Thanks JV,
Right I'm just upgrading from this:
Y/2001 Golf 2.0 8v GTI 3dr
To this:
51/2002 Golf 1.8T 20v GTI 5dr
I'm picking her up in the morning.
The "Offical" Reason (ie the one I told the missus!) is that getting our son's baby seat into the back of a 3dr is a royal pain in the a@se. So we need a 5dr... The better engine has nothing to do with it.....
Anyway I've got a few bits I want to do with her (Mostly interior work at the moment) & thought I'd share my (mis)adventures with you guys
-
Got her this morning & have wasted no time!
I'm gonna try to write little DIY guides for everything I do (but that might not last long!)
Sunglasses Holder
The easiest thing in the world!
Tools Required:
1. No.2 Point Pozi-Drive Screwdriver
2. Small Flat-Head Screwdriver (Or Long Finger Nails!)
Step One: Pull existing grab handle down & use flat headed screwdriver to flip open the screw covers
You should see this:
Step Two: Remove the two screws & the grab handle will come away from the trim.
Step Three: Using the two screws provided with the kit, attach the sunglasses holder.
Step Four: Admire your handiwork!
-
W8 Interior Light
Tools Required:
1. No.2 Point Pozi-Drive Screwdriver
2. Small Flat-Head Screwdriver
3. Your choice of electrical connection (scotchlok, soldering iron etc)
Before starting disconnect the battery neutral wire!
Step One: Using the small flat-head screwdriver, gently prise the lens from the existing light (from the windscreen side)
Step Two: Remove the two pozi-drive screws
(http://homepage.ntlworld.com/phil.ellis87/Golf%20GTI/W8%20001.jpg)
Step Three: Pull gently down on the windscreen side of the light, then pull towards the windscreen to remove it from the cavity.
Step Four: Fold down the small visor (between the light cavity & the windscreen) & remove the single pozi-drive screw. The visor will now pull off. Put this somewhere safe.
Step Five: Attach the "adapter" loom to the W8 light & the existing loom. Feed the long wire through the cavity & out of the headlining by the windscreen. If (like me) your W8 light didn't come with the extra loom, you can get them from vw_teeside on ebay for about £8
Step Six: Hook the rear edge of the W8 light into the cavity & then push upwards on the front edge to pivot the light into position. It should "click" when it's fully home. I had to remove a small amount of foam from the back left of the cavity to allow room for the new loom.
You now should have something like this:
Step Seven: Remove the fuse box cover & console end piece by carefully prying out with small flat-head screwdriver.
Step Eight: Route the wire along the top of the windscreen, down the A-pillar (tucking it into the headling as you go) & into the space behind the fuse box.
Step Nine: Using your preferred method of electrical connection, connect the wire to the blue/grey wire from the dimmer switch.
Step Ten: Refit the side trim, fuse box cover & visor
Step Eleven: Reconnect battery & look at the pretty light!
-
R32 Pedals
Tools Required:
1. Soapy Water
2. Patience!
Step One: Pull the existing pedal covers off. This is a bit awkward
Step Two: Fit the new covers. I found a little soapy water eased this process, but it was still tricky. The clutch pedal was done by hooking the right side onto the pedal & pulling the left side on. The brake was done by hooking on the left side & pulling the right on.

