ive been trying to get my car ready for an mot. however there are 3 main problems:
1. battery keeps going dead, i.e run the car, turn if off and theres no power to start it again.
2. windscreen wipers dont work. changed the relay and check the fuses.
3. the headlights only have main beam. no dipped or high. looks like the previous owner has try a diy as there are realys at the front. ive been told they dont have relays as standard.
any help would be greatly appreciated

get the altinator checked out as it sounds goosed.
Simple test for you to do is...
get car running and with it still running disconect the +ve side of the battery, if it stops then the alternator is fooked.
Sounds like that anyway.
But as for the lights you will just have to start at the headlamp and work your way up the cable testing for current untill yuo find the brake in one of the wires. Slow job i know but no other answer for it
hope this helps

are the wipers connected? after i had some work done on my heater matrix they forgot to plus wipers back in!!!
-
as above, alternator may run the car but often diode packs will drain the battery when its turned off. not sure from memory but i know they can be replaced instead of the whole unit on some cars.

any luck?
i had an issue with my wipers the other day, the didnt work until i went over a bump and now all is fine again!?

ive got the mainlights and dipped beam working, but not the flashing/high beam. as for the wipers just going to buy a secondhand motor and hope it works. its just annoying as these small problems are stopping me from getting it on thte road.
also managed to fix the horn, there wasnt one  so i took one from my bros car he wasnt using. first mk1 golf with a skyline horn

i have sorted most of the problems now (touch wood). the only problem is the high beam flash, when you pull back the indicator stalk, doesnt work. i have found two wires which come from the head light and indicator wire under the bonnet (blue/white and white/red, i think) with a connector at the end. is this something to do with it. any info about how the flasher works would be very helpful

i havent been working on my golf for a while due to money, but now i have some  i still have this problem where the lights work, spots come on and the main headlights, but not the pull back high beam. just wondering two things, firstly when you pull the stalk back is it meant to click and stay????
also there are relays(blue) in the engine bay, i bypassed these to get the spots and headlight to work. what are they as they dont look standard, and would this affect the problem above???
any help would be great, really wanna get it on the road as my 1.0l swift is killing me!!

When you pull the lever back you can pull it and beam comes on (does it come on at all or never??)
For it to stay on i have to push mine (back) forwards to hear the click (i spent a few weeks driving round with main beam on after flashing people when i got the car) It took a bit of jiiggling but now it moves freely!
Hope that helps./..

Not sure about realys sorry...

i think the relay for the dip beam is number 20 pal

no relays for the lights, except on some MK1s with spots you'll find one in the engine bay fixed to the passenger side inner wing. (Unless someone has fitted an aftermarket uprated headlight loom of course)
When you pull the stalk towards you it switches between dipped & main beams, you'll also see on the dash a warning light which will be yellow or blue depending on the age of car.
The fact the spots come on suggests there is nothing wrong with the wiring to the stalk, as these should only come on with the main beam! Could be the main beam filaments in the headlights has blown?
