Title: maturity?
Post by: sam_16v on 21 June 2007, 20:06
Id really like to get involved with trackdays, but i really cant afford it on an apprentices wage and i need the car every day and cant afford another.  But im slowly starting to prep the car, braided lines, brakes, suspension, and 2.0 lump coming soon.

I entered my car in the sprint at inters, and did really crap. 10 seconds to 60 for a valver? (proven 140bhp) and really messed up one of the starts.

I was just wondering how old all you die hard track day enthusiasts are? am i aiming to high too soon?

Its not so much about the age, more about  the experience. You can't put a price on it. If you do as much as you can afford and as much as you enjoy, you will soon see your times come tumbling down.

Likes been said its nothing to do with age or for that matter car

i did my first at 19 in a 1.3 mini , had the time of my life , never looked back since

ive not done one in about 18 months and im really gettin withdrawl simptoms

Be warned tho , the addiction might have you driving round in the middle of winter , with a car with no heater , plastic windows , and not a hint of interior

i have a track orientated mk 2. nothing too extreme standard engine, koni adjustables, maxsport semi slicks, stripped interior etc. its a budget racer and road legal and is owned between 3 of us. yes we do want quicker lap times but we have so much fun as the car is we'd be quite happy if it newer went any faster. its all about the grin!  out ethos is we stick with standard until it brakes, then upgrade. the car owes us 300 quid. we have had a hell of a lot more than 300 quids worth of fun out of it!

lewis, that seem like a good ethos! gonna get my self to a track, might start with an airfield on, if i bin it i might still have a car that way!

O ive driven a 911 turbo, jag e type, Ferrari, e type and a mini cooper round a track so i guess i do actually have a bit of experience.

id say thats more than a bit of experience!  my first track outing was at cadwell in a vito van!!  the local mercedes dealership put on a bit of a do their for the launch of the new sprinter. i took a vito round for 3 laps but they didnt let you go over 70.

later in the day i had a ride in a vito 123 (petrol v6 from one of the ml cars - propper fast van) with a pro driver behind the wheel and no speed limit. now that was fun. where he found the grip from i have no idea!

Definately a frustrated racing driver! Get it on the track you'll see the grin on your face through your crash hat!

A caged and stripped XR2i , really baffled rush hour traffic , specially with a helmeted up driver

Well after a trip to Oulton on sunday to watch the touring cars , and the Clio cup being the best race of the day , im currently shopping for a tidy-ish MK2 gti , ill probably be ready for the start of next season , track days are one thing , but im sure nothing will compair to racing 10-20 other driver into the first corner

wearin a helemet in traffic eh? sounds like you're well in to this game! i sell my valver when i get the mk1, got proven 140 bhp, but body work is crap.  Think im gonna get the mk1 cant get in contact with the seller, and its 300 miles away.  What would you all think is a realistic inaurance quote for a 19 year old, with 2 years ncb?

When i think of this car it makes me happy, though i think i wont b happy in winter wehn the windows r steaming up, its frezzing cold and theres no stereo - but i dont care - bollocks to show cars!