Cruise Control
(http://homepage.ntlworld.com/phil.ellis87/Golf%20GTI/Cruise.jpg)
Follow This Guide! (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dgace/cruise_control.htm) as the VW installation instructions are a bit dodgy...
You also need part no. 1J0.971.425.C
One thing that really isn't very clear in VW's instruction book, is that the loom (that fits into the cruise stalk) fits into the socket for the black plug (T10e) NOT the black plug itself. I had to read it a couple of times before I realized  & had to redo it :embarassed: The additional loom (1J0.971.425.C) goes into the plug & connects to the 81pin socket on the ECU.
-
Just put a 312mm brake kit on & took the opportunity to paint the calipers. Sadly I've no pictures at the moment as my pc has died!
-
I've not really done much this week. Getting VAGCOM on it tomorrow to activate my cruise.
Sadly my pc is still dead & I haven't worked out how to upload pictures from my PS3, so still no pics of the brakes :(
-
I've got the cruise control activated now (it's great) but VAGCOM identified a fault with my dump valve, so i'm gonna get a Forge 007 asap
-
(http://homepage.ntlworld.com/phil.ellis87/Golf%20GTI/29072007033.jpg)
Here's a pic of the 312mm brake setup, once I get my alloys replaced/refurbished (havent decide yet) they'll look excellent
-
Forge 007p Dump Valve
Tools Required
1, Flat head Screwdriver
Step One: Release the three quarter turn screws & remove the plastic engine cover.
Step Two: Remove the three jubilee clips holding the OEM dump valve to the hoses.
Step Three: Replace the jubilee clips & fit the forge valve, The hoses need to be tight but dont go nuts & have the clips cutting into them.
Step Four: Replace the plastic engine cover
Job Done!
-
I've not really done much recently. Just replaced a split hose & fitted some new plugs.
Hope to do some more mods next month
-
Just ordered myself some bora vents
-
where did you order the bora vents from mate?
-
Here (http://www.vwspeed.co.uk/volkswagen/vw-parts/R32_Flush_Closing_Dashboard_Vents-1340-238.html)
-
cheers!
-
No probs mate. I was feeling flush earlier so I've also ordered the R32 door handles & console trim
-
Finger Plate & Door Handles
Tools Required
1, Flat head Screwdriver
2, No.1 Point Pozidrive Screwdriver
Step One: Pull off the inner grip from the fingerplate
(http://homepage.ntlworld.com/phil.ellis87/Golf%20GTI/Fingerplate1.jpg)
Step Two: Pull fingerplate upwards to remove. Disconnect wire
(http://homepage.ntlworld.com/phil.ellis87/Golf%20GTI/Fingerplate2.jpg)
Step Three: Remove switch assembly (three screws)
Step Four: Reassemble in reverse order.
Step Five: Prise door handle off using flat screwdriver. I found it easiest to prise from the bottom of the handle.
Step Six: Push new handle into place. Job done
-
Bora Vents Loom
As most of you will probably know, the wiring loom for the Bora vents is almost impossible to get now. So I've made my own! All credit goes to old_n07 on ukmkivs for his how to guide (http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/thread/814045.aspx)

Bora Vents
Finally got around to fitting them, but forgot to take pics during the install. So here's a pic of the finished article:
-
Just fitted some Aero Wipers. Not done anything else recently (Christmas was expensive!)
-
Got my spoiler through today, gonna get it painted & fixed on over the weekend
-
Spoiler is on. However after Ash's little *incident* I'm giving it a full 24hours for the resin to set!
-
Here are a couple of pics:
You can see my red GTI badge in the first one

Just ordered some of These (http://www.lockwoodinternational.co.uk/golf-mk4-gti-4-door-sill-protectors-part-no-k92-more-details-i918.html)
Then noticed the company is in Leeds & only five minutes away. I could of saved a fiver by nipping round there
-
I had some spare time  so i've smoothed my air box
(http://homepage.ntlworld.com/phil.ellis87/Golf%20GTI/Air%20Box.jpg)

Just been browsing & I'm seriously tempted to buy an Evolution V-Flow Intake.
VW Speed are selling them for £255. Direct from the manufacturers is $289 (£143ish) just emailed to see if they'll ship to the UK
Check out www.evoms.com for more info

Well i figured it's about time i continued moding the car. I've not done anything over the summer (except fit the sill guards).
The plan of action is as follows:
Induction Kit (Evolution V-Flow or K&N Typhoon, not decided yet)
S3 Anti-roll bars
Blueflame Exhaust
FMIC
REVO Remap
Might take a little while to raise funds  I want it now!!!

