Title: fitting iPod in armrest
Post by: p3eps on 24 June 2007, 09:26
I just got my Alpine iDA-X001 stereo the other day and am going to fit it into my MK5 golf soon.  The stereo is specifically designed for iPod and has no CD player.
I was wanting to put the iPod in the cubby under the steering wheel... but it wont fit when the cable is connected - so I've decided the center armrest may be the next best option.

I can see how the gearstick cover comes off, and also the ashtray area.  The actual armrest has a removable panel... but how do I get the wire through the sliding cup holder / bottle opener section?!
Is it safe to run a cable in here or will it interfere with anything?

The factory wiring goes underneath the centre console/armrest. Should be simple enough to feed it under the trim or take the console/armrest out to do it properly.

Helpful instructions and diagrams for trim removal here:

I had a bash at it this afternoon!
I removed the armrest housing although the armrest remained... and also the gear stick cover and ashtray area.  I was then able to tie my cable onto my aerial and then push it through from the gearstick area under the cup holder and was able to grab it at the other side.

Now I have the cable in the armrest I need to figure out what I'm going to do with it!!
The X001 stereo gives you a USB cable at the end where you can attach either a USB memory stick, or the 10cm iPod connector lead - so I'd like to have it so that both are availble.  Might have to think about it for a while!!
