner has dun the repairs themself

my mate sprays cars and he said if i want the whole car sanded down and chips removed it would be £1000 in the same colour which is black. if i wanted to change the colour he said im looking at £2000. the cost is in the masking and the patch ups. he said if i can rub it all down myself and take all the windows/lights out he would do it for less. and i call him a mate! lol

There's a ton of tips & tricks & education links about car paint spraying on youtube.

There's a link from this little vid www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFoCvT7eHYc on the "more info" link that takes you to a UK Ebay store, and the buyers reviews seem quite good, £2 for a DVD seems pretty good to me.

His mullet cracks me up though, aparently he doesn't have it anymore, but people are asking for him to grow it again because it's so funny

I work in a bodyshop it's ok doing your own prep but unless you know what you're doing you may well end up with problems later down the line (micro blisters, bubbling etc).  save up!  there's nothing worse than having a beautiful job that turns bad a few months later.

I have paid this week on a mk3 £1000 to have:

Both sides sprayed, rear quarters, doors, wings,
Bonnet, Grille
Both Door sills repaired, one welded, and one rubbed back and repaired.
Both Door shuts sprayed.

That is without having the bumpers, roof, and tailgate sprayed. But a top notch job.

They should just pull off the connectors mate.

Do the have the type of connector you have to squeeze like the three temp sensors on the head?