I think both those induction kit put the filter in the bumper where it wil lsuck up water, look at the Neuspeed P-Flo on awesome as an alternativve, don't bother with REVO go with R-Tech there reviews have been spot on and you'll save some money!
Good to see you back too

The V-flow doesnt relocate to behind the bumper (there's a pic a couple of posts back) but I'll check out the Neuspeed. Thanks for the heads up on R-Tech, I'm always after saving a few pounds!
-
Well funds are still low so I've not done much for too long
Just got an ipod adapter, But I'm hoping to get some 18" alloys at the weekend (if they're in good shape)
-
Well the ipod kit is fitted, Was a fiddly job in the end. I decide to run it down the centre console to where the arm rest will be fitted (when I get round to buying one). I also tided up the wiring for my bora vents whilst all the trim was off.
-
It's been a LONG time since i had any cash to throw the way of the car.....
Got my forge boost hoses earlier today, (big thanks to ivor & damian for the group buy) so they're going on on tuesday (day off)
Plus pipiercross filters are on special at awesome atm so might have to dig into the wallet!
Keep posted!
-
I've had a little spare time today so i've got the top 3 hoses fitted!
Here they are in all their glory!
Old hoses in place
It took a little bit of persuasion to get a couple of the old clips off, but eventually:
Good riddance to bad rubbish!
Since everyone uses the ukmkivs how-to for fitting these, I will refer to the hoses by the numbers used here:
I was expecting hose 4 to be a b*stard after some of the things i've heard. however it was simple (then again I am a gas engineer & i'm used to persuading hoses to go where they dont want to). I started by pushing the turbo end on with the other end pointing towards me (90 degrees anti clockwise from where it will end up) once that was on I pushed down while twisting clockwise. Lined up nicely so quick tighten on the jubilee clips & stand back to admire! If you find the hose is kinking you need to twist the turbo end of the hose.
Now put the heat shield back on while you remember!! I nearly forgot!
Next comes hose one: Easy!!!
Hose 3 is the easiest of the lot!
This is the reason why silicon hoses are worth doing:
As you can see there is almost no reinforcement at all in the OEM hose
Now, the eagle eyed peeps should of noticed this:
Nice split hose, as a temperary repair (until I can get down to the stealers) i've patched it using a section of the OEM hose 3 & some 22mm copper pipe as an insert (not perfect but it will hold till monday):
I also found that the coil packs on cylinders 1 & 3 weren't pushed fully home, which might go some way to explaining the (very) intermittent misfire i keep getting.
While I was in there I gave the block a quick clean:
I'll whip the bumper off for pipes 2 & 5 as soon as I get chance!
-
I've got the last two hoses on now, turned out to be a fairly painless job!
I whiped the bumper off & removed the offside headlight to get access to the jubilee clips:
I got hose 2 fitted before releasing the intercooler,
(http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn273/death_zane/BoostHose11.jpg)
I removed the three bolts holding the intercooler in place to give me enough play to remove hose 5
(http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn273/death_zane/BoostHose13.jpg)
As everyone else has found; there was a little oil in the pipe, but nothing excessive. I Obviously have repositioned the jubilee clips on all the pipes to allow easier access in the future.
Got the bumper back on & went for a test blast up the bypass, everything seems to be ok
-
Just ordered my Pipercros VIS induction kit from awesome (£125 Delivered instead of £255 ex vat & P&P)

-
The induction kit arrived today  Now just need a day off to fit it!
-
I fitted the induction kit after work this evening, sadly no pics as it was getting dark & I wanted to get it done! I'll post a couple tomorrow
First impressions are good, I gave it a boot down the bypass & got a pleasent suprise at the improvement in the throttle response! Plus my DV is now audiable!
-
My god it's been over 6 months since i've posted anything!
Quick update:
1: Sailed through its MOT in september
2: Had a full service last month found a split hose
3: Had 2 new tyres fitted
4: Replaced another split hose
-
Oh & I've also fitted some bora sport speedo foils
-
Had a few little problems recently.
Yet another split hose
Dead Battery
Then the starter motor burnt out
Now I need new discs & pads, 2010 looks like it's gonna be expensive
-
Ordered my new discs & pads earlier
Hopefully they'll arrive for the weekend
-
The last year has been pretty slow on the mods front.
I fitted some EBC 312mm discs & Red Stuff pads, replaced the battery (again) after it froze in the winter.
Some little scrote went to town on my bonnet & drivers side with a key (CNUT!), so half the car needs a re-spary!
Hopefully now i've got my finances sorted I can get back to throwing money at my baby!
-
Oh I also had to replace the near side hub after the twit at my local garage over tightened the bolts securing the caliper carrier to it. The tosser managed to strip the thread from the inside of the hub. So that was a nice expense
-
It's been far, far, FAR too long since my baby has had any modification
However...... The modding beast has reawoken within me.
Plans for the next couple of months:
3" Exhaust (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/99-04-VW-Golf-MK4-3-1-8L-Turbo-Full-Catback-Exhaust-w-Downpipe-/380601246249?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item589d9a2229) with a 200 cell cat welded in (cause I cannot be bothered with messing around at MOT time)
K04 (or possibly a hybrid) plus all the additional requirements (injectors, MAF, fpr etc)
FMIC (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FRONT-MOUNT-UNIVERSAL-ALUMINIUM-INTERCOOLER-/200893918555?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2ec635ed5b)
& a visit to RTech to get everything mapped in
Lets hope nothing crops up to divert my finances (again)
-
Made the first steps in continuing the mods, getting a oil catch can from Wazzer & picking up some hoses to pipe up a FMIC on monday.
-
Two new tires on the back today.
I think my rear washer has sprung a leak. Found about an inch of windscreen washer fluid in the spare wheel well & the boot catch seems to have gone a nice rusty colour. So finding the cause is tomorrow's job.
If I can get hold of some red 3mm vac hose in the morning, ill do the n249 delete...
-
Finally got enough time to do some work (though not much ). Mostly maintenance & minor repairs. As some of you know I've been having some rough running issues recently that culminated with idling so low that it was on the verge of stalling & not generating sufficient vacuum to activate the brake servo
First things first, I whipped out the MAF & gave it a clean
(http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a583/Dj_Immortal_uk/D3DFF25D-1D95-47E0-B504-EF329A539CCA-1845-000001D755722074_zps11a43a68.jpg)
Whilst the MAF was nicely soaking in some carb cleaner, I got on with some other bits:
I've been meaning to change the temp sensor for a while, as you can see it had the old black version fitted.
I can't remember the last time I cleaned the throttle body, so i figured that means its time to do it! As it turned out, I was right
(http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a583/Dj_Immortal_uk/D33F26AC-B888-4806-BAB6-C9934A27AB34-1845-000001D7649B835B_zpsb2e46103.jpg)
It took quite a while to get all the gunk off, but eventually:
Got everything back together & ran it through several ignition cycles & went for a nice long test drive to allow the throttle to realign
(http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a583/Dj_Immortal_uk/3EAD0591-2DEB-481F-97EF-E95CE8986939-1845-000001D7767EF8A6_zps670c2f1c.jpg)
I mentioned I thought I'd got a leak on my rear wiper, this is why:

Once I got the trim off; the extent of the problem became apparent:

As usual, the connector had a crack in it (not easy to see in this pic)
Quick repair & job done
(http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a583/Dj_Immortal_uk/557A5C76-FDB8-4328-9BDC-71BC6441B77F-1845-000001D748E9FB76_zps65e70778.jpg)
I was planning on bypassing the n249 today, but I didn't have time , however I did one highly important job:
Nice new key case!
Got a couple of other bits to do but that's it for today, and the good news is....... The hesitation & rough running has gone
-
Fitted a Bora sport gear knob & gaiter.
Thanks Wazzer!
-
My rough running returned with a vengeance (popping & spluttering) about 2 weeks ago, so having exhausted all my ideas I decided to go back & go through everything again.
I apologise in advance for the lack of photos, this is due to the fact that after about 3 minutes my mood changed from a bit iritated to murderous!
I decided to start by checking my fuel filter (bear in mind that the car was serviced recently & I'd specifically asked them to change the fuel & oil filters), so I jacked her up & had a nosey; the filter looked like the original (covered in corrosion)! Luckily my local motorsave store opens on Sundays so I nipped round & grabbed a replacement thinking this would be a 10 minute job, how wrong I was!
I quickly whipped out the fuel pump fuse & depressurised the fuel system. Undid the engine side connection & the petrol the dribbled out was black. When I finished swearing & cursing, I proceeded to try to remove the tank side clip.... That was seized. After about 20 minutes it finally came off. Unfortunately it actually sheared off, leaving the end of the filter tube in the clip (cue more swearing). The fuel that came out of the filter was worse than black, it could only be described as sludge.
After (a lot) more swearing I gave up on trying to get the tube out of the clip & just clamped the hose directly on to the new filter (temporary fix till I can get to the stealers tomorrow), checked for leaks & went for a quick run. The difference was instantly apparent. Still not perfect, but with the amount of crap that was clearly getting through the filter it's not surprising. I think she's going to be running with redex in for the next couple of refills.
-
As I was passing a stealers earlier, I called in to get a new coupling for the fuel filter. Surprise, surprise; you can't get it as a spare & have to buy the full pipe  So I'm gonna call in at a scrapers!
However I did order a mk6 cable tidy, a polo stubby aerial & the fog light repair wire....
-
My bad luck is getting worse, my cat has collapsed internally

I'm sure this will seem familiar to many of you...

Many thanks to my "willing" assistant!

I swear this car is sulking with me! No sooner do I sort one issue than another rears up
It decided it didn't want to run properly this morning, so I get the code reader on it....
Comes up with Multiple cylinder misfire, specifically a misfire on cylinder 3 & 4. So I figure lets swap the coils around & see if the fault changes. Low & behold it moves with the packs.
Aaaaarrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhh!!!!
So now I've ordered a set of 2.0T coil packs (http://www.awesomegti.com/car/vw/golfmk4/red-ignition-coil-pack-set-2-0tfsi) from Awesome.
Maybe this is revenge for not doing much modding over the last 2 years!

Fitted the 2.0T coils earlier. (I don't know why the pic is upside down!)

Also stuck the stubby aerial on.

Plan to do the N249 delete & got a TIP to get on this weekend
-
N249 delete done.... Ish!
Removed the plate & started to disconnect all the original hoses. Then disaster struck: One of the connections on the N112 snapped in the old hose.

This is the bit that came off:

A little bit of work with a dremal, a WD40 straw & some superglue lead to a temporary fix:
Whilst the glue set, I replaced the FPR & DV tubes:

So now i need a new N112, but its running fine in the interim.
Here's all the old tat that I removed:

I also altered & fitted my MK6 cable tidy (which really tidies up the bay IMO):

i love how many people doing the cable tidy now  fresh

Can't blame everyone, It makes it look so much cleaner!

Fitted the TIP this afternoon. A lot of people have said its a nightmare to change, but we got it done in about 40 minutes (including a coffee break!)
Got the car up on the ramps & got everything disconnected:
Undid the bolt on the turbo & with a bit of wiggling out it popped. There's quite a bit of difference between the stock & silicone TIPs:

8A99-4798-9C62-739CAE297664-228-00000087D9977A60_zpsd6e2526e.jpg)
I pushed the new part in from the top whilst my mate guided it into place from underneath. Took a little persuasion to line up the turbo connection, but a bit more wiggling & a quick tighten of the jubilee clip & the difficult bit was done. So we stopped for a brew!
New jubilee clips were fitted on the DV, hockey puck, N75 & the breather hose:

Got the MAF back in & went for a test drive:

Initial impression is good, the throttle response seems better & the turbo seems to be spooling faster. I would definitely recommend this mod!
